The Emergence of Non-communicable Disease in Indonesia.

Based on data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health Information Center, the estimated population of Indonesia in 2016 was approximately 258,704,986 people, consisted of 129,988,690 men and 128,716,296 women. This number of Indonesian population represents young population since the proportion of population aged 0-14 years is more than that aged >14 years. Meanwhile, the proportion of population aged 50 years and above is significantly reduced, which is thought to be due to high mortality rate in the middle-aged population. The mortality rate in  Indonesia is dominated by non-communicable dise

Burden of Non-Communicable Diseases and Emerging Attention in Gandaki Province, Nepal.

Non-communicable diseases have become a major health challenge globally, including in Nepal. Deaths due to non-communicable diseases in Nepal are increasing, accounting more than half of total deaths. Major contributors to deaths due to non-communicable diseases include cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, cancers, digestive diseases such as pancreatitis and cirrhosis of liver, and diabetes. To address this, Gandaki Province organized integrated screening sessions for non-communicable diseases covering 2,976 high-risk individuals aged 40 years and above from six districts. Th

Communicable diseases in complex emergencies: impact and challenges.

Communicable diseases, alone or in combination with malnutrition, account for most deaths in complex emergencies. Factors promoting disease transmission interact synergistically leading to high incidence rates of diarrhoea, respiratory infection, malaria, and measles. This excess morbidity and mortality is avoidable as effective interventions are available. Adequate shelter, water, food, and sanitation linked to effective case management, immunisation, health education, and disease surveillance are crucial. However, delivery mechanisms are often compromised by loss of health staff, damage to i

Emerging role of exosomes as a liquid biopsy tool for diagnosis, prognosis & monitoring treatment response of communicable & non-communicable diseases.

From an initial thought of being used as a cellular garbage bin to a promising target for liquid biopsies, the role of exosomes has drastically evolved in just a few years of their discovery in 1983. Exosomes are naturally secreted nano-sized vesicles, abundant in all types of body fluids and can be isolated intact even from the stored biological samples. Being stable carriers of genetic material (cellular DNA, mRNA and miRNA) and having specific cargo (signature content of originating cells), exosomes play a crucial role in pathogenesis and have been identified as a novel source of biomarkers

Dust-borne emerging contaminants: an underrecognized risk factor for non-communicable diseases in older Chinese adults.

Given global aging and the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), identifying environmental risk factors in older adults is critical. This study investigated the associations between dust-borne emerging contaminant (EC) exposures and several high-incidence NCDs in older adults. 137 province-level dust measurements of microplastics, liquid crystal monomers, organophosphate esters, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances across 23 provinces were used to estimate exposure levels for 14 466 Chinese participants (mean age 84.7). Propensity score-adjusted logistic regression showed sign

Emergency response vaccines: lessons learned in response to communicable diseases.

In response to recent political and epidemiological events, the availability of emergency response vaccines has received high priority on the global agenda. An emergency response vaccine is defined as a vaccine of public health importance that should be available to all people at risk against epidemic, pandemic or global threat situations. This review focuses on global threat vaccines, those that would be used in the case of an emerging pathogen or the intentional release of an agent to which there is a low level of population immunity. The development and use of such vaccines requires attenti

Communicable Disease Screening and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Prevention in the Emergency Department.

Emergency departments (ED) provide care to populations with high rates of communicable diseases, like HIV, hepatitis C virus, and syphilis. For many patients, the ED is their sole entry point into the healthcare system and they do not routinely access screening and prevention services elsewhere. As such, the ED can serve an important public health role through communicable disease identification, treatment, and prevention. In this article, we examine national recommendations, peer-reviewed literature, and expert consensus to provide cutting edge strategies for implementing communicable infecti

Emerging trends in non-communicable disease mortality in South Africa, 1997 - 2010.

OBJECTIVES: National trends in age-standardised death rates (ASDRs) for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in South Africa (SA) were identified between 1997 and 2010. METHODS: As part of the second National Burden of Disease Study, vital registration data were used after validity checks, proportional redistribution of missing age, sex and population group, demographic adjustments for registration incompleteness, and identification of misclassified AIDS deaths. Garbage codes were redistributed proportionally to specified codes by age, sex and population group. ASDRs were calculated using mid-yea

Non-communicable diseases: is their emergence in industrialized societies related to changes in neuroendocrine function?

This hypothesis suggests that industrialization alters the human neuroendocrine system. The neuroendocrine changes come about because of changes in environmental stimuli. It is further proposed that changes in neuroendocrine function can account for the contrasting pattern of non-communicable diseases in traditional and industrialized societies. The hypothesis is based on subtle clinical differences in traditional and industrialized societies, and the evolving concept of neuroendocrine regulation of physiological processes. Compared to traditional societies, individuals from industrialized com

Reframing Emergency Medical Service in the context of chronic non-communicable disease and palliative care.

