Community health nurses and family planning services for men.

Current concerns about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), as well as unintended pregnancy, have drawn increasing attention to reproductive health services for men. This report presents information about responses by 844 community health nurses (CHNs) to a self-administered mailed questionnaire that included questions about the extent of the nurses' involvement in delivering or administering family planning services to men, their knowledge and attitudes about men and family planning, and their preparation for working with men. Our sample included

Describing Intellectual Disability in Local Public Health Community Health Assessments and Community Health Improvement Plans.

To describe intellectual disability inclusion in local health department (LHD) community health assessments (CHAs) and community health improvement plans (CHIPs), this study used a cross-sectional design, analyzing CHAs and CHIPs of Public Health Accreditation Board-accredited LHDs. We find that approximately 5% (n = 17) of CHAs included an intellectual disability (ID) partner in the development process. Less than 2% (n = 3) of CHIPs included a goal, objective, or activity that specifically included people with ID. Many CHAs used language that identified ID as a health outcome to be prevented.

Applying social science and public health methods to community-based pandemic planning.

Pandemic influenza is a unique threat to communities, affecting schools, businesses, health facilities and individuals in ways not seen in other emergency events. This paper aims to outline a local government project which utilised public health and social science research methods to facilitate the creation of an emergency response plan for pandemic influenza coincidental to the early stages of the 2009 H1N1 ('swine flu') outbreak. A multi-disciplinary team coordinated the creation of a pandemic influenza emergency response plan which utilised emergency planning structure and concepts and enco

Strategic and Performance Planning in US Local Health Departments: A Comparative Analysis of Strategic, Community Health Improvement, and Quality Improvement Plans.

CONTEXT: Local health departments (LHDs) are a critical component of the US public health infrastructure. To guide their work and evaluate progress, LHDs develop and maintain a range of planning documents, including strategic plans (SPs), community health improvement plans (CHIPs), and quality improvement plans (QIPs). OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to provide information on current LHD practices related to strategic planning and performance improvement. DESIGN: The study used an environmental scan and document analysis of a sample of 93 plans from 31 LHDs to explore commonalities and

Optimization strategy of community planning for environmental health and public health in smart city under multi-objectives.

As population density increases, environmental hygiene and public health become increasingly severe. As the space where residents stay for the longest time and have the most profound impact on their physical and mental health, the quality of the environment in urban communities largely determines the degree to which residents engage in physical activity, bear the risk of pollution exposure, and obtain healthy food. Therefore, in order to ensure the physical and mental health of residents, this study proposes community planning guided by environmental hygiene and public health, and establishes

AIDS and family planning counseling of psychiatrically ill women in community mental health clinics.

Eighty-two of 83 mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, were surveyed to determine their attitudes and behaviors toward AIDS prevention and family planning counseling with psychiatrically ill female outpatients. Nearly all reported that information should be provided on AIDS and family planning. However, they reported that they had raised topics of AIDS with only 19% of patients and family planning with only 25% of patients. This lack of communication was confirmed by patients' own reports. Factors which might relate to this lack of communication are explored.

Optimising the role of the public health community in planning and implementing large-scale evacuations.

The public health community must advocate for the design and administration of plans and regulations that protect public health, promote effective medical response in evacuations, and require active participation by public health officials in evacuation planning. The public health response during recent natural disasters has highlighted the inadequacies of meeting the needs of complex populations of vulnerable individuals. Critical issues in the emergency management and public health systems with regard to the evaluation of a population are delineated, and potential solutions are suggested.

Planning and evaluating strategies for AIDS health education interventions in the Muslim community in Uganda.

