Historical legacies of colonialism affect the distribution and control of scientific knowledge today, including within the pathogen genomics field, which remains dominated by high-income countries (HICs). We discuss the imperatives for decolonising pathogen genomics, including the need for more equitable representation, collaboration, and capacity-strengthening, and the shared responsibilities that both low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) and HICs have in this endeavour. By highlighting examples from LMICs, we illuminate the pathways and challenges that researchers in LMICs face in

This paper examines psychoanalysts' affective and defensive responses to artificial intelligence (AI) through the lens of originary technicity, the philosophical claim that technology is constitutive of the human rather than external to it. Drawing on Freudian theory-particularly the uncanny-alongside object relations and posthumanist thought, the author argues that psychotherapy's moral panic about AI reflects a splitting of the human from the technological that mirrors colonialist Subject/Other dualisms. Prompts are explored as drive derivatives, and the dyadic engagement between user and ch

This article is about the problems of malnutrition and disease in a rural area of an underdeveloped country, Tanzania. The particular way in which health problems were conceptualized during the colonial era, the structure of the medical services established, and the effects of health care on the health status and size of the rural population of Songea District in Tanzania are shown in the article to have been determined by the economic, social, and political requirements of German and British colonial rulers rather than by the health needs of the African population. Colonial economic policy em

Limited research has been conducted to date on how disaster colonialism shapes, maintains, or destroys social organisations and relationships within indigenous societies. This study was conducted within the Hot Spring Tribal Community (HSTC) of the Rukai people, one of 16 indigenous groups in Taiwan, in the aftermath of Typhoon Morakot in 2009. Based on ethnographic research, the study reveals that the HSTC had endured more than a century of colonialism, resulting in an 'unnatural' disaster long before the storm struck the island. The impact of colonial forces intensified through a variety of

Developed in the United States in the late 1950s and 1960s, the electronic fetal monitor (EFM) was increasingly used in obstetric practice throughout North America by the 1970s. In identifying and delineating the "normal" fetal heart rate, EFM played a central role in defining obstetric risk and, in the eyes of many practitioners, quickly became an essential tool of "modern" and "safe" hospitalized birth. Focusing on one specific settler-colonial context, this article explores the relationship between obstetric technologies including the EFM and the childbirth "choices" available to mothers gi

This article offers a sociologically informed analysis of queer racial and spatial politics in Alan Hollinghurst's fiction. Through a close textual analysis of The Swimming-Pool Library, The Line of Beauty, The Folding Star and The Spell, the study reveals how queer spaces, while supposed to be inclusive, indeed reproduce colonial and orientalist exclusive discourses. Nonwhite gay men are represented as feminized, hypersexualised, and subordinate to their white British counterparts, echoing the master-slave dynamic of colonial narratives. Drawing on the works of such theorists as Mercer, Crens

BACKGROUND: Climate change is a growing threat to human health, particularly in regions facing overlapping environmental hazards and social inequities. Puerto Rico-a U.S. territory with a colonial history-offers a unique case for examining how multiple disasters, including Hurricane Maria, ongoing earthquakes, and the COVID-19 pandemic, interact with structural vulnerabilities to affect maternal and child health. Despite increasing attention to climate-related health outcomes, little is known about the reproductive health impacts of cumulative disaster exposure in colonial contexts.

Platforms have been studied in terms of their impact on knowledge production and generation of social value. Little however is known about the significance of the knowledge they transfer to the recipient communities-often in faraway countries of the Global South-or its potential perceived colonizing effects. Our study explores the question around digital epistemic colonialism in the context of health platforms involved in knowledge transfer. Using a Foucauldian lens, we study digital colonialism as a phenomenon that emerges from platforms' underpinning power/knowledge relations. Drawing upon a

This essay examines two Portuguese novels about colonialism and its legacies: António Lobo Antunes's Fado Alexandrino (1983) and Aida Gomes's Os Pretos de Pousaflores (The Blacks from Pousaflores) (2011). Fado Alexandrino perpetuates the use of Black women's raped bodies as a plot device to represent colonial violence, while Gomes's narrative empowers racialized victims of sexual abuse and challenges dominant public memories of the Colonial War. A close reading of these novels, contextualized against the background of scholarly debates about the representation of sexual violence, exposes both

