BACKGROUND: Commelina benghalensis (CB) is a small plant whose fleshy stems are used in South Africa to treat skin conditions (e.g., cancerous skin outgrowths). This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of sub-fractions of acetone extracts of CB stems on growth-associated molecular events of apoptosis and cell division cycle of Jurkat-T (JT) cells.
METHODS: Acetone extract of CB stems were subfractioned into n-hexane (F1) and dichloromethane (F2) fractions. After treatment of JT cells with these subfractions, cell proliferation, viability and apoptosis were determined using a haemocytomet

Murdannia medica is a Vietnamese traditional medicinal herb. Here, we report DNA super‑barcodes comprising the complete plastid genome (plastome, 177,455 bp) and 45S nuclear ribosomal DNA (45S nrDNA, 5,741 bp) of M. medica. The plastome has a large single‑copy (LSC, 100,132 bp), a small single‑copy (SSC, 21,125 bp), and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 28,099 bp each. It contains 115 annotated genes and has an overall A/T content of 68.2%. Plastome‑based phylogenetic analyses show that M. medica sister with M. edulis. These new genomic resources provide a valuable foundation for future cult

Tradescantia spathacea Sw. (Commelinaceae) is widely cultivated as an ornamental and medicinal plant in Southeast Asia, and its pharmacological properties are well known. On the other hand, this plant species is classified as an invasive weed in some countries. As a noxious weed, T. spathacea has been reported to disrupt the growth of native plants. However, no study has reported on its allelopathic activity. Thus, we investigated the allelopathic property and inhibitory substance of T. spathacea. The extracts of T. spathacea significantly inhibited the shoots and roots of alfalfa (Medicago sa

The international trade of lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana [Asparagaceae]) is responsible for certain introductions of the exotic species Aedes albopictus (Skuse) in California and the Netherlands. Understanding the association of this species with lucky bamboo and other ornamental plants is important from a public health standpoint. The aim of this study was to investigate the importance of indoor ornamental plants as sugar sources for adult A. albopictus. If exposed to D. sanderiana, bromeliad (Guzmania spp. hybrid [Bromeliaceae]), Moses-in-the-cradle (Rhoeo spathacea [Commelinaceae]), 10

Contact with members of the plant family Commelinaceae, which includes wandering jew (Commelina spp. formerly called Tradescantia spp.) and inch plant (Callisia fragrans), can cause cell-mediated contact dermatitis in dogs. However, reports of canine IgE-mediated hypersensitivity to these plants have not been published. The purpose of this study was to discover whether IgE antibodies specific for extractable components of C. fragrans could be identified in serum from a dog that had anaphylactic shock after exposure to the plant and after skin patch testing with the sap from a leaf of C. fragra

COVID-19, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has reached pandemic proportions with negative impacts on global health, the world economy and human society. The clinical picture of COVID-19, and the fact that Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a receptor of SARS-CoV-2, suggests that SARS-CoV-2 infection induces an imbalance in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). We review clinical strategies that are attempting to rebalance the RAS in COVID-19 patients by using ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, or agonists of angiotensin-II receptor type 2
