Characterization of the venom apparatus of Oxyrhopus guibei (Squamata: Colubridae).

Oxyrhopus guibei is a conspicuous colubrid snake popular in the exotic pet trade that has been implicated in envenomation cases involving local and systemic clinical manifestations. This study aims to characterize the venom apparatus of O. guibei, including the composition and immunochemical reactivity of its secretion. The maxilla and fangs were examined using scanning electron microscopy, while the histology and histochemistry of the glands were analyzed via hematoxylin-eosin and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), Alcian Blue pH 2.5, and Gomori's trichrome staining. Additionally, the protein profil

Evolution of Three-Finger Toxin Genes in Neotropical Colubrine Snakes (Colubridae).

Snake venom research has historically focused on front-fanged species (Viperidae and Elapidae), limiting our knowledge of venom evolution in rear-fanged snakes across their ecologically diverse phylogeny. Three-finger toxins (3FTxs) are a known neurotoxic component in the venoms of some rear-fanged snakes (Colubridae: Colubrinae), but it is unclear how prevalent 3FTxs are both in expression within venom glands and more broadly among colubrine species. Here, we used a transcriptomic approach to characterize the venom expression profiles of four species of colubrine snakes from the Neotropics th

A new species of Lycodon Boie, 1826 (Serpentes, Colubridae) from northern Vietnam.

A new species of the genus Lycodon is described from Cao Bang Province, Vietnam, based on three individuals with distinct differences in morphology and molecular data. The new species is differentiated from its congeners by a combination of the following characters: dorsal scales in 17-17-15 rows, smooth throughout; supralabials usually eight (rarely nine); infralabials ten; one elongated loreal on each side, in contact with the eye; precloacal plate single; ventral scales 212-218 (plus one or two preventral scales); subcaudals 90 or 91; maxillary teeth 13 or 14; dorsal surface of body with 28

Preliminary Biochemical and Venomic Characterization of the Venom of Phalotris lemniscatus (Serpentes, Colubridae).

BACKGROUND: For many decades, research on snake venom toxinology focused mainly on the venoms of Viperidae and Elapidae species, which were traditionally the only ones considered as venomous. However, much less interest has been given to the venom produced by opisthoglyphous colubrid snakes, since they were typically considered of no clinical relevance. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work is to perform a preliminary biochemical and venomic characterization of the venom of the colubrid snake Phalotris lemniscatus, a species that has been responsible for two relevant cases of envenomation in Urugua

The functional meaning of "prey size" in water snakes (Nerodia fasciata, Colubridae).

The evolutionary success of macrostomatan (enlarged-gape) snakes has been attributed to their ability to consume large prey, in turn made possible by their highly kinetic skulls. However, prey can be "large" in several ways, and we have little insight into which aspects of prey size and shape affect skull function during feeding. We used X-ray videos of broad-banded water snakes (Nerodia fasciata) feeding on both frogs and fish to quantify movements of the jaw elements during prey transport, and of the anterior vertebral column during post-cranial swallowing. In a sample of additional individu

Three-Finger Toxin Diversification in the Venoms of Cat-Eye Snakes (Colubridae: Boiga).

The Asian genus Boiga (Colubridae) is among the better studied non-front-fanged snake lineages, because their bites have minor, but noticeable, effects on humans. Furthermore, B. irregularis has gained worldwide notoriety for successfully invading Guam and other nearby islands with drastic impacts on the local bird populations. One of the factors thought to allow B. irregularis to become such a noxious pest is irditoxin, a dimeric neurotoxin composed of two three-finger toxins (3FTx) joined by a covalent bond between two newly evolved cysteines. Irditoxin is highly toxic to diapsid (birds and

[Notes on bites of the snake Alsophis cantherigerus Bibron (Reptilia-Serpentes colubridae) in Cuba].

The two single cases of persons who were bitten by the abundant and current species of Cuban snake which is commonly known as "jubo" (Alsophis cantherigerus) and the bothersome lesions as a result of the enzymatic content of its saliva are reported. Likewise there are in the Antilles region other species of that genus which also cause such lesions since they also have the same characteristic. Bibliography on these ophidia and their main toxicology are pointed out.

First report of parasitism by Hexametra boddaertii (Nematoda: Ascaridae) in Oxyrhopus guibei (Serpentes: Colubridae).

