Fungal diseases of columbiformes and anseriformes.

Because of the high incidence of aspergillosis, fungal disease is an important condition in the waterfowl. Although this is generally a disease of individual birds, epizootics have been reported when overwhelming spore loads are present. By contrast, the occurrence of fungal disease is quite sporadic in the pigeon. In both groups of birds, however, the zoonotic potential of fungal diseases such as cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis, and blastomycosis is clinically significant. The abundant creatinine levels in droppings serve as a nitrogen source for these organisms. This allows their numbers to i

Soft Tissue Surgery of Raptors and Columbiformes.

Soft tissue surgery in raptors and Columbiformes is shaped by distinctive avian anatomy-thin, friable skin with extensive skeletal attachments, diffuse cutaneous vasculature, and a 3 stage wound healing process-and by species-specific injury patterns. This article reviews preoperative triage, anesthetic considerations, and wound classification by etiology and contamination grade, and details key reconstructive and specialized procedures including ingluviotomy, cervical advancement flaps, propatagial ligament repair, tendon repair, imping, and management of pododermatitis. Trichomonas gallinae in columbiform birds from the Galapagos Islands.

Domestic pigeons were introduced into the Galapagos Islands in 1972 or 1973. There is a high prevalence of Trichomonas gallinae among them and some evidence of canker. Trichomonas gallinae can be found also in endemic Galapagos doves in the vicinity of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island. Doves examined on pigeon-free islands were not found infected.

Evidence for strain-specific virulence of Trichomonas gallinae in African columbiformes.

Infection by parasites or pathogens can have marked physiological impacts on individuals. In birds, infection may affect moult and feather growth, which is an energetically demanding time in the annual cycle. Previous work has suggested a potential link between clinically visible Trichomonas gallinae infection and wing length in turtle doves Streptopelia turtur arriving on breeding grounds. First, T. gallinae infection was characterized in 149 columbids from 5 species, sampled on turtle dove wintering grounds in Senegal during the moulting period, testing whether infection by T. gallinae is li

Zoonotic diseases of common pet birds: psittacine, passerine, and columbiform species.

Zoonotic transmission of disease from pet birds is uncommon, but there are some recognized dangers. Most notably, Chlamydophila psittaci can be transmitted from pet birds to humans. Allergic responses to pet birds, including pneumonitis and contact dermatitis, have also been documented. Bite wounds from pet birds are rarely reported but can cause trauma and develop infection. The other diseases discussed here are considered potential zoonotic diseases of pet birds because of either isolated reports of suspected but unconfirmed transmission to humans or from reports of wild conspecifics being r

Detection of the European epidemic strain of Trichomonas gallinae in finches, but not other non-columbiformes, in the absence of macroscopic disease.

Finch trichomonosis is an emerging infectious disease affecting European passerines caused by a clonal strain of Trichomonas gallinae. Migrating chaffinches (Fringilla coelebs) were proposed as the likely vector of parasite spread from Great Britain to Fennoscandia. To test for such parasite carriage, we screened samples of oesophagus/crop from 275 Apodiform, Passeriform and Piciform birds (40 species) which had no macroscopic evidence of trichomonosis (i.e. necrotic ingluvitis). These birds were found dead following the emergence of trichomonosis in Great Britain, 2009-2012, and were examined

Biological Aspects of the Tongue and Oropharyngeal Cavity of the Eurasian Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto, Columbiformes, Columbidae): Anatomical, Histochemical, and Ultrastructure Study.

We characterized the morphological and anatomical adaptations of the lingual microstructures of the Eurasian collared dove and discussed their implications for its dietary niche. We analyzed tongues of nine S. decaocto using histological, histochemical, stereomicroscopic, and scanning electron microscopic techniques. Our findings showed that the tongue is relatively short with a tapered apex that carries a terminal lingual nail. However, the lingual body has median scales and is bordered laterally by filiform papillae. Further, the tongue body bears a distinctive papillary crest. The tongue ro

Candidiasis in Birds (Galliformes, Anseriformes, Psittaciformes, Passeriformes, and Columbiformes): A Focus on Antifungal Susceptibility Pattern of Candida albicans and Non-albicans Isolates in Avian Clinical Specimens.

Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by Candida species which has been reported in most domestic and wild birds and mammals. In this study, 196 samples from different species of birds with suspected symptoms of candidiasis were examined. Pharyngeal swabs, cloacal swabs, and fecal samples were taken from the birds. The samples were cultured in sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) containing cycloheximide and chloramphenicol and incubated at 42°C. Suspected isolates of Candida were identified using PCR. To detect the candida genus, a primer set to target the candida rDNA (ITS1-ITS4) was selected. T

Oral trichomonosis: Description and severity of lesions in birds in Spain.

Avian trichomonosis is a parasitic disease caused by the flagellated protozoan Trichomonas gallinae. Columbiformes are the reservoir host of the parasite, with high levels of infection, but also other domestic and wild birds from a variety of orders are susceptible to the infection and development of gross lesions. In this paper we describe the type and severity of lesions in wild birds in four avian orders (Accipitriformes, Falconiformes, Strigiformes and Columbiformes). A total of 94 clinical cases diagnosed of trichomonosis were selected for the categorization of their lesions in the upper

Novel role of insulin in the regulation of glucose excretion by mourning doves (Zenaida macroura).

In mammals, insulin primarily lowers plasma glucose (PGlu) by increasing its uptake into tissues. Studies have also shown that insulin lowers PGlu in mammals by modulating glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Birds have naturally high PGlu and, although insulin administration significantly decreases glucose concentrations, birds are resistant to insulin-mediated glucose uptake into tissues. Since prior work has not examined the effects of insulin on GFR in birds, the purpose of the present study was to assess whether insulin can augment renal glucose excretion and thereby lower PGlu. Therefore, t

Molecular detection and characterization of Trichomonas spp. in wild birds in the Brazilian Pantanal.

Members of the family Trichomonadidae, particularly Trichomonas gallinae, are globally distributed avian parasites that primarily infect birds from the orders Columbiformes, Falconiformes, and Strigiformes. Although infections in Passeriformes are often subclinical, clinical cases have been reported. Transmission occurs through direct contact or indirectly via contaminated food or water, enabling infection across various avian orders, including Anseriformes, Falconiformes, Galliformes, Gruiformes, Passeriformes, Piciformes, Psittaciformes, and Strigiformes. This study aimed to assess the occur

Prevalence of Chlamydia psittaci and Other Chlamydia Species in Wild Birds in Poland.

Avian chlamydiosis is a zoonotic disease occurring in humans, poultry, and exotic birds. It has been suggested that some wild bird species play an important role as reservoirs for Chlamydia, especially Chlamydia psittaci. Whereas C. psittaci is the predominant chlamydial agent in birds, in the present study we have determined the prevalence of different species of Chlamydia among selected wild bird species in Poland using a rapid and sensitive real-time PCR method. In total, 369 free-living birds from 35 bird species and 15 orders were examined. Samples from 27 birds (7.3%) were positive for c

Molecular Detection and Genotyping of Chlamydia psittaci in Birds in Buenos Aires City, Argentina.

Chlamydia psittaci is a bacterium that infects several species of birds and mammals. It is the causal agent of avian chlamydiosis and psittacosis in humans and it is globally distributed. Chlamydia psittaci is one of the main zoonotic pathogens transmitted by birds. In Argentina, there has been limited research on the prevalence and genetic variability of C. psittaci. The aim of this study was to detect and genotype C. psittaci using molecular techniques in birds living in Buenos Aires City, Argentina, during the period 2012-2015.
