Antibodies for the Coat Protein of Cotton Leafroll Dwarf Virus Detect Commelina sp. as an Intermediary Host for Cotton Blue Disease.

The cotton blue disease, caused by the cotton leafroll dwarf virus (CLRDV), leads to dwarfism, leaf rolling, and production loss in susceptible cotton varieties. To develop an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test to detect the virus in cotton and weeds, peptides based on the coat protein were used to produce polyclonal (α-GQE, α-PRN, and α-INK) and monoclonal (α-GQE, α-PRN, and α-NKF) antibodies. All six were tested as capture antibodies, and polyclonal α-GQE and the monocle onal α-NKF were labeled with the enzyme alkaline phosphatase and used as detection antibodies for a double ant

Septic shock, acute renal and liver failure following unsafe abortion using bitter leaves and wandering jew in northern Uganda: A case series.

Unsafe abortion is a major problem in Uganda, being one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality. Abortions are performed mostly under unsafe conditions, by people without medical training. In rural areas in northern Uganda, women often resort to traditional providers, who use local herbs as abortion remedies, usually with adverse outcomes. Little is known about the biological properties of these herbs and their toxicity profile. Here, we present the case series of two women, of 31 and 24 years of age, who underwent unsafe abortion for unintended pregnancy by using herbal medi

Photoprotection of PSI by Far-Red Light Against the Fluctuating Light-Induced Photoinhibition in Arabidopsis thaliana and Field-Grown Plants.

It has been reported that PSI photoinhibition is induced even in wild-type plants of Arabidopsis thaliana, rice and other species by exposure of leaves to fluctuating light (FL) for a few hours. Because plants are exposed to FL in nature, they must possess protective mechanisms against the FL-induced photodamage. Here, using A. thaliana grown at various irradiances, we examined PSI photoprotection by far-red (FR) light at intensities comparable with those observed in nature. Dark-treated leaves were illuminated by red FL alternating high/low light at 1,200/30 µmol m-2 s-1 for 800 ms/10 s. By t

Synthesis of Tyrosol 1,2,3-Triazole Derivatives and Their Phytotoxic Activity against Euphorbia heterophylla.

The synthesis and phytotoxic activity of a series of tyrosol 1,2,3-triazole derivatives are reported herein. Target compounds were synthesized through the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction (CuAAC), known as click reaction, and these were tested for phytotoxic activity on leaves of wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla), fleabane (Conyza sumatrensis), and tropical spiderwort (Commelina benghalensis). These are three highly noxious agricultural weeds that challenge available weed control methods, including the use of chemical herbicides. Twenty-five compounds were synthes

Transgenic tomato strategies targeting whitefly eggs from apoplastic or ovary-directed proteins.

BACKGROUND: Transgenic plants expressing proteins that target the eggs of the ubiquitous plant pest Bemisia tabaci (whitefly) could be an effective insecticide strategy. Two approaches for protein delivery are assessed using the mCherry reporter gene in transgenic tomato plants, while accommodating autofluorescence in both the plant, phloem-feeding whitefly and pedicle-attached eggs. RESULTS: Both transgenic strategies were segregated to homozygous genotype using digital PCR. The first strategy uses a glycotransferase secretion signal peptide. Despite bright apoplastic accumulation, mCherry i
