Building Collective Efficacy to Support Public Health Workforce Development.

CONTEXT: Leaders in public health have made great advances in workforce development over the past 30 years, while shifting from an emphasis based in training on individual, technical skills to a more holistic development approach, which boosts crosscutting skills. Efforts to increase public health workforce capabilities remain focused on workers as individuals, rather than the workforce as a collective unit. PROGRAM: Research has shown that a strategic adult learning approach can improve both individual capabilities and the collective performance of the workforce, which can be explained using

Longitudinal patterns of heterogeneous neighborhood collective efficacy and child maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood collective efficacy (NCE) has been identified as a protective factor against child maltreatment (CM), but prior research has employed variable-centered approaches assuming homogeneity and typically used cross-sectional designs. OBJECTIVE: This study examined heterogeneous patterns of NCE and their longitudinal associations with CM using person-centered approaches. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data came from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 2654), utilizing four waves from birth through age 15 across 20 large U.S. cities. METHODS: Latent profile ana

Compulsive immobility: Understanding the role of health on collective efficacy.

Most health care approaches to understanding social ills are rooted in strain or ecological models. Strain models assume that the impact of poor physical health operates through the individual, that it is the individual suffering from poor health who engages in social ills as a means of adapting, and that the impact of poor health is rather direct and immediate. Meanwhile, ecological approaches of health acknowledge how poor health may impact others and the collective, but poorly account for the case in which this is not so, leaving unexplained the many instances of people who are in poor heal

Social support, collective efficacy, and child physical abuse: does parent gender matter?

Social support and collective efficacy are related to child physical abuse. However, little is known about whether these relationships differ by gender, although mothers and fathers differ in the quantity and quality of time spent with children. This study examined whether the relationship between social support, collective efficacy, and physical abuse is stronger for mothers than fathers. Telephone interviews were conducted with parent respondents in 50 California cities (N = 3,023). Data were analyzed via overdispersed multi-level Poisson models. Results suggest that high levels of emotional

A Collective Efficacy Intervention to Promote Community Resiliency: Protocol for a Quasi-Experimental Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Community and youth violence are pervasive and have devastating health, economic, and social consequences. Violence too often impacts people of color and the life trajectories of youth in the United States, especially among people living in urban settings. OBJECTIVE: In response, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel Community Resiliency Collective Efficacy Intervention (CRCEI), which seeks to increase individual and neighborhood levels of collective efficacy, and reduce youth and community violence. The CRCEI has three phases: (1) community organizing and mobil

Collective efficacy: A protective factor for sexual minority men during the U.S. mpox outbreak.

OBJECTIVES: Collective efficacy is an understudied potential protective factor for health behavior change. This study extends previous research on HIV and COVID-19 infection to test associations with mpox vaccination and symptoms of depression and anxiety among sexual minority men during the mpox outbreak. METHOD: Between July 28, 2022 and September 22, 2022, adult cisgender sexual minority men (n = 2,614) were recruited from social networking applications and completed a cross-sectional online survey that assessed collective efficacy (united action), mpox vaccination, and symptoms of anxiety

Examining the Relationships Among Parental Overprotection, Military Life Adjustment, Social Anxiety, and Collective Efficacy.

The purpose of this study was to verify the relationships among parental overprotection (PO), military life adjustment (MLA), social anxiety, and collective efficacy (CE). There have been studies examining the influence of each of these variables in isolation, but no study has examined these variables simultaneously. Two hundred and thirty-one male conscript soldiers participated in the study. Results indicated that all four variables were correlated with one another. Through hierarchical regression analysis, we determined that social anxiety fully mediated the relationship between PO and MLA.

Neighborhood collective efficacy, parental spanking, and subsequent risk of household child protective services involvement.

Children exposed to negative neighborhood conditions and parental spanking are at higher risk of experiencing maltreatment. We conducted prospective analyses of secondary data to determine the effects of neighborhood collective efficacy and parental spanking on household Child Protective Services (CPS) involvement, and whether spanking mediates the relationship between neighborhood collective efficacy and CPS involvement. The sample (N = 2,267) was drawn from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS), a stratified random sample of 4,789 births between 1998-2000 in 20 large U.S. ci

Perceived Collective Efficacy and Parenting Competence: The Roles of Quality of Life and Hope.

