Pakistan's community health workers.

Pakistan's health characteristics are worse than those of other Asian countries at similar stages of development. Its mortality rate for children under five is 139 per 1,000, and its maternal mortality is 60 per 10,000. Malnutrition in women and children is widespread; 50 per cent of children under five are stunted. Pakistan's population growth rate of 3.1 per cent per year is among the highest in Asia. The high population growth rate and poor health status of many people call for extensive health care services, but, unfortunately, health services do not reach most of the people of Pakistan. P

Involving Community Health Workers as Evaluation Leaders in a National Community Health Worker Initiative.

The community health workers (CHWs) for COVID Response and Resilient Communities initiative further established CHWs as a critical public health workforce through substantial investment in CHW-led activities. The initiative supported CHWs at 67 sites nationwide to mitigate the most severe consequences of COVID-19 among vulnerable populations while strengthening community capacity to address future public health threats in the United States. It also created opportunities for CHWs to serve as leaders in evaluating their own profession. Based on a review of the literature regarding CHW involvemen

Community health workers: examining the Helper Therapy principle.

A community approach to the integration of health and social services for low-income pregnant women is being addressed through Community Integrated Service System (CISS) initiatives of the Maternal Child Health Bureau. This particular CISS program model was designed to enable low-income mothers to function in a Community Health Worker (CHW) role providing social support for at-risk pregnant women. Using Riessman's notion of "helper therapy," the model was also developed to enhance the potential for CHWs to gain helper benefits. The purpose of this exploratory study was to describe perceived he

Promoting Hispanic Immigrant Health via Community Health Workers and Motivational Interviewing.

Hispanic immigrant health disparities are among the highest in the nation, especially related to obesity and access to health services. Healthy Fit (En Forma Saludable) is a health promotion program that leverages public health department infrastructure to address these disparities through the use of three key innovations explored in this article: community health workers (CHWs), motivational interviewing (MI), and vouchers for free preventative health services. CHWs trained in MI conduct a health screening and then distribute preventive service vouchers and health resources as needed based on

Diagnosis and management of dysentery by community health workers.

To develop guidelines for community health workers in the treatment of patients with diarrhoea, diarrhoea prevalence was actively surveyed for a year in a remote rural community of 915,000 persons, and the enteric pathogens and clinical features associated with diarrhoeal illness were determined in a sample of 300 patients. Bloody diarrhoea accounted for 39% of all diarrhoea episodes and 62% of diarrhoea-associated deaths. 51 (50%) of 101 patients with a history of bloody diarrhoea had Shigella infection, compared with 31 (16%) of 199 patients with other types of diarrhoea. A history of bloody

Community Health Workers as Support for Sickle Cell Care.

Community health workers are increasingly recognized as useful for improving health care and health outcomes for a variety of chronic conditions. Community health workers can provide social support, navigation of health systems and resources, and lay counseling. Social and cultural alignment of community health workers with the population they serve is an important aspect of community health worker intervention. Although community health worker interventions have been shown to improve patient-centered outcomes in underserved communities, these interventions have not been evaluated with sickle

Training community health workers: factors that influence mammography use.

The purpose of this study was to assess factors that influence mammography use among volunteer community health workers (CHWs). Data trends indicate lower mammography rates among minority and low-income women. Although CHW interventions have been shown to promote mammography use among this population, training strategies and the use of a comprehensive needs assessment are lacking. Using a cross-sectional study design, data were collected via a mailed survey. The dependent variable was mammography use within the past 2 years. The independent variables were categorized according to the factors i

Improving local health through community health workers in Cambodia: challenges and solutions.

BACKGROUND: Volunteer community health workers (CHWs) are an important link between the public health system and the community. The 'Community Participation Policy for Health' in Cambodia identifies CHWs as key to local health promotion and as a critical link between district health centres and the community. However, research on the challenges CHWs face and identifying what is required to optimise their performance is limited in the Cambodian context. This research explores the views of CHWs in rural Cambodia, on the challenges they face when implementing health initiatives. METHODS: Qualita
