First record of Mesopithecus (Cercopithecidae, Colobinae) from the Miocene of the Iberian Peninsula.

We report dental remains of the extinct colobine monkey Mesopithecus from the Turolian (MN13, Late Miocene, ca. 6.23 Ma) locality of Venta del Moro (Valencia, Spain). They include most of the deciduous dentition and the unerupted germs of the first molars of a single infantile individual, as well as two lower left lateral incisors from two additional individuals. On the basis of morphometric comparisons, mainly based on the M1s, these remains are attributed to the Late Miocene species Mesopithecus pentelicus. They represent a significant addition to the knowledge of the deciduous dentition of

Presence of the maxillary sinus in fossil Colobinae (Cercopithecoides williamsi) from South Africa.

Extant cercopithecoid monkeys, except macaques, are distinguished among primates by their lack of paranasal pneumatization, including the maxillary sinus (MS). Analysis of this structure, widespread among Eutheria, suggests that its loss occurred in the cercopithecoid common ancestor; thus, the presence of the MS in macaques is not strictly homologous to that in other primates. CT analysis of the fossil species Victoriapithecus macinnesi supports this view, demonstrating the lack of the MS in this stem cercopithecoid. Recent evidence, however, has documented the presence of the MS in extinct c

Morphology of Enterobius (Colobenterobius) colobis Vuylstéke, 1964 (Nematoda: Oxyuridae: Enterobiinae) collected from an ashy red colobus, Procolobus rufomitratus tephrosceles (Elliot, 1907) (Primates: Cercopithecidae: Colobinae), in Uganda.

Enterobius (Colobenterobius) colobis Vuylstéke, 1964 (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) is redescribed based on males and females collected from an ashy red colobus, Procolobus rufomitratus tephrosceles (Elliot, 1907) (Primates: Cercopithecidae: Colobinae), in Uganda. Two morphotypes are recognized among females, which are readily distinguished by tail length, termination level of lateral alae, and egg size. The relative position of cellular wall greatly varied in the ovijector, indicating its limited systematic value. The males possess a much shorter spicule than those in previous descriptions, suggesting

Data on First Record of Brown Morph Banded Langur (Presbytis femoralis), Leucistic Dusky Leaf Monkey (Trachypithecus obscurus) in Malaysia and Review of Morph Diversity in Langur (Colobinae).

Morphism refer to polymorphic species, in which multiple colour variants coexist within a population. Morphism in primates is common and langurs also exhibit certain characteristics of morphism, such as conspicuous natal coats. Banded langurs (Presbytis femoralis) and dusky leaf monkey (Trachypithecus obscurus) exhibits the same characteristics of conspicuous natal coats, but these coats are only limited to infants and changed when they reached adulthood. This article reports the first discovery of rare brown morph of two adult male banded langurs and one leucistic adult female dusky leaf monk

Isolation and characterization of adenoviruses infecting endangered golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana).

BACKGROUND: Adenoviruses are important pathogens with the potential for interspecies transmission between humans and non-human primates. Although many adenoviruses have been identified in monkeys, the knowledge of these viruses from the Colobinae members is quite limited. FINDINGS: We conducted a surveillance of viral infection in endangered golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) in the subfamily Colobinae in China, and found that 5.1% of sampled individuals were positive for adenovirus. One of the adenoviruses (SAdV-WIV19) was successfully isolated and its full-length genome was

Morphometric Study on the Mandible of Colobine Fossil (Mesopithecus pentelicus) Found in East Asia, a Comparison With Extant Taxa.

A tooth-bearing mandible fossil of a colobine monkey discovered at Shuitangba, Zhaotong, Yunnan, China, was morphometrically analyzed and compared with extant Asian colobines. Our previous qualitative and quantitative descriptions indicate that it can be safely attributed to Mesopithecus pentelicus, a Miocene fossil colobine widely found in Europe and South Asia. The present research aims to explore fossil association with extant colobines and functionally propose its dietary preferences based on multivariate morphometric analyses of mandibular morphology. The results indicate that this fossil

Oral processing, sexual selection, and size variation in the circumorbital region of Colobus and Piliocolobus.

