BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: College years are a time young adults examine high-risk sexual behaviors, increasing their risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Fraternity/sorority membership has been identified as one factor contributing to increased risky sexual behavior in college students. This study measured the effectiveness of an educational intervention targeting STD prevention in fraternity and sorority members, and examined relationships between STD knowledge, attitudes, and demographics.
METHODS: A descriptive, correlational design was used. Pre- and posttest data were collected f

Simultaneous alcohol and cannabis (i.e. marijuana; [SAM]) use is prevalent among college students and is linked to greater negative consequences than using alcohol or cannabis alone or using both substances concurrently. While certain sociodemographic factors are associated with alcohol and cannabis use individually, little is known about which sociodemographic factors are associated with SAM use specifically. The present study examined several sociodemographic variables potentially associated with SAM use in a large, ethnically/racially diverse multi-site sample of college students (n = 3655,

A random sample of more than 15,000 undergraduate students from 130 4-year colleges answered a mailed questionnaire concerning firearm possession. Approximately 3.5% of the sampled students reported they had a working firearm at college. Students with guns were more likely to be male, White, or Native American; to binge drink and need to start the day with alcohol; to be members of a fraternity or sorority; to live off campus; and to live with a spouse or significant other. Having a gun was positively associated with driving after binge drinking, being arrested for driving under the influence

Objective: To develop and validate the Hazing Program Assessment (HPA), a brief instrument designed to assess hazing knowledge, confidence, and beliefs among college students participating in hazing prevention programs. Participants: Participants included 1,697 college students across two pilot studies at six institutions representing fraternity and sorority organizations, club sports, leadership programs, and other hazing prevention contexts. Methods: Instrument development occurred through two phases of testing involving expert review, pilot testing, and iterative refinement. Exploratory fac

Driving after drinking (DAD) is a serious public health concern found to be more common among college students than those of other age groups or same-aged non-college peers. The current study examined potential predictors of DAD among a dual-site sample of 3753 (65% female, 58% Caucasian) college students. Results showed that 19.1% of respondents had driven after 3 or more drinks and 8.6% had driven after 5 or more drinks in the past 3 months. A logistic regression model showed that male status, fraternity or sorority affiliation, family history of alcohol abuse, medium or heavy drinking (as c

UNLABELLED: : First-year college students are at particular risk for experiencing negative alcohol-related consequences that may set the stage for experiencing such consequences in later life. Latent class analysis is a person-centered approach that, based on observable indicator variables, divides a population into mutually exclusive and exhaustive groups ('classes'). To date, no studies have examined the latent class structure of negative alcohol-related consequences experienced by first-year college students just before entering college.
AIMS: The aims of this study were to (a) identify cl

Objective: Examine predictors of alcohol misuse among university students amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants: University students who completed the National College Health Assessment III before, during, and after the pandemic lockdown. Methods: Using multivariable logistic regression, we examined associations between psychological functioning, time spent with family and friends, and problematic alcohol use. Results: Alcohol use decreased, and psychological functioning was poorest one year after COVID-19-related university closures. While indicators of psychological functioning started to

Objective: College students have high rates of loneliness, which impacts their quality of life and academic success. Alongside loneliness, heavy alcohol and cannabis use are common in college students, with harmful mental and physical health consequences. Loneliness and substance use are linked in studies of adults, but there are few studies of links between loneliness and substance use in college students. This study aimed to analyze links between alcohol or cannabis use and loneliness in college students, with a subfocus on differences by Greek status (i.e., social fraternity or sorority mem

Objective: There is a high prevalence of prescription stimulant misuse (PSM) among college students in the United States (US). Preventing and identifying PSM requires an understanding of risk factors and correlates, but large-scale surveys regarding this issue have been lacking. We present the largest multi-institution study to date on the correlates of PSM among US college students. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of the 2017 American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA), an annual national survey on the demographics, health, and academic experi