BACKGROUND: Emergency Medical Service (EMS) is often the initial primary contact for patients with non-communicable disease (NCD) with symptom exacerbation. EMS personnel are not trained to manage patients requiring this type of care, or recognise the need for palliative care or expert consultation. AIM: To describe how EMS' are often responsible for managing patients with NCDs and symptom exacerbation and to assess whether palliative care and support by EMS in the out-of-hospital sector should be considered. SETTING: The study took place in the southern peninsula of Cape Town, including urb

Glaucoma blindness-A rapidly emerging non-communicable ocular disease in India: Addressing the issue with advocacy.

Glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness, can be prevented or stabilized the progression if identified early and managed it appropriately. In India, around 12 million people suffer from glaucoma, and 1.5 million are blind due to it, so making the third most common cause of blindness. More than 75% of glaucoma are undiagnosed, which perhaps represent the submerged portion of the iceberg phenomenon of the traditional disease explanations. Though glaucoma per se does not lead to mortality, glaucoma blindness is categorized as a severe form of disability (category VI) out of seven World

Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Management During Disasters and Humanitarian Emergencies: A Review of the Experiences Reported by Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs).

Background/Objectives: Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) place an excessive strain on health systems in disaster-affected settings and may lead to a parallel public health emergency lasting months or years after a disaster. Although NCDs are increasingly recognized as a major challenge in disasters and humanitarian emergencies, a dedicated and standardized response plan is missing, as well as a shortage of evidence-based guidelines for NCD management in theses contexts. Over the years, Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) have traditionally been deployed to manage acute conditions such as trauma and

Emerging chronic non-communicable diseases in rural communities of Northern Ethiopia: evidence using population-based verbal autopsy method in Kilite Awlaelo surveillance site.

INTRODUCTION: In countries where most deaths are outside health institutions and medical certification of death is absent, verbal autopsy (VA) method is used to estimate population level causes of death. METHODS: VA data were collected by trained lay interviewers for 409 deaths in the surveillance site. Two physicians independently assigned cause of death using the International Classification of Diseases manual. RESULTS: In general, infectious and parasitic diseases accounted for 35.9% of death, external causes 15.9%, diseases of the circulatory system 13.4% and perinatal causes 12.5% of to

The role of infections in the emergence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs): Compelling needs for novel strategies in the developing world.

The emergence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) follows multiple aetiological pathways requiring recognition for effective control and prevention. Infections are proving to be conventional, emerging and re-emerging aetiological factors for many NCDs. This review explores the possible mechanisms by which infections induce NCDs citing examples of studies in Africa and elsewhere where NCDs and infections are proposed or confirmed to be causally linked and also discusses the implications and challenges of these observations for science and medicine. The need to re-evaluate and expand early commu

Non-communicable disease prevalence among asylum seekers and Swiss nationals: a comparative cross-sectional study in emergency care.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading causes of death worldwide. Ongoing global migration increases the proportion of recently arrived migrants in many countries. Yet data on NCD prevalence and care among asylum seekers (AS), a marginalised population with barriers to healthcare access, remain scarce. Emergency departments (EDs) often serve as healthcare access points for vulnerable populations, providing valuable data to identify unmet needs and health inequities. The primary objective of this study was to assess NCD prevalence, along with care, patterns and ED consulta

Early Experiences in the Integration of Non-communicable Diseases into Emergency Primary Health Care, Beni Region, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND: Health services in humanitarian crises increasingly integrate the management of non-communicable diseases into primary care. As there is little description of such programs, this case study aims to describe the initial implementation of non-communicable disease management within emergency primary care in the conflict-affected Beni Region of Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). OBJECTIVES: We implemented and evaluated a primary care approach to hypertension and diabetes management to assess the feasibility of patient monitoring, early clinical and programmatic outcomes, and cost

Supporting a rapid primary care response to emergent communicable disease threats with PACK (Practical Approach to Care Kit) in Florianópolis, Brazil.

Emerging infectious diseases present a significant challenge to healthcare systems with their need for a rapid response and reallocation of resources. This paper explores the implementation of the Practical Approach to Care Kit (PACK) programme in Florianópolis, Brazil as a strategic tool for reinforcing primary healthcare (PHC) responses to emergent communicable diseases. With its focus on enhancing PHC delivery in resource-limited settings, PACK provides a flexible, evidence-based framework that integrates into local health systems. The paper describes experiences adapting PACK to provide ra

Clinical and ethical challenges for emergency departments during communicable disease outbreaks: Can lessons from Ebola Virus Disease be applied to the COVID-19 pandemic?

EDs fulfil a frontline function during public health emergencies (PHEs) and will play a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic. This perspective article draws on qualitative data from a longitudinal, ethnographic study of an Australian tertiary ED to illustrate the clinical and ethical challenges faced by EDs during PHEs. Interview data collected during the 2014 Ebola Virus Disease PHE of International Concern suggest that ED clinicians have a strong sense of professional responsibility, but this can be compromised by increased visibility of risk and sub-optimal engagement from hospital man