The current study summarizes the postmortem examination of a specimen of Oxyrhopus guibei (Serpentes, Colubridae) collected in Iguazu National Park (Argentina), and found deceased a week following arrival to the serpentarium of the National Institute of Tropical Medicine (Argentina). Although the snake appeared to be in good health, a necropsy performed following its death identified the presence of a large number of roundworms in the coelomic cavity, with indications of peritonitis and serosal adherence. Additional observations from the necropsy revealed small calcifications in the mesotheliu

Discovering high species diversity of Ophiotaenia tapeworms (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) of watersnakes (Colubridae) in North America.

Tapeworms of the genus Ophiotaenia La Rue, 1911 parasitize herptiles (= amphibians and 'reptiles') throughout the world, with about 100 species recognised as valid. In the present work, the North American species found in watersnakes (Colubridae) are reviewed. An examination of the holotype of Ophiotaenia perspicua La Rue, 1911, the type species of the genus, and other specimens from Nerodia rhombifer (Hallowell) revealed that two species were used for the species description. The 'true' O. perspicua has a small scolex and small, round suckers. This species is redescribed based on new material

Human envenomation from the bite of the eastern garter snake, Thamnophis s. sirtalis (Serpentes: Colubridae).

A 13-yr-old victim of a prolonged eastern garter snake (Thamnophis s. sirtalis) bite was hospitalized following development of coolness, edema and ecchymosis of the bitten hand. Although lymphatic involvement was noted, vital signs and laboratory tests were normal and rapid recovery followed. Subsequent asymptomatic Thamnophis bites of the subject indicate that these clinical changes were not allergic. This case from Delaware suggests that widespread toxicity within the genus is likely.

Decreased food intake as a fecundity-dependent cost of reproduction in keelback snakes (Tropidonophis mairii, Colubridae).

The physical burden of pregnancy may render females slower and less able to evade predation, favouring a reduction in feeding in order to avoid a reduction in survivorship. Life-history theory predicts that an organism's optimal level of investment into reproduction depends upon whether or not the associated 'costs' (such as a decrease in rate of feeding) increase with higher fecundity. Anorexia during pregnancy is widespread among snakes, but there are few field data on fecundity-dependence of such costs. Over a 23-year period, we recorded reproductive condition and feeding status (based on p

Divergent Specialization of Simple Venom Gene Profiles among Rear-Fanged Snake Genera (Helicops and Leptodeira, Dipsadinae, Colubridae).

Many venomous animals express toxins that show extraordinary levels of variation both within and among species. In snakes, most studies of venom variation focus on front-fanged species in the families Viperidae and Elapidae, even though rear-fanged snakes in other families vary along the same ecological axes important to venom evolution. Here we characterized venom gland transcriptomes from 19 snakes across two dipsadine rear-fanged genera (Leptodeira and Helicops, Colubridae) and two front-fanged genera (Bothrops, Viperidae; Micrurus, Elapidae). We compared patterns of composition, variation,

Color polymorphism, taxonomic confusion and cryptic diversity in the kukri snake Oligodon albocinctus (Cantor, 1839) (Squamata: Colubridae).

The kukri snake Oligodon albocinctus (Cantor, 1839) is a widespread element of the Indo-Himalayan and Indo-Burmese snake fauna with two distinct color patterns. The first and more typical morphotype has light bands with black edges, while individuals of the second morphotype have brown blotches or narrow crossbars. The polychromatic nature of this species has led to considerable taxonomic confusion between O. albocinctus and members of Oligodon occurring in sympatry or parapatry. In this study, we investigate patterns of genetic and morphological variation in O. albocinctus and explore whether

Three new species of Ophiotaenia La Rue, 1911 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) from dipsadine snakes (Squamata: Colubridae) in Ecuador.

The parasite fauna of Neotropical reptiles is poorly known, and the number of parasites described in these hosts does not seem to correspond to the actual species diversity in this zoogeographical region. This also applies to tapeworms such as proteocephalids, which are rarely found in reptiles and are strictly specific to their reptilian hosts. In the present paper, three new species of Ophiotaenia La Rue, 1911 are described from three dipsadine snake species (Squamata: Colubridae) in Ecuador, namely O. jeanmarctouzeti sp. n. from the Neotropical blunt-headed treesnake Imantodes cenchoa (Linn