In 1992 the Islamic Medical Association of Uganda designed an AIDS prevention project. A baseline survey was conducted to assess prevailing knowledge, attitudes, and practices among the Muslim communities in two districts. A low rate of incorrect beliefs about HIV transmission was found, although gaps in knowledge remain, particularly regarding vertical transmission and asymptomatic HIV infection. Less than 10% knew that condoms can protect against HIV transmission. Lack of knowledge was documented regarding the risk of HIV transmission associated with practices common in the Islamic community

Planning and Implementing Social Media Communication in a Public Health Crisis: An Analytical Perspective.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: The use of social media as a public communication tool by public health service organisations (PHSOs) gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as the pandemic evolved into a prolonged public health crisis, PHSOs faced challenges in effectively engaging the public with crisis directives. Despite its growing importance, there is scant research on how PHSOs formulated and implemented their social media communication plans as part of their pandemic management. METHODS: Textual analysis and quality appraisal of the first COVID-19 pandemic management plans and the p

Communicating stroke survivors' health and further needs for support in care-planning meetings.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study will illustrate how stroke survivors, their relatives and different professionals communicated in care-planning meetings when planning care for patients after their discharge from hospital. We wanted to know what topics participants were talking about, to what extent they were involved in the discussion and how the communication was organized. BACKGROUND: Communication in health care is sometimes problematic because of the participants' asymmetrical positions when negotiating how to understand the patients' future care. METHODS: A qualitative and a quantitativ

Multiple risk factors and the likelihood of patient-physician communication and health maintenance services in medicare health plans.

This study examined both individual and combined effects of race, education, and health-based risk factors on health maintenance services among Medicare plan members. Data were from 110 238 elderly completing the 2006 Medicare Health Outcomes Survey. Receipt of recommended patient-physician communication and interventions for urinary incontinence, physical activity, falls, and osteoporosis was modeled as a function of risk factors. Low education decreased the odds of receiving services; poor health increased odds. Race had little effect. Evidence suggested moderation among competing effects. W

Family Planning Counseling in Your Pocket: A Mobile Job Aid for Community Health Workers in Tanzania.

To address low contraceptive use in Tanzania, a pilot intervention using a mobile job aid was developed to guide community health workers (CHWs) to deliver integrated counseling on family planning, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In this article, we describe the process of developing the family planning algorithms and implementation of the mobile job aid, discuss how the job aid supported collection of real-time data for decision making, and present the cost of the overall system based on an evaluation of the pilot. The family planning algorithm was developed, beginning

Planning a Perinatal Mental Health Intervention for a Post-Disaster Rural Community: Caregivers' and Women's Perspectives.

Mentors Offering Maternal Support (M-O-M-S™) is an intervention to reduce prenatal anxiety among vulnerable women. The aim of this study was to determine its applicability to support pregnant women living in Louisiana's rural Bayou Region after Hurricane Ida. Post-disaster interviews with 22 perinatal/community care providers and 20 pregnant/postpartum women were evaluated using qualitative analysis. Maternal health caregivers described the mental health needs of women using specific themes: (1) Caring for women vulnerable before the disaster, (2) Disaster affects everybody's mental health, (3

Community and health provider perspectives on the quality of family planning and contraceptive services in Kabwe District, Zambia.

Quality family planning and contraceptive (FP/C) services result in positive outcomes such as client satisfaction and sustained use of contraceptives. While most assessments of quality in FP/C services are based on measurable reproductive health outcomes, there is limited consideration of the perspectives and experiences of health providers and community members. This study aimed to address this knowledge gap, by exploring health providers' and community perspectives on the elements of quality FP/C services in Kabwe district, Zambia. Fourteen focus group discussions and 10 in-depth interviews

Enhancing Access to Family Planning Services in Uganda Through Community Health Extension Workers: Protocol for a Pilot Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: In Uganda, 22% of all women of reproductive age have an unmet need for family planning services. Access to contraceptive services, especially long-term reversible contraceptives such as implants, remains a challenge. The number of trained health providers is also not sufficient to address the needs for contraception. The Uganda Ministry of Health implemented a community-based implant provision pilot project where community health extension workers (CHEWs) were trained and accredited to insert implants at community level. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the implementation an