Parents' perceptions of their parenting competence predict successful implementation of parenting tasks and contribute to their interest and involvement in parenting and to their children's development. Thus, identifying factors that contribute to parents' perceptions of parenting competence can help inform efforts to promote children's safety and well-being. The present study employs social disorganization theory to examine the relationship between collective efficacy and parents' sense of competence, measured along two dimensions: parental efficacy and parental satisfaction. It examines the

Efficacy of pentastarch in granulocyte collection by centrifugal leukapheresis.

The efficacy of 6% hydroxyethyl starch (hetastarch, HS) in enhancing granulocyte harvest by centrifugal leukapheresis has been described by a simple equation which predicts the granulocyte collection efficiency (GCE) based on an intrinsic donor variable, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR): GCE(%) = 1.3 ESR (mm/hr) + 45. Ten percent low molecular weight hydroxyethyl starch (pentastarch, PS) has been reported to be as effective as HS with potentially fewer adverse donor reactions (ADR). The derivation of an analogous equation for PS under conditions previously reported for HS may quantify

[The clinico-epidemiological efficacy of thymogen in acute respiratory viral infections in a military collective].

This study gathers the results of epidemiological examination in training military unit, making evaluation of prophylactic efficiency of timogen, i.e. synthetic peptide of thymus for flu and other acute respiratory infections (ARI). The high clinico-epidemiological efficiency of timogen was proved in intranasal and subcutaneous administration that had led to a considerable reduction of morbidity rate, gravity and duration of ARI. Experimental substantiation for timogen administration was obtained that proved its efficiency for flu and other ARI prophylaxis in military units.

Efficacy of granulocyte transfusions collected from nonstimulated donors.

Series of leukocyte transfusions were given to adult patients with previously untreated acute non-lymphocytic leukemia during the granulocytopenic phase of remission induction therapy with doxorubicin and cytosine arabinoside. Peripheral blood leukocytes for transfusion were obtained by continuous flow centrifugation from unstimulated normal persons. Forty-five consecutive patients were eligible to receive leukocyte transfusions depending upon the availability of the blood cell separator for leukapheresis of donors and, to a lesser extent, clinical need. A series of leukocyte transfusions was

The Protective Role of Collective Efficacy Against Illicit Drug Availability at the Street Level: A Longitudinal Analysis.

Illicit drug use remains a persistent public health concern in the USA. A growing body of research demonstrates that access to illicit drugs plays a central role in shaping patterns of drug use. Although prior studies have identified the importance of opportunity structures and broader neighborhood structural conditions in explaining variation in drug activity across places, less attention has been paid to the role of informal social control in reducing illicit drug availability, particularly at the microgeographic level. Drawing on the concept of collective efficacy, defined as shared trust a

Collective Efficacy: Development and Validation of a Measurement Scale for Use in Public Health and Development Programmes.

Impact evaluations of water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions have demonstrated lower than expected health gains, in some cases due to low uptake and sustained adoption of interventions at a community level. These findings represent common challenges for public health and development programmes relying on collective action. One possible explanation may be low collective efficacy (CE)-perceptions regarding a group's ability to execute actions related to a common goal. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a metric to assess factors related to CE. We conducted this research

Collective efficacy, group potency, and group performance: meta-analyses of their relationships, and test of a mediation model.

The authors examined relationships among collective efficacy, group potency, and group performance. Meta-analytic results (based on 6,128 groups, 31,019 individuals, 118 correlations adjusted for dependence, and 96 studies) reveal that collective efficacy was significantly related to group performance (.35). In the proposed nested 2-level model, collective efficacy assessment (aggregation and group discussion) was tested as the 1st-level moderator. It showed significantly different average correlations with group performance (.32 vs. .45), but the group discussion assessment was homogeneous, w
