The commodification of the body and its parts.

The human body--and its parts--has long been a target for commodification within myriad cultural settings. A discussion of commodification requires that one consider, first, the significance of the body within anthropology and, second, what defines a body "part." After exploring these initial questions, this article outlines dominant theoretical approaches to commodification within anthropology, with Mauss and Marx figuring prominently. The discussion then turns to historically well-documented forms of body commodification: These include slavery and other oppressive labor practices; female rep

Manufacturing desire: the commodification of female sexual dysfunction.

The process of bringing new drugs to market interweaves commercialism, science, clinical medicine, and governmental regulation. Through their authority and public persona as medical experts, academic clinical trial researchers studying these pharmaceuticals are integral to this process, serving as mediators between producers (the pharmaceutical companies) and consumers (clinicians and patients) of new drugs through a complex set of exchange networks. Using examples from my ethnographic research on the search for pharmaceuticals to treat what has become known as female sexual dysfunction, this

Commodification arguments for the legal prohibition of organ sale.

The commercial trading of human organs, along with various related activities (for example, advertising) was criminalised throughout Great Britain under the Human Organ Transplants Act 1989. This paper critically assesses one type of argument for this, and similar, legal prohibitions: commodification arguments. Firstly, the term 'commodification' is analysed. This can be used to refer to either social practices or to attitudes. Commodification arguments rely on the second sense and are based on the idea that having a commodifying attitude to certain classes of thing (e.g. bodies or persons) is

The Locust Fungus: A Global History of Colonial Circulation and Commodification*.

This paper examines the collection, cultivation, and distribution of the "locust fungus" in late-nineteenth century South Africa, India, and Argentina. In 1896 an amateur microscopist, Andrew W. Cooper, brought the bodies of locusts infected by a parasitic fungus to the Cape of Good Hope Colonial Bacteriological Institute, hoping that fungi collected from these specimens could be used to destroy locust swarms. Scholars have shown how empires attempted to apply scientific fixes to the problem of colonial pest control in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Yet these fixes were not

Bodies of knowledge: experience, commodification and labour in the imperial wildlife trade.

The production of zoological knowledge in the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth was closely tied to the supply of animal bodies to institutions like zoological gardens and university departments, sustained by a growing wildlife trade. This trade, however, used, developed and altered independent forms of knowledge that relied heavily on skills and competencies formed through experience and familiarization. These were 'embodied' in the sense that they were not only applied to the handling of these animals, but also shaped by the very animal bodies that were to be handled. Using the

The political economy of publication: marketing, commodification, and qualitative scholarly work.

The globalized economy, fueled by late capitalism, has pressed forward its necessity for accumulation and expanding growth into the information and knowledge economy. One result has been the privatization of essentially public knowledge, knowledge produced at public universities, often with public, federal dollars. Both the "mania for ranking academic institutions," where universities compete for students, tuition dollars, and external funding, and the incessant creep of the managerial "audit culture" contribute to this situation. Although there is little individual scholars can do to resist g

From the emergence of psychiatry to neoliberal logic: the commodification of contemporary suffering.

This study discusses the concepts of normality and pathologization in contemporaneity from a historical context of the emergence and growth of psychiatry associated with the development of neoliberalism. The psychiatric knowledge begins to grown allied to an economic management of the government, transforming the suffering in commodity. Therefore, the psychiatric reform face challenges against the asylum logic, still present in society, which seeks to catalog diseases and diagnose natural issues of everyday life. Thus, we seek to understand how neoliberal logic is associated with psychiatric k

"Come back when you're dying:" the commodification of AIDS among California's urban poor.

As with any other long-term illness, the decline in health that accompanies symptomatic HIV infection often has a profound negative impact on employment and personal finances. However, research to date on the financial consequences of AIDS has focused largely on middle-class working individuals, and cannot account for the experiences of those who are already poor and unemployed at the time of their infection. We conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with 33 Californian heterosexual couples in which one partner was infected with HIV and the other was HIV-negative. Most couples interviewed w

A Hard Pill to Swallow: Pharmacy Chain Dominance and the Commodification of Mental Health in Peru.

Peru's mental health system remains marked by chronic underinvestment, fragmentation, and weak regulation, leaving many without adequate access to care. In this context, private pharmacy chains have become central actors in the provision of mental health services, functioning as de facto points of access for psychotropic medications. Drawing on the concept of institutional corruption and a rights-based analysis, this paper examines how their dominance has transformed access to psychotropic medication into a market-controlled process in which commercial interests shape treatment pathways, reinf

The commodification of nursing education: A discursive paper on academic identity, faculty work, and the future of nursing knowledge.

