OBJECTIVES: People with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PWH) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) with viral load (VL) suppression eliminate the risk of sexual transmission. Many factors including decreased ART adherence and medication access barriers decrease the success of treatment as an HIV prevention strategy. ART access may be enhanced with specialty pharmacy services (SPS), but the impact compared with community-based practices is variably reported. This study aimed to compare the impact of specialty vs community pharmacies on medication adherence via VL assessment.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacists in the UK currently provide limited travel medicine services. An enhanced service could offer the traveling public general advice, provision of immunizations, and malaria prophylaxis. The assessment of need for a travel vaccine service from community pharmacies is key to the decision to develop the service.
METHOD: The needs assessment used a questionnaire survey of potential travelers recruited from community pharmacies and the regional travel clinic.
RESULTS: In total, 151 completed questionnaires were received (response rate 40%); nearly three times as ma

Differentiated service delivery is recommended to improve the uptake of HIV testing and treatment for people living with HIV. One service delivery option yet to be fully capitalised on is community pharmacies. There are approximately 3,580 registered community pharmacies in South Africa. A total of 1,110 (31%) of these pharmacies are corporate chain pharmacies located in cities and towns, the remainder are individually owned, many of which are in less populated poorer settings. Community pharmacies traditionally play a pivotal role in providing health education to the populations they serve an

BACKGROUND: Requests for supply of the emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) through community pharmacies require consideration of a range of factors and the application of professional judgment. Pharmacists should therefore be able to follow a structured reasoning process.
OBJECTIVES: The research involved an assessment of history taking and counseling by pharmacy staff through mystery patient emergency contraception product requests.
METHODS: Two challenging ECP request case scenarios were developed with assessment tools. Mystery patients were trained to present the scenarios to pharmacies. A

BACKGROUND: Recognition is growing of the contributions community pharmacists make to the primary health care team, as their role shifts from a traditional dispensing focus to greater emphasis on fully applying their clinical skills. Some extended pharmacist services (e.g., vaccinations) are becoming increasingly common in New Zealand (Aotearoa). Community pharmacies provided key services during the COVID-19 response.
METHODS: An online survey was sent to community and intern pharmacists in 2022, regarding delivery of extended services and enablers and barriers to service provision, to look a

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies in many countries around the world provide healthcare services for patients. Pharmacists trained as medication experts provide a wide range of patient care services related to medication therapy, patient education, disease prevention, and health promotion. Professional training, expertise, and skills qualify pharmacists to engage in health screenings. These screening programs performed by community pharmacists can help to identify risk factors, facilitate early detection of common diseases, and assist physicians with making effective diagnoses.

Pharmacists can offer a variety of medication and consulting services to elderly people living in the community and in assisted living facilities. Such services may include reviewing drug therapy regimens to ensure that medications are appropriate, effective, and safe for a specific patient; determining whether a sign, symptom, syndrome, or decline in function is medication-related; and identifying medications that may cause or aggravate common geriatric problems. Pharmacists providing "senior care" services talk with patients and caregivers to pinpoint medication issues, work closely with nur

BACKGROUND: Depression is the most common mental ill health condition, and its prevalence is increasing. Despite this, its treatment is variable often due to a lack of capacity within healthcare systems to support this vulnerable population. Community pharmacy staff could offer additional support. This systematic review identifies depression services led by community pharmacy staff, their service components, outcomes, and barriers/facilitators to their implementation.
METHODS: Four bibliographic databases were searched (Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL) from 2000 onwards. Title/abstract

OBJECTIVES: To examine consultation room use, services delivered, and use of clinical records in New Zealand (NZ) community pharmacies.
METHODS: Community pharmacies were surveyed. Analysis included descriptive statistics, Fisher exact tests, t-tests, and ANOVA.
KEY FINDINGS: Of 104 responses (42% response rate), 92.2% had consultation room/s, used on average eight times per day. Most respondents wanted to improve their consultation room. Micro-credentialled services usually used consultation rooms, but some sensitive services often did not, and use of external clinical records was low.

BACKGROUND: In Japan, patients can freely choose medical facilities. Many visit different medical facilities for different diseases, and for convenience, often utilize the pharmacies neighboring these facilities. Accordingly, a "My Pharmacy" model was recommended, in which patients select a single pharmacy using their own judgement to receive proper medication services. A "My Pharmacist" model, in which the pharmacist is constantly involved in the treatment of a patient, was also proposed. However, patients' evaluations of pharmacist/pharmacy services under these models have not been investiga

In 2016, NHS Lothian regional sexual and reproductive health services introduced an electronic pharmacy treatment voucher that could be sent to the mobile phones of patients with Chlamydia trachomatis and their sexual contacts. A retrospective audit of the electronic treatment voucher database was conducted for vouchers issued between April and December 2016. Five hundred and forty-nine vouchers were issued and 56% were redeemed at a pharmacy within one week of issue. This suggests that electronic vouchers are a popular and effective means of providing expedited treatment for uncomplicated C.

OBJECTIVES: The UK 5 year antimicrobial resistance strategy recognizes the role of point-of-care diagnostics to identify where antimicrobials are required, as well as to assess the appropriateness of the diagnosis and treatment. A sore throat test-and-treat service was introduced in 35 community pharmacies across two localities in England during 2014-15.
METHODS: Trained pharmacy staff assessed patients presenting with a sore throat using the Centor scoring system and patients meeting three or all four of the criteria were offered a throat swab test for Streptococcus pyogenes, Lancefield grou

BACKGROUND: Pharmacy has experienced both incomplete professionalization and deprofessionalization. Since the late 1970s, a concerted attempt has been made to re-professionalize pharmacy in the United Kingdom (UK) through role extension-a key feature of which has been a drive for greater pharmacy involvement in public health. However, the continual corporatization of the UK community pharmacy sector may reduce the professional autonomy of pharmacists and may threaten to constrain attempts at reprofessionalization.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the research: to examine the public health activi