OBJECTIVES: The function of the browridge in primates is a subject of enduring debate. Early studies argued for a role in resisting masticatory stresses, but recent studies have suggested sexual signaling as a biological role. We tested associations between circumorbital form, diet, oral processing, and social behavior in two species of colobus monkey-the king colobus (Colobus polykomos) and western red or bay colobus (Piliocolobus badius). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We quantified circumorbital size and dimorphism in a sample of 98 crania. Controlling for age and facial size, we tested whether va

Faecal particle size in free-ranging primates supports a 'rumination' strategy in the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus).

In mammalian herbivores, faecal particle size indicates chewing efficiency. Proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) are foregut fermenters in which regurgitation and remastication (i.e. rumination) was observed in the wild, but not with the same consistency as found in ruminants and camelids. To test whether this species has exceptional chewing efficiency among primates, as ruminants have among mammals, we compared faecal particle size in free-ranging specimens with those of 12 other primate species. The discrete mean faecal particle size (dMEAN) increased with body mass (M) as dMEAN (mm) = 0.65

No systematic difference in obesity susceptibility between two groups of zoo primates with distinct digestive physiologies: hindgut-fermenting lemurs and foregut-fermenting colobines.

Obesity is an often-stated issue in zoo animals, including primates, and has historically been particularly emphasized for lemurs. By contrast, similar reports for colobine species-which are literally called 'slim monkeys' in at least one other language-are absent. This has been hypothsized to be linked to the colobine foregut fermentation system; diets high in easily digestible carbohydrates might disturb the microbiome in the foregut, similar to acidosis in domestic ruminants, leading to reduced intake and disease rather than obesity, but empirical data is lacking. We compared body mass (BM)

Current Knowledge on Craniodental Anatomy and Dental Pathology in Golden Snub-Nosed Monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana): A Comparative Review.

The Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) is a rare and endangered species endemic to China that occupies a particularly important position in the evolutionary history of Rhinopithecus species. Oral health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being in both humans and nonhuman primates. We review the current limited literature on the dental characteristics and dental pathologies related to the golden snub-nosed monkey, based on skeleton data and morphological evidence. The results indicated that this species possesses dental characteristics that are remarkably different from

Comparing the gut microbiota of Sichuan golden monkeys across multiple captive and wild settings: roles of anthropogenic activities and host factors.

BACKGROUND: Captivity and artificial food provision are common conservation strategies for the endangered golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana). Anthropogenic activities have been reported to impact the fitness of R. roxellana by altering their gut microbiota, a crucial indicator of animal health. Nevertheless, the degree of divergence in gut microbiota between different anthropogenically-disturbed (AD) R. roxellana and their counterparts in the wild has yet to be elucidated. Here, we conducted a comparative analysis of the gut microbiota across nine populations of R. roxellana sp

TAENIA CRASSICEPS CYSTICERCOSIS IN A NILGIRI LANGUR ( SEMNOPITHECUS JOHNII).

A captive-born adult female Nilgiri langur ( Semnopithecus johnii) developed an edematous swelling of the left thigh and a firm mass around the right ankle joint. The animal also suffered from lethargy and anorexia and was euthanized because of poor general condition. Necropsy revealed that the skeletal muscle of the left thigh had been replaced by a multilocular cystic mass containing numerous sand-grain-sized whitish structures. Small cysts were also present in the lung and the myocardium. The mass of the right ankle joint was histologically consistent with a myxosarcoma. In contrast, the cy

Faecal Particle Size in Free-Ranging Proboscis Monkeys, Nasalis larvatus: Variation between Seasons.

Reducing the size of food particles is crucial for herbivores. Seasonal dietary changes are known to influence animals' chewing efficiency. Proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) are foregut fermenters, with a high chewing efficiency allowing them to achieve very fine faecal particles. In this study, we investigated how proboscis monkeys' chewing efficiency varies between wet and dry seasons, hypothesising differences possibly related to diet change. Faecal particle size analysis is an established approach to estimate chewing efficiency in mammalian herbivores. We analysed 113 proboscis monkey f

High prevalence of Enterocytozoon bieneusi zoonotic genotype D in captive golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellanae) in zoos in China.