BACKGROUND: The nursing and midwifery educator workforce is increasingly seen as key to sustaining healthcare, driving professional education, and shaping nursing knowledge. However, debates often focus mainly on numbers, such as shortages, recruitment, and expanding capacity. Less attention is given to the institutional and epistemic factors impacting academic nursing work. AIMS: To critically examine how commodifying nursing education affects academic identity, faculty work, educator sustainability, professional formation, and the future of nursing knowledge. DESIGN: Discursive paper. MET

Beyond High-Stakes Testing: Learner Trust, Educational Commodification, and the Loss of Medical School Professionalism.

With ever-growing emphasis on high-stakes testing in medical education, such as the Medical College Admission Test and the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1, there has been a recent surge of concerns on the rise of a "Step 1 climate" within U.S. medical schools. The authors propose an alternative source of the "climate problem" in current institutions of medical education. Drawing on the intertwined concepts of trust and professionalism as organizational constructs, the authors propose that the core problem is not hijacking-by-exam but rather a hijackable learning environment

From state commodification to local reproduction of vulnerability: ethnographic insights from a Risk Zone Urban Renewal Project in Turkey.

This paper explores how vulnerability is not only defined by the state but also actively reshaped through policy implementation and lived experience. Drawing on ethnographic research in Eskişehir, Turkey, I propose an analytical distinction between the 'commodification of vulnerability'-framing risk in technoscientific and moral terms to justify intervention-and the 'reproduction of vulnerability'-capturing the emergent precarity produced by such action. Following the 2011 Van earthquakes, Turkey's central government advanced disaster prevention as a national imperative. In 2012, Law No. 6306

Decommodifying and Humanizing Health Care: Revisiting Pellegrino's Ethical Imperative.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points A quarter of a century since bioethicist Edmund Pellegrino warned about the commodification of health and health care, the problem has significantly worsened. Commodification of health and health care objectifies and dehumanizes people and undermines core concepts of holistic person-centered health, much less core human rights, including fulfillment of human potential and comprehensive health care. Multilevel sustained strategies and multisector coalitions are required to decommodify and humanize health and health care based on mental models, national and state polici

Womb to rent: the ethical and legal implications of surrogacy in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Surrogacy is a form of assisted human reproduction whereby a surrogate woman carries a pregnancy for a commissioning couple or individual. There are two types of surrogacy, traditional and gestational. Worldwide we have seen a rapid increase in the use of surrogacy. Despite this, there is a lack of consensus internationally on the laws governing surrogacy. In Ireland, surrogacy remains largely unregulated. Currently, there is no specific legislation for surrogacy. This review aims to discuss its current regulatory status and associated ethical issues. AIMS: On surrogacy from an Ir

The special case of property rights in umbilical cord blood for transplantation.

In this Article, Professor Stephen R. Munzer makes a case for limited property rights in umbilical cord blood. Professor Munzer proposes that the unique nature of cord blood distinguishes it from body wastes and qualifies it as a body part in which property rights vest. Employing a theory of property, based in part on the articulation of the principles of utility and efficiency, justice and equality, and "labor-desert," he explores legal and philosophical arguments that justify the acknowledgment of such rights. He also discusses concerns over alleged generous granting of patents in the area o

AI-driven insights into the impact of tourism on local cultures: a machine learning approach.

Tourism is increasingly recognized as a powerful driver of economic growth, spatial restructuring, and cultural change, yet empirical evidence on how tourism intensity and short-term rentals reshape local cultures remains fragmented. Existing research is often split between qualitative case studies of touristification and gentrification, and quantitative models that forecast visitor flows but provide limited insight into downstream cultural externalities such as authenticity loss, commodification, noise, and crowding. Moreover, many high-performing machine learning forecasters operate as opaqu

Regulating the international surrogacy market:the ethics of commercial surrogacy in the Netherlands and India.

It is unclear what proper remuneration for surrogacy is, since countries disagree and both commercial and altruistic surrogacy have ethical drawbacks. In the presence of cross-border surrogacy, these ethical drawbacks are exacerbated. In this article, we explore what would be ethical remuneration for surrogacy, and suggest regulations for how to ensure this in the international context. A normative ethical analysis of commercial surrogacy is conducted. Various arguments against commercial surrogacy are explored, such as exploitation and commodification of surrogates, reproductive capacities, a

Ethical challenges in reproductive donation tourism: a qualitative study of clinicians' perspectives in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive donation tourism is a complex phenomenon with profound ethical implications which also affects Iran. However, studies in this context are limited. This study explores the ethical challenges associated with donor-based reproductive tourism from the perspective of Iranian clinicians, focusing on how they interpret these challenges within Iran's legal, religious, and institutional context. METHODS: A conventional content analysis study was used to explore the ethical concerns in donation-related reproductive tourism perceived by clinicians in Iran. Twenty-two experts who
