Imported communicable diseases in Singapore.

Most communicable diseases in Singapore have been brought under control and some eliminated. In recent years, an increasing proportion of the reported cases turned out to be imported. Between the period 1977 and 1982, 96% of malaria, 44% of paratyphoid, 32% of typhoid, 20% of leprosy, 11% of acute viral hepatitis, 7% of dengue fever/dengue haemorrhagic fever and 7% of cholera were imported. About 10% of the notified tuberculosis cases were non-residents while all the sporadic cases of poliomyelitis (except in 1977) and diphtheria (except in 1982) were contracted outside Singapore. The majority

Trends in importation of communicable diseases into Singapore.

INTRODUCTION: Singapore is a transition country in Southeast Asia that is both vulnerable and receptive to the introduction and re-introduction of imported communicable diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For a 10-year period between 1998 and 2007 we studied the trend, epidemiological characteristics, proportion of imported versus local transmission of malaria, viral hepatitis (hepatitis A and E), enteric fevers (typhoid and paratyphoid), cholera, chikungunya and SARS. RESULTS: Of a total of 4617 cases of the above selected diseases notified in Singapore, 3599 (78.0%) were imported. The majorit

Focus on non-communicable diseases: an important agenda for the African continent.

In Africa together with risk factors for cardiovascular diseases such as systemic hypertension, diabetes, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption and overweight, there is an important role of poverty-related conditions in determining the burden of cardiovascular diseases. The management of common diseases such as untreated congenital heart disease, rheumatic heart valve disease and cardiomyopathies, highly prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa, imposes an unsustainable burden to the health systems in this continent, and may hamper the efforts towards Africa's alignment with the Global Agenda for non-co

Perceived importance of warning labels among Mexican adults with non-communicable diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Identify the perceived importance of front-of-package warning labels in purchase decisions of industrialized food products among Mexican adults with self-reported noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the 2021 Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey labeling and health questionnaires were analyzed. Logistic regression models adjusted for confounding variables and health data were used to estimate the mean predicted probability of considering each warning label (WL) as the most important. RESULTS: Overall, 80.9% considered at least one WL important.

Importance of intersectoral co-ordination in the control of communicable diseases, with special reference to plague in Tanzania.

Human health, agriculture, including livestock, energy, education, wildlife, construction, forestry and trade sectors are inter-related and their co-ordination is an important pre-requisite for successful control of most communicable diseases including plague. Similar linkage between research, policy, training and extension activities in each sector are essential for any successful control strategy. Inadequate agricultural produce, inaccessibility of people to the available food and ignorance on proper preparation and usage of available food materials are responsible for malnutrition, and maln

An Overview of Apple Varieties and the Importance of Apple Consumption in the Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases-A Narrative Review.

Non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, and asthma are increasingly common due to factors like industrialization, urbanization, fast-paced life, stress, sedentary lifestyle, and unbalanced diet in the 21st century. These chronic conditions are a global epidemic, being among the top causes of death worldwide. Preventing these diseases through a nutritious diet is crucial, and scientific studies suggest that appropriate fruit intake, particularly apples, can lower the risk of various health issues. Apples, rich in bioactive compounds, vitamins, minerals, and

Ethnopharmacological appraisal of culturally important medicinal plants and polyherbal formulas used against communicable diseases in Rodrigues Island.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The tropical island of Rodrigues is one of three islands that constitute the Mascarene archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Currently considered as a biodiversity hotspot, the island has also a resilient history in the use of traditional medicine. However, there has been no ethnopharmacological study to document quantitatively such traditional practice against communicable diseases (CD), which currently accounts for 6.61% annual death and 30.7% attendances in public hospitals. The aim of the present study was to collect, analyse, and document traditionally used medi

Outbreak prone communicable diseases of public health importance in the northern districts of West Bengal - Current status & the way forward.

India is perilously poised on the threshold of an explosion of infectious diseases, some of which have witnessed re-emergence while others await apposite opportunity to do so. The State of West Bengal is uniquely positioned with its innate geographical vulnerabilities that favour outbreaks of a host of infectious diseases. The northern districts of this State are well known endemic areas for many outbreak prone communicable diseases like malaria, Japanese encephalitis, scrub typhus, dengue and kala-azar. An outbreak of Nipah virus in the recent past is a pointer towards the emerging and re-eme

[The epidemiologic situation of infectious disease in West Germany in 1979].

A survey is given of the occurrence of communicable diseases in the Federal Republic of Germany including Berlin (West) in 1979. The epidemiological situation was dominated by salmonellosis, infectious hepatitis, scarlet fever, and meningitis. There was a striking increase in imported tropical diseases, such as malaria and leprosy. Poliomyelitis continued to decrease. There was an insignificant number of influenza cases in the winter 79/80. Due to the coming into force of the Amendment of the Federal Communicable Diseases Act on 1 January 1980 the obligation to notify communicable diseases has

Migration Medicine.

Migration is increasing and practitioners need to be aware of the unique health needs of this population. The prevalence of infectious diseases among migrants varies and generally mirrors that of their countries of origin, but is modified by the circumstance of migration, the presence of pre-arrival screening programs and post arrival access to health care. To optimize the health of migrants practitioners; (1) should take all opportunities to screen migrants at risk for latent infections such as tuberculosis, chronic hepatitis B and C, HIV, strongyloidiasis, schistosomiasis and Chagas disease,

[Strategic thinking on management of cross-boundary imported schistosomiasis].

Schistosomiasis is prevalent in 78 countries and territories worldwide, while the eastern and western parts of sub-Sahara Africa bear the highest disease burden due to schistosomiasis. Recently, climate change, international trade and travel, urbanization and war have increased the risk of cross-boundary importation and transmission of schistosomiasis, and schistosomiasis has increasingly become a public health concern in non-endemic countries and territories. Biomphalaria straminea, the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, has colonized in southern China and its habitats continue to move

[Current status and transmission risks of oversea imported schistosomiasis in China].

With the acceleration of the process of global integration, China's international exchanges and cooperation with other countries have been further increased. The personnel exchange has led to the frequent occurrence of imported schistosomiasis from abroad, which seriously endangers people's health. This paper reviews the prevalence and transmission risks of oversea imported schistosomiasis, providing the reference for the entry and exit health quarantine and prevention and control of schistosomiasis in China.
