Color in the dreams of the color-blind.

This paper attempts to illustrate how three color-blind patients utilized color in their dreams in such a manner as to actively deny their visual defect. These patients had displaced to the eyes some critical conflicts about other body parts. The use of color to deny color blindness thus further served to deny other physical defects, both real and imaginary. In addition, this defense helped to fend off intense affects related to these defects as well as associated castration anxieties.

Modeling color preference using color space metrics.

Studying color preferences provides a means to discover how perceptual experiences map onto cognitive and affective judgments. A challenge is finding a parsimonious way to describe and predict patterns of color preferences, which are complex with rich individual differences. One approach has been to model color preferences using factors from metric color spaces to establish direct correspondences between dimensions of color and preference. Prior work established that substantial, but not all, variance in color preferences could be captured by weights on color space dimensions using multiple li

Dual-color augmented reality waveguide display for color vision assistance using color tracking.

Color vision deficiency (CVD) impairs the discrimination of specific color pairs, particularly red and green, and curative treatments remain unavailable. Existing assistive approaches, such as tinted glasses, contact lenses, and screen-based recoloring methods, can improve color discrimination, but these approaches either modify the entire visual field globally or are constrained to fixed display environments. Here, we propose an augmented reality (AR) display that captures real-time real-world scenes, identifies regions of perceptual difficulty, and superimposes virtual content to assist user

Colors, colored overlays, and reading skills.

In this article, we are concerned with the role of colors in reading written texts. It has been argued that colored overlays applied above written texts positively influence both reading fluency and reading speed. These effects would be particularly evident for those individuals affected by the so called Meares-Irlen syndrome, i.e., who experience eyestrain and/or visual distortions - e.g., color, shape, or movement illusions - while reading. This condition would interest the 12-14% of the general population and up to the 46% of the dyslexic population. Thus, colored overlays have been largely

Chromaticity of color perception and object color knowledge.

Sensorimotor theories of semantic memory require overlap between conceptual and perceptual representations. One source of evidence for such overlap comes from neuroimaging reports of co-activation during memory retrieval and perception; for example, regions involved in color perception (i.e., regions that respond more to colored than grayscale stimuli) are activated by retrieval of object color. One unanswered question from these studies is whether distinctions that are observed during perception are likewise observed during memory retrieval. That is, are regions defined by a chromaticity effe

All the Colors of the Rainbow: Diversification of Flower Color and Intraspecific Color Variation in the Genus Iris.

Floral color plays a key role as visual signaling and is therefore of great importance in shaping plant-pollinator interactions. Iris (Iridaceae), a genus comprising over 300 species and named after the Greek goddess of the colorful rainbow, is famous for its dazzling palette of flower colors and patterns, which vary considerably both within and among species. Despite the large variation of flower color in Iris, little is known about the phylogenetic and ecological contexts of floral color. Here, we seek to resolve the evolution of flower color in the genus Iris in a macroevolutionary framewor

Computerized Full-Color Assessment for Distinguishing Color Vision Deficiency.

Background/Objectives: Current methods for diagnosing color vision deficiency (CVD) generally fall into two categories: computer-based tests that lack full-color lighting and non-computer-based tests that provide full-color lighting. Most of these approaches face several limitations, including inaccurate illumination of test samples, inconsistent test durations, learning effects, and the need for highly skilled operators. Methods: To address these limitations, this study introduces the Computerized Full-Color Assessment (CFCA) method, which employs a full-color light generation system based on

Color vision.

Color vision has been studied for centuries, but many fundamental questions remain about the nature of color perception and its neural underpinnings. Typical human color vision is trichromatic - based on three types of cone receptors - yet manifests in a wide variety of individual variations. Similarly, the processing of the cone signals depends on opponent mechanisms that compare the signals from different cone classes. However, the types of comparisons and how they ultimately relate to color appearance or different perceptual tasks are still shrouded in mystery. This review focuses on the pr

Training synesthetic letter-color associations by reading in color.

Synesthesia is a rare condition in which a stimulus from one modality automatically and consistently triggers unusual sensations in the same and/or other modalities. A relatively common and well-studied type is grapheme-color synesthesia, defined as the consistent experience of color when viewing, hearing and thinking about letters, words and numbers. We describe our method for investigating to what extent synesthetic associations between letters and colors can be learned by reading in color in nonsynesthetes. Reading in color is a special method for training associations in the sense that the

Crocodiles Alter Skin Color in Response to Environmental Color Conditions.

Many species alter skin color to varying degrees and by different mechanisms. Here, we show that some crocodylians modify skin coloration in response to changing light and environmental conditions. Within the Family, Crocodylidae, all members of the genus Crocodylus lightened substantially when transitioned from dark enclosure to white enclosures, whereas Mecistops and Osteolaemus showed little/no change. The two members of the Family Gavialidae showed an opposite response, lightening under darker conditions, while all member of the Family Alligatoridae showed no changes. Observed color change

Plaque color analysis by the conventional yellow-color grading system and quantitative measurement using LCH color space.

BACKGROUND: Yellow plaques of higher color grades are regarded as more vulnerable. We tried to elucidate the characteristics of yellow color that are regarded as the sign of vulnerable plaques by an objective and quantitative plaque color analysis. METHODS: The color of yellow plaques was quantitatively analyzed using LCH color space and was presented by the maximum values of lightness (Lmax), chroma (Cmax), and hue (Hmax). Effect of light intensity on these parameters was experimentally examined (five plaque models, six light intensities). Relation between conventional yellow-color grade and

Is color patchy?

In many natural scenes, shadows and shading, which are primarily luminance-defined features, proliferate. Hence one might expect that the chromatic variations of natural scenes, which more faithfully represent the layout of object surfaces, will contain relatively fewer and larger uniform regions than the luminance variations, i.e., will be more "patchy." This idea was tested using images of natural scenes that were decomposed into chromatic and luminance layers modeled as the responses of the red-green, blue-yellow, and luminance channels of the human visual system. Patchiness was defined as

Single-shot color phase shifting profilometry method robust against color crosstalk.

In this work, a method for retrieving the phase of a single composite color fringe pattern projected onto the surface of colorful objects is presented. Its purpose is two-fold: (a) experimentally prove that the projection of a single composite RGB fringe pattern containing small phase shifts among them, effectively reduces the errors introduced by the different responses of the RGB channels of the CCD and those due to the color crosstalk and (b) to show that we have built a two-step algorithm adequate for processing such fringe patterns. The experimental results are compared with those obtaine

Color Vision Deficits.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Color provides important information about the identity of the objects we encounter. After early processing stages in the retinal cones, thalamus, and occipital cortex, retinal signals reach the ventral temporal cortex for high-level color and object processing, which links color perception with top-down expectations and knowledge. In the language-dominant hemisphere, some of these regions communicate with the language systems; by assigning verbal labels to percepts, these circuits speed up stimulus categorization, and permit fast and accurate inter-individual communication.
