Predictors of psychiatric disorders in combat veterans.

BACKGROUND: Most previous research that has examined mental health among Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) combatants has relied on self-report measures to assess mental health outcomes; few studies have examined predictors of actual mental health diagnoses. The objective of this longitudinal investigation was to identify predictors of psychiatric disorders among Marines who deployed to combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 1113 Marines who had deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Demographic and psychosocial predictor variables from

Targeting brain insulin signaling to combat metabolic disorders.

In this issue of Neuron, Li et al.1 show that follistatin-like 1 (FSTL1) emerges as a critical hypothalamic insulin sensitizer, whose pharmacological targeting attenuates body weight gain and improves systemic glucose metabolism, highlighting brain insulin signaling amplification as a promising strategy against obesity and associated metabolic disorders.

Hsp104: a weapon to combat diverse neurodegenerative disorders.

Many of the fatal neurodegenerative disorders that plague humankind, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, are connected with the misfolding of specific proteins into a surprisingly generic fibrous conformation termed amyloid. Prior to amyloid fiber assembly, many proteins populate a common oligomeric conformation, which may be severely cytotoxic. Therapeutic innovations are desperately sought to safely reverse this aberrant protein aggregation and return proteins to normal function. Whether mammalian cells possess any such endogenous activity remains unclear. By contrast, fungi, plan

Co-twin control study of relationships among combat exposure, combat-related PTSD, and other mental disorders.

The well-documented association between combat-related PTSD (C-PTSD) and other mental disorders may be an artifact of shared familial vulnerability. This study uses a co-twin control design to examine whether the association between C-PTSD and other mental disorders persists after adjusting for shared familial vulnerability. Data were from male monozygotic twin pairs in the Vietnam Era Twin Registry. Logistic regression analyses demonstrated that combat exposure, adjusted for C-PTSD, was significantly associated with increased risk for alcohol and cannabis dependence and that C-PTSD mediated t

Nutritionally enhanced rice to combat malnutrition disorders of the poor.

Major deficiency disorders, including vitamin A deficiency, are especially common in countries in which rice is the staple food. In response to the devastating effects of vitamin A deficiency, which may include blindness and, even death, "Golden Rice" has been developed to deliver this nutrient to those populations who need it most. The case of Golden Rice is used to demonstrate the challenges of radical GMO opposition, consumer acceptance, and regulation of biotechnology-derived foods.

Topiramate in combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling psychiatric disorder that is common among combat veterans and may lead to very poor sleep and disturbing nightmares. OBJECTIVE: To examine the safety and effectiveness of topiramate as add-on therapy for the management of combat-related PTSD and to examine the effects of topiramate on sleep and alcohol consumption. METHODS: We conducted an 8-week open-label pilot study of topiramate for male combat veterans (N = 43) with PTSD, with analysis of veterans who completed the protocol. Psychometric, sleep, and alcohol consumption asse

Genistein: A promising ally in combating neurodegenerative disorders.

Neurodegenerative disorders arise when nerve cells in the brain or peripheral nervous system gradually lose functions and eventually die. Although certain therapies may alleviate some of the physical and mental symptoms associated with neurodegenerative disorders, hence slowing their progression, but no sure-shot treatment is currently available. It was shown that the rise in life expectancy and the number of elderly people in the community led to an increasing trend in the incidence and prevalence of neurodegenerative disease. Phytomolecules are demonstrating their effectiveness in combating,

Cardiac coherence and posttraumatic stress disorder in combat veterans.

BACKGROUND: The need for treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among combat veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq is a growing concern. PTSD has been associated with reduced cardiac coherence (an indicator of heart rate variability [HRV]) and deficits in early stage information processing (attention and immediate memory) in different studies. However, the co-occurrence of reduced coherence and cognition in combat veterans with PTSD has not been studied before. PRIMARY STUDY OBJECTIVE: A pilot study was undertaken to assess the covariance of coherence and information process

Olfactory identification in combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

Recent neuropsychological conceptualizations of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) implicate dysfunction of the fronto-limbic system, a brain system thought to be involved in the mediation of emotion. However, few studies have examined fronto-limbic subregions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, in PTSD. As a measure of orbitofrontal integrity, olfactory identification was assessed in 26 Vietnam War veterans with PTSD, 25 Vietnam War veterans without mental disorders, and 17 Vietnam-era, non-war-zone veterans without mental disorders. Relative to veterans without PTSD, those diagnosed with PT

Psychotic symptoms in combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is known often to be comorbid with other anxiety, mood, and substance use disorders. Psychotic symptoms have also been noted in PTSD and have been reported to be more common in Hispanic veterans. However, the occurrence of psychotic symptoms, including the degree to which they are accounted for by comorbid disorders, have received limited systematic investigation. Our study objectives were to assess psychotic symptoms according to DSM-III-R criteria in patients with a primary diagnosis of combat-related PTSD and determine the associations of tho

Psychosensory symptoms in combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder.

Psychosensory symptoms have relevance to the study of chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), given that their presence is associated with limbic system dysfunction and that several features of chronic PTSD suggest that it, too, may be associated with limbic dysfunction. The Iowa Interview for Partial Seizure-like Symptoms (IIPSS), a measure of psychosensory symptoms, was administered to a PTSD group and a comparison group. The PTSD group generated significantly higher IIPSS scores than did the other group. Within the PTSD group, higher IIPSS scores were associated with significantly mor

Head injury and combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

Given the association of injury and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), we examined whether head injury might be associated with increased frequency and severity of PTSD. Using a mail survey, we queried 143 male combat veterans with and without PTSD, who had previously participated in PTSD research in our laboratory, about their history of head injury. Respondents with a PTSD diagnosis were significantly more likely to report a history of head injury than those without. Patients with a history of head injury also reported more severe symptoms of PTSD compared with PTSD patients without head

Phenomenology and course of psychiatric disorders associated with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Studies indicate that chronic combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is frequently associated with other psychiatric disorders. Questions regarding the nature and interrelationships of these conditions require clarification. The purpose of this study was to address primary and secondary illness relationships by focusing on the specific phenomenology and course of illness onset of PTSD comorbidity. METHOD: In order to minimize confounding factors, only outpatients without recent substance use disorders were included. Sixty subjects who had been exposed to severe combat