BACKGROUND: Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the dominant specie of microsporidia which can infect both anthroponotic and zoonotic species. The golden snub-nosed monkey is an endangered primate which can also infect by E. bieneusi. To date, few genetic data on E. bieneusi from golden snub-nosed monkeys has been published. Therefore, to clarify the prevalence and genotypes of E. bieneusi in captive golden snub-nosed monkeys is necessary to assess the potential for zoonotic transmission. RESULT: We examined 160 golden snub-nosed monkeys from six zoos in four cities in China, using PCR and comparative

Skull variation in Afro-Eurasian monkeys results from both adaptive and non-adaptive evolutionary processes.

Afro-Eurasian monkeys originated in the Miocene and are the most species-rich modern primate family. Molecular and fossil data have provided considerable insight into their evolutionary divergence, but we know considerably less about the evolutionary processes that underlie these differences. Here, we apply tests developed from quantitative genetics theory to a large (n > 3000) cranio-mandibular morphometric dataset, investigating the relative importance of adaptation (natural selection) and neutral processes (genetic drift) in shaping diversity at different taxonomic levels, an approach appli

Seasonal changes in social cohesion among males in a same-sex primate group.

Male-male interactions in mixed-sex groups of social mammals are typically characterized by a mix of hostility and affiliation, as a result of inherent conflicts over mating opportunities, and the costs and benefits of social alliances, co-operative behaviors, and coalitionary defense. In species of nonhuman primates that form all-male groups, it is still unclear how the tradeoffs between the benefits of forming an all-male group and the cost of male-male competition in seeking mating opportunities with females in bisexual groups influence social cohesion in different seasons. Here, we used so

A new look at Laccopithecus robustus from the Late Miocene of China: Anatomy, systematics, and paleobiology.

Laccopithecus robustus, from the Late Miocene of Shihuiba in Yunnan Province of southwestern China, is one of the best known pliopithecoids. Dating to ∼7-6 Ma, it is the last-known surviving pliopithecoid in Eurasia. Preliminary reports of the craniodental material of Laccopithecus have been published, but no detailed accounts of the morphology are available. The current study presents a fuller description of the cranium, mandible, and dentition of Laccopithecus; provides comparisons with other pliopithecoids; and highlights the distinguishing features of the genus. Laccopithecus is a relative

Variation in placentophagy in golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) reflects nutritional constraints.

Golden snub-nosed monkeys show inconsistent frequency of placentophagy between wild and captive populations, with almost all births in the wild but around half of the births in captivity accompanied by the female's consumption of placenta. This aligns with nutritional demands-driven placentophagy, as captive populations are generally under less nutritional constraints for breeding females than the wild population. Placentophagy is probably adaptive in the wild and under positive selection due to nutritional benefits to both mothers and infants.

Molecular Characterization of Complete Simian Foamy Virus Genomes from Three Colobine Monkeys Reveals Highly Divergent Evolutionary Trajectories and Identifies Transmission to Humans.

Simian foamy viruses (SFVs) are ancient retroviruses that co-evolve with nonhuman primates (NHPs), although genomic data from Asian and African monkeys are limited. We report the characterization of three new SFV colobine genomes from two Asian species (Trachypithecus francoisi (Tfr) and Pygathrix nemaeus (Pne)) and one African monkey (Colobus guereza, Cgu), obtained via metagenomics analysis of peripheral blood leukocyte tissue culture isolates. Genomic analyses found conserved structural, enzymatic, and auxiliary genes flanked by long terminal repeats, with all major transcriptional and stru

The health threat of wild animals by Rank I ARGs from habitat soils: Metagenomic and metabolomic evidence.

Human disturbance (HD) leads to the enrichment of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), posing a threat to the health of wild animals. However, not all ARGs necessarily endanger wild animals' health. Therefore, this study used the golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) as a sentinel species, and employed metagenomics to investigate the impact of high-risk ARGs (Rank Ⅰ ARGs) from habitats on wild animals' health. Subsequently, we studied the expression of metabolites within the metabolic network harboring homologous functional genes based on metabolomics. The results indicated that o
