[Communication disorders: differential diagnosis].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate components of clinical semiology in the differential diagnosis of communication disorders (TC) and their possible biological markers. We consider two groups, according to the communication disorders themselves and their effects on social interaction. In the first case both aspects are affected in parallel and in the second it is predominantly social interaction which is affected. DEVELOPMENT: In the first groups we studied dyslalias, dyrhrythmias, acquired aphasias, TC relation to epilepsy, types of seizures and EEG discharges. The dysphasia of development and epilepsy

[Communication Support for Neurological Disorders].

Communication support for patients with neurological disorders extends beyond high-technology communication aids. It also includes non-aided and low-technology methods and requires flexible selection and the combined use of these methods depending on the situation. Gaining experience with various communication strategies in a stepwise manner from an early stage enables the smoother introduction of advanced communication devices when necessary. Effective support must be tailored to the disease stage, as communication abilities and needs change over time. In this context, collaboration among mul

Managing communication disorders in stroke.

Dysphasias, dyspraxias, and dysarthrias are communication disorders that may be experienced following a stroke. Nursing assessment of language and speech is based on an understanding of normal language and speech systems. Location of the stroke and clinical assessment findings uncovered through the history and physical examination allow identification of language and speech deficits. Language is examined by assessing spontaneous speech, verbal comprehension, reading, writing, and ability to name and repeat. Speech is examined by testing motor function and reflexes of cranial nerves VII, IX, X,

Grammatical comprehension in language and communication disorders.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) have traditionally been considered separate disorders, although some similarities and overlaps in certain aspects of language have been detected. In this paper, we compare the deficits in receptive grammar in these two disorders. We analyse the proportion of grammatical errors in relation to semantic complexity in 84 children divided into four groups: children with autism language impairment (ALI), with autism language normal (ALN), with DLD, and with typical development (TD), all groups with the same age of receptive voc

Etiologies and molecular mechanisms of communication disorders.

Quantitative behavioral genetic studies have made it clear that communication disorders such as reading disability, language impairment, and autism spectrum disorders follow some basic principles: (1) complex disorders have complex causes, in which each clinical disorder is influenced by a number of separate genes; and (2) at least some behaviorally related disorders are influenced by the same genes. Recent advances in molecular and statistical methods have confirmed these principles and are now leading to an understanding of the genes that may be involved in these disorders and how their disr

The effects of an interprofessional patient-centered communication intervention for patients with communication disorders.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This small scale study examined the influence of an interprofessional (IP) evidence based patient-centered communication intervention (PCCI), delivered by trained nurses in collaboration with Speech Language Pathologists, on patient outcomes in an active stroke rehabilitation setting. DESIGN AND METHODS: The setting constraints imposed the use of a single-group pretest and post-test design to determine the influence of the intervention on patient outcomes. Validated tools measured patient quality of life (QOL), depressive symptoms and satisfaction with care. RESULTS: Pa

Microbiome and Communication Disorders: A Tutorial for Clinicians.

PURPOSE: Emerging research in the field of microbiology has indicated that host-microbiota interactions play a significant role in regulating health and disease. Whereas the gut microbiome has received the most attention, distinct microbiota in other organs (mouth, larynx, and trachea) may undergo microbial shifts that impact disease states. A comprehensive understanding of microbial mechanisms and their role in communication and swallowing deficits may have downstream diagnostic and therapeutic implications. METHOD: A literature review was completed to provide a broad overview of the microbi

Predicting Communicative Participation in Adults Across Communication Disorders.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which communicative participation differs across diagnoses and if there are common predictor variables for communicative participation across diagnoses. Method Survey data on self-report variables including communicative participation were collected from 141 community-dwelling adults with communication disorders due to Parkinson's disease, cerebrovascular accident, spasmodic dysphonia, or vocal fold immobility (VFI). Analysis of covariance was used to determine communicative participation differences between diagnoses, with age, se

Temporomandibular disorders in fibromyalgia syndrome: a short-communication.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic painful syndrome and the coexistence of a painful condition caused by Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and FMS has been frequently raised for several studies, however, more likely hypothesis is that a set of FMS characteristics may lead to the onset of TMD symptoms and they are not merely coexisting conditions. Therefore, our aim is presenting a review of literature about the relation between fibromyalgia and the signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders. For this purpose, a bibliographic search was performed of the period of 1990-2013, in the

Genes, cognition, and communication: insights from neurodevelopmental disorders.

Twin and family studies have demonstrated that most cognitive traits are moderately to highly heritable. Neurodevelopmental disorders such as dyslexia, autism, and specific language impairment (SLI) also show strong genetic influence. Nevertheless, it has proved difficult for researchers to identify genes that would explain substantial amounts of variance in cognitive traits or disorders. Although this observation may seem paradoxical, it fits with a multifactorial model of how complex human traits are influenced by numerous genes that interact with one another, and with the environment, to pr

[Communication disorders associated with motor neuron disease: MND].

The aim of the paper was to present voice and speech disorders associated with motor neuron disease-MND. Two cases of MND were described. Communication problems--dysphonia and dysartria were one of their early manifestations. It is supposed that sulcus vocalis, which is the result of the degeneration process of the vocal muscle, is the laryngeal presentation of MND.

Parents and families of children with communication disorders.

The role of parents in the development of the communicative competence of their children has been of growing interest to researchers and practitioners in the field of speech and language therapy. Researchers have attempted to define and test specific hypotheses regarding the nature and degree of the influence of parental interaction styles upon the developing child's pragmatic skills. The literature includes studies regarding normal children and those with speech and language impairments. Practitioners have endeavoured to move towards a firmer framework of partnership with parents which will u

Managing Sensory Impairments and Communication Differences in Psychotic Disorders.

Sensory impairments, including visual and auditory loss, are common across the lifespan and are increasingly recognized as risk factors for psychiatric disorders, particularly psychosis. Evidence suggests that disruptions in sensory processing, multisensory integration, and self-other signal differentiation may contribute to cortical disorganization overlapping with mechanisms implicated in psychotic illness. The psychiatric consequences of sensory impairment are influenced by chronicity and timing of onset, with congenital vs acquired loss conferring differing risks and clinical presentations