BACKGROUND: Hispanic/Latino American college students report elevated rates of alcohol use and negative alcohol-related consequences compared to non-Hispanic/Latino white students. As cultural experiences and coping motives (i.e., drinking to manage negative emotions) can influence alcohol outcomes in Hispanic/Latino Americans, the current study examined how the interplay of acculturative stress and coping motives are related to alcohol use and negative alcohol-related consequences among Hispanic/Latino American college students.
METHOD: A large, multisite sample of Hispanic/Latino American c

UNLABELLED: Human trafficking is a priority concern in the U.S, but few research studies have investigated the nature and extent of its occurrence on U.S. college campuses nor strategies to stop it. The objective of this research was to identify its occurrence (force/coercion/fraud into sex exchanges for something of monetary or other value) among college students in San Diego County and Imperial Valley, California, where some of the highest documented rates of human trafficking occur nationally, and its implications for policy.
METHODS: College students (n = 971) from 12 campuses in Southern

BACKGROUND: Dark-skinned individuals are less likely than light-skinned individuals to become sunburned or develop skin cancer. Some have extrapolated this relationship and surmised that developing and maintaining a tan will reduce the risk of sunburns and melanoma. In order to examine whether this strategy indeed protects against sunburns, we surveyed college students about both their tanning habits prior to spring break and their spring break activities.
METHODS: Sorority and fraternity students were recruited after spring break. Analyses examined associations between potential risk factors

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In light of the rapidly changing legal status of marijuana in the U.S., there has been increased interest in the potentially adverse outcomes of heavy marijuana use among young persons. The goal of this study was to investigate frequent marijuana use among undergraduates, and its association with the use of illicit substances, mental health problems, and stress.
METHODS: Undergraduates from one university in the Northeast were surveyed using a questionnaire derived from the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment (N = 1,776). Logistic

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related blackouts are a common consequence of heavy drinking, and these blackouts pose risk for injury and other adverse health outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence and correlates of blackouts among underage drinkers.
METHODS: Youth (ages 14-20) presenting to a suburban Emergency Department (ED) completed screening surveys. Among those reporting past-year alcohol consumption, we examined past 3-month blackouts in relation to: background characteristics (e.g., demographics, fraternity/sorority involvement), substance use, sexual risk behaviors and incapacitated s

OBJECTIVES: Multiracial (alternatively, mixed-race or biracial) college students report higher rates of alcohol/substance use than their monoracial peers, yet factors associated with this disparity remain understudied. Guided by minority stress and tension-reduction frameworks, associations of general and Multiracial discrimination experiences with psychological distress and substance use were investigated.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data obtained from a convenience sample of 193 Multiracial college students (Mage=20.34 [SD = 1.32], 30% Male, 31% fraternity/sorority affiliation) were used. Mult

Sexual assault on college campuses is a public health issue. However varying research methodologies (e.g., different sexual assault definitions, measures, assessment timeframes) and low response rates hamper efforts to define the scope of the problem. To illuminate the complexity of campus sexual assault, we collected survey data from a large population-based random sample of undergraduate students from Columbia University and Barnard College in New York City, using evidence based methods to maximize response rates and sample representativeness, and behaviorally specific measures of sexual ass

"Andrea," an 18-year-old college freshman, walked into her first fraternity party with a few of her sorority sisters. As she walked through the crowded house, one of the fraternity boys handed the girls large plastic cups. Another boy circulated through the crowd, filling up the cups of all guests from two pitchers of beer. When he filled Andrea's cup, he smiled and was polite and charming. She thought his act of filling her cup was kind and gentlemanly, and was flattered by his attention. She didn't notice he used a different pitcher for her than he had for her friends. She and her friends co

BACKGROUND: While it is well known that substance use and gambling overlap, the degree to which this overlap can be explained by shared risk factors has not been fully explored. This study aimed to identify common and unique risk factors for gambling and substance use among young adults.
METHODS: Young adults (n=1,019) in a longitudinal study since college entry were interviewed annually. Past-year frequency of seven gambling activities was assessed once (Year 5). Structural equation models evaluated suspected risk factors in two models, one for gambling with substance use as an intermediary
