Alkaloid extracts from Combretum zeyheri inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium smegmatis.

BACKGROUND: Current tuberculosis regimens have failed to combat the issue of drug resistance and ethno medicines may represent a possible source of antimycobacterial agents. Combretum species are well known in African traditional medicines and used for various ailments including pneumonia, venereal diseases like syphilis, mental problems, relief of sore throats and colds, fever, and chest coughs associated with tuberculosis. Alkaloids function as either hydrogen-acceptor or hydrogen-donor in hydrogen bonding critical for the interaction between targets thus, potentiating effects of curative ag

In vitro and in silico anti-inflammatory investigation of triterpenoids from combretum trifoliatum.

A saponin-enriched extract from the Combretum trifoliatum Vent. leaves (SE-CTL) exhibited notable in vitro anti-inflammatory activity, with an IC50 of 46.39 µg/mL against LPS-induced Nitric Oxide (NO) production in RAW264.7 macrophages. Phytochemical investigation of SE-CTL led to the isolation and structure elucidation of nine triterpenoids (1-9) using HRESIMS, NMR, and comparison with literature data. Notably, triterpene acids (1 and 5) were identified for the first time from the Combretum genus. Most compounds showed significant anti-inflammatory activity (IC50 = 25.55-36.87 µM), and triter

Antibiofilm Activity of Combretum micranthum G. Don Catechin-Sugar Phytocomplex on Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Clinicians often have to face infections caused by microorganisms that are difficult to eradicate due to their resistance and/or tolerance to antimicrobials. Among these pathogens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes chronic infections due to its ability to form biofilms on medical devices, skin wounds, ulcers and the lungs of patients with Cystic Fibrosis. In this scenario, the plant world represents an important reservoir of natural compounds with antimicrobial and/or antibiofilm properties. In this study, an extract from the leaves of Combretum micranthum G. Don, named Cm4-p, which was previously