Drawing on insights from critical Indigenous studies, settler colonial studies, and critical whiteness studies, the authors examine how settler colonial and white supremacist ideologies may continue to structure their own family therapy theorizing and practice, with particular attention to the concept and practice of sociocultural attunement (SCA) as applied to Socio-Emotional Relationship Therapy (SERT). SCA was developed within settler colonial structures and is increasingly promoted as a decolonial, anti-oppressive practice in family therapy. An anticolonial lens, paradoxically, makes visib

This ethnographic study examines the income-generating strategies of people who inject drugs (PWID) in Puerto Rico, focusing on how colonialism, economic dispossession, and structural violence shape daily survival. Based on fieldwork conducted between 2015 and 2023 in urban and rural settings, we document revuleo, hustling practices such as panhandling, informal labor, and low-level drug sales that PWID use to sustain their drug consumption. We highlight the resourcefulness of PWID who seize any available opportunity, legal or informal, turning crises such as Hurricane Maria and shifts in trea

In 2008, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada engaged in a public project of national reconciliation to address the ongoing impacts of settler colonialism including the disproportionate number of Indigenous adults and youth who are held in remand facilities awaiting trial or sentence as well as those who are convicted and sentenced to periods of incarceration. Efforts to further reconciliation by reducing Indigenous incarceration rates have relied largely on the courts and their application of a sentencing principle rooted in the Supreme Court's ruling in R. v. Gladue [1999] 1 SCR

Medical artificial intelligence is increasingly used in diagnostic support, risk prediction, disease surveillance, documentation, referral, and workflow management. This conceptual study examines its ethical integration into Philippine healthcare through Pope Leo XIV's Magnifica Humanitas, incarnational theology, Filipino relational ethics, postcolonial bioethics, and Catholic Social Teaching. Using integrative, concept-driven thematic analysis and theological-bioethical dialogue, the study develops three themes: the optimized body and incarnate human dignity; medical AI and technological colo

Since sera from most species contain both colony-stimulating and column-inhibitory factors, the net CSA results from a balance between these opposing substances. Studies were performed to determine whether the increased CSA noted during neutropenia or endotoxemia is due to an increase in CSF or to a decline in serum inhibitors. Rats were treated with cyclophosphamide, total body irradiation, or endotoxin and bled during the peak CSA response. By separation studies using Sephadex G150, it was shown that serum levels of high-molecular-weight inhibitors were unchanged from control values. Minimal

Group cohesion and collective decision-making are important for many social animals, like social insects, whose societies depend on the coordinated action of individuals to complete collective tasks. A useful model for understanding collective, consensus-driven decision-making is the fluid nest selection dynamics of ant colonies. Certain ant species oscillate between occupying multiple nests simultaneously (polydomy) and reuniting at a single location (monodomy), but little is known about how colonies achieve a consensus around these dynamics. To investigate the factors underpinning the splitt

The Northern Territory (N.T.) of Australia has the highest imprisonment rate per capita in the country. The vast majority of prisoners (86%) are Indigenous Australian despite only 30% of the N.T. population identifying as Indigenous. This paper investigates factors influencing this over-representation. The most common reason for imprisonment concerns violence. Alcohol is consumed in high quantities, particularly in Central Australia and is thought to affect incarceration rates. Recent strategies to control alcohol abuse in the N.T. have been ineffective in comparison with other states of Austr

In the PHA-leukocyte feeder colony assay--a fluid assay on top of an agar underlayer--colonies might not be the product of clonogenic cells but rather from aggregates, as was already shown for hairy cell leukemia (Leukemia Res. 11, 911 (1987)). To study the role of aggregation in this colony assay in other B-cell malignancies, we irradiated cells from B-chronic lymphocytic leukemia, B-non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and multiple myeloma. In nearly all cases, viable "colonies" were seen after irradiation, albeit in lower numbers. These data indicate that in the PHA-leukocyte feeder colony assay, a consi

Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is one of the most problematic complications after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). We describe a series of 48 pancreatic-head resections from our institution, in which we compare a new technique to create the pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) reconstruction with standard techniques. The goal is to achieve a lower rate of POPF. This new PJ is termed the "Colonial Wig" (CW) PJ due to the novel appearance of the jejunum wrapping around the pancreas, resembling a Colonial wig wrapping around the head of a Colonial Whig (e.g., George Washington). In our consecutive s
