Governing through community allegiance: a qualitative examination of peer research in community-based participatory research.

The disappointing results of many public health interventions have been attributed in part to the lack of meaningful community engagement in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of these initiatives. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) has emerged as an alternative research paradigm that directly involves community members in all aspects of the research process. Their involvement is often said to be an empowering experience that builds capacity. In this paper, we interrogate these assumptions, drawing on interview data from a qualitative study investigating the experiences of

Empowering community partners in health disparities research: Refining a community-based participatory research (CBPR) training curriculum.

The adoption of Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approaches has increased due to its potential to reduce health disparities through Community-Academic Partnerships (CAP). Providing community members (CM) capacity-building opportunities is a way of empowering communities and promoting social change. To support the development of CAPs, the Community Training Institute for Health Disparities (CTIHD) was created in southern Puerto Rico to capacitate community leaders in the CBPR approach and basic research knowledge through the CTIHD-Community Research Program (CRP). In 2019, six syll

Community health workers support community-based participatory research ethics: lessons learned along the research-to-practice-to-community continuum.

Ethical principles of community-based participatory research (CBPR)--specifically, community engagement, mutual learning, action-reflection, and commitment to sustainability--stem from the work of Kurt Lewin and Paulo Freire. These are particularly relevant in cancer disparities research because vulnerable populations are often construed to be powerless, supposedly benefiting from programs over which they have no control. The long history of exploiting minority individuals and communities for research purposes (the U.S. Public Health Service Tuskegee Syphilis Study being the most notorious) ha

Improving post-hospital care for people who are homeless: Community-based participatory research to community-based action.

This article discusses how community-based participatory research (CBPR) on hospital care transitions in New Haven, Connecticut led to the development of a new medical respite program to better serve patients who are homeless. Key insights include: • Homelessness is an important driver of hospital utilization and must be addressed in efforts to decrease hospital readmissions. • Hospitals and community organizations often serve a shared patient/client base and can work together to develop innovative programs that are beneficial to all parties. • Community-based participatory research methods ar

A feminist community-based participatory action research approach to advance climate justice.

The purpose of this research is to develop and pilot a feminist informed community based participatory action research approach (f-CBPAR) to examine injustice. CBPAR is a collaborative approach between researchers and community members throughout the research process. F-CBPAR draws on both feminist theory and CBPAR literatures to identify power arrangements that contribute to environmental injustice. Using a f-CBPAR case study approach of primary interview data and descriptive secondary data, this exploratory study identifies climate threats of concern to a rural, farmworker community in Calif

Promoting environmental justice through community-based participatory research: the role of community and partnership capacity.

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) increasingly is being used to study and address environmental justice. This article presents the results of a cross-site case study of four CBPR partnerships in the United States that researched environmental health problems and worked to educate legislators and promote relevant public policy. The authors focus on community and partnership capacity within and across sites, using as a theoretical framework Goodman and his colleagues' dimensions of community capacity, as these were tailored to environmental health by Freudenberg, and as further modif

Community Members' Perspectives on Men's Risk and Protective Health Factors: A Community-Based Participatory Research Study.

Despite men's health playing a significant role in the well-being of infants, children, and women, there is a gap in maternal and child health research which more broadly considers men's health as a component of family's and community's overall well-being and for the sake of men's own health and well-being, particularly from the perspective of men with marginalized identities, such as Black men, and community members. Therefore, our community-based participatory research study aimed to explore what community members perceive as protective and risk factors for the general health of men in a low

Community-Based Participatory Research Approach for Social Media Health Promotion and Youth Engagement.

Social media is crucial for health promotion in Philadelphia, where youth face high rates of teen births and STIs. Proud Teens of Philly (PTOP), linked to Temple University's Center for Asian Health, uses its Youth Advisory Board (YAB) to engage 13-18-year-olds in outreach and content creation on Instagram and YouTube Shorts. The YAB's eight members educate peers on consent, relationships, and STI prevention. A qualitative survey rated the CBPR approach highly, scoring 4.66 out of 5. We emphasized inclusive, interactive content. Establishing privacy protocols remains essential.

Identifying homeless population needs in the Emergency Department using Community-Based Participatory Research.

BACKGROUND: Annually 1.5 million Americans face housing insecurity, and compared to their domiciled counterparts are three times more likely to utilize the Emergency Department (ED). Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) methods have been employed in underserved populations, but use in the ED has been limited. We employed CBPR in an urban American hospital with a primary goal of improved linkage to care, reduced ED recidivism, and improved homeless health care. METHODS: A needs analysis was performed using semi-structured individual interviews with participants experiencing homelessne

Engaging people with lived experience on community advisory boards in community-based participatory research: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is a collaborative research process which engages researchers and community members as equals during all phases of a research project. This approach promotes social change and enhances the practical relevance of the research. One key tool in CBPR is the community advisory board (CAB), where individuals with lived experience and community organizations are integrated into the research process and align research with community priorities. This scoping review: (1) explores best practices for effective recruitment and engagement of people w

Using Community-Based Participatory Research Strategies in Age-Friendly Communities to Solve Mobility Challenges.

The number of older adults is steadily increasing in the United States and across the globe. Aging is linked to an increased risk of disability. Disabilities that limit one or more major life activities such as seeing, hearing, walking, and motor skills impact a person's ability to drive a car. Low utilization of alternative transportation by older adults and people with disabilities may put them at risk for social isolation. Social isolation is associated with a variety of negative health outcomes. While communities are challenged to create available, acceptable, accessible, adaptable and aff

Understanding dementia in Filipino Americans: risk factors, research gaps, and the role of community-based participatory research.

Filipino Americans are the third-largest Asian American, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) group in the United States. Previous studies showed that they have high incident rates of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) compared to other AANHPI groups. However, they are often aggregated into the "Asian" category in AD/ADRD research, masking distinct risk and mitigating factors. To date, no studies have directly explored AD/ADRD factors in Filipino Americans, a community that has unique characteristics from life experiences, immigration, historical and cultural contex
