Lifetime panic-depression comorbidity in the National Comorbidity Survey.

BACKGROUND: The National Comorbidity Survey is a nationally representative survey of the prevalences and correlates of DSM-III-R disorders in the US household population. METHODS: Retrospective age-at-onset reports were used to study predictive relationships between lifetime panic and depression. RESULTS: Strong associations were found between the lifetime prevalences of panic and major depressive episodes (odds ratios: for panic attacks with depression, 6.2; for panic disorder with depression, 6.8). These associations were not significantly influenced by the inclusion or exclusion of respon

[Comorbidity in migraine].

Migraine is a common and often disabling disease with a prominent genetic basis. There are many comorbidities associated with migraine which have been identified as risk factors for progression to chronic migraine. Each of these has its own genetic load and shares some common characteristics with migraine. The identification of migraine comorbidities may help clarify common underlying genetic and biological mechanisms of diseases. The treatment of migraine should involve a multifaceted approach, aimed at identifying and reducing possible risk and comorbidity factors. This may prevent the evolu

[Comorbidity in psoriasis].

Psoriasis is a systemic chronic inflammatory disease associated with comorbidity. Many epidemiological studies have shown that psoriasis is associated with psoriatic arthritis as well as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Furthermore, obesity and psychological diseases such as depression and anxiety disorders are linked with psoriasis and play a central role in its management. The association of psoriasis and its comorbidity can be partly explained by genetic and pathophysiological mechanisms. Approximately 40 psoriasis susceptibility loci have been described with the majority linked to th

Comorbidity of migraine.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Comorbidity refers to the greater than coincidental association of separate conditions in the same individuals. Historically, a number of conditions have been noted to be comorbid with migraine, notably psychiatric disorders (anxiety, depression, panic disorder), epilepsy, asthma, and some congenital heart defects. Migraine sufferers have increased medical costs overall compared with others of the same sex and age, even after considering the cost of specific migraine treatment. Thus, estimates of the burden of migraine often include the costs of conditions comorbid with it.

Comorbidity in panic disorder: II. Chronology of appearance and pathogenic comorbidity.

Ages of onset and the sequence of appearance of panic disorder (PD) and comorbid conditions were determined in a sample of 54 patients with the principal DSM-III-R diagnosis of PD. The onset of PD was earlier in patients with moderate to severe agoraphobia (AG) than in panic patients without AG. Patients with alcohol abuse and drug abuse before the onset of PD also had a tendency to develop PD earlier, which suggests that these conditions might have specifically predisposed to PD. All comorbid disorders, except for major depression, were more likely to precede the onset of PD so that, more oft

Comorbidity between persistent reading and mathematics disabilities: The nature of comorbidity.

The current study aimed at investigating the comorbidity between reading disability (RD) and mathematical disability (MD) in a non-alphabetic language context. Over 1,900 Chinese first graders were screened on their reading and mathematics achievement twice. Children who scored consistently below the 10th percentile in reading and/or mathematics were identified as RD and/or MD respectively. A subsample of these children, together with a group of typically-achieving children, were further assessed on their cognitive capacities. Results suggested that while there were cognitive deficits that wer

Comorbidity and disease burden in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R).

BACKGROUND: Disease burden estimates rarely consider comorbidity. Using a recently developed methodology for integrating information about comorbidity into disease burden estimates, we examined the comparative burdens of nine mental and 10 chronic physical disorders in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R). METHODS: Face-to-face interviews in a national household sample (n = 5,692) assessed associations of disorders with scores on a visual analog scale (VAS) of perceived health. Multiple regression analysis with interactions for comorbidity was used to estimate these association

Comorbidity in polymyalgia rheumatica.

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is the commonest inflammatory rheumatic disease affecting older people. The current mainstay of treatment is long-term oral glucocorticoid therapy. Management of these patients in clinical practice is often complicated by the presence of comorbidity. Comorbidity might be due to shared risk factors such as age, sex, or genetic background; to the presence of the disease itself; or to adverse effects of glucocorticoid therapy. Cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis/fracture, metabolic and ocular comorbidity are of particular interest to clinicians because of their relat

Comorbidity in Dupuytren disease.

In this report, a possible association between Dupuytren's disease (DD) and other health problems was investigated. The health problems included in this study are : cardiac ischemia, hypertension, hyper-lipidemia, diabetes mellitus, epilepsy, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, malignancy, asthma and COPD. The data of 725 patients with DD were collected from -Intego, a database including all morbidity presented to the General Practitioners (GPs) in Flanders. The control group of 2900 age and sex matched non-DD patients was selected from the same database. A possible influence of severity of DD was eva

[Comorbidity in infertile couples].

Pregnancy is the result of a series of highly complex processes, which can be deranged by multiple disturbances on many different levels. Physicians are increasingly dealing with couples suffering from infertility. This rise in case numbers is mainly due to the fact that couples are more and more delaying childbearing until a later phase of their reproductive life, when their social and professional careers are established. The increasing mean age at the first birth has a negative impact on fertility by deteriorating quality and reducing the quantity of oocytes. With increasing age systemic di

[Migraine and psychosomatic comorbidity].

As a common neurological disorder (10-15% of the population), migraine is associated with numerous comorbidities, particularly other pain syndromes, mental illnesses and functional disorders. These 'psychosomatic' comorbidities increase with migraine severity. Severely affected, comorbid patients also often have a poorer response to specific migraine therapy. Interestingly, migraine and the comorbidities mentioned have a number of common aetiological or facilitating factors, e.g. genetic factors, and show a higher incidence in women and in people with previous traumatic experiences, as well as

Atopic Dermatitis and Comorbidity.

Atopic dermatitis is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disease. It is often the first indicator of allergic diseases, and a certain percentage of patients are affected by allergic rhinitis and/or asthma as a consequence. The study aimed to investigate the link between atopic dermatitis and comorbidity in family medicine. In the specialist family medicine practice Osijek, a retrospective study was conducted in the period from January 1, 2016 to July 1, 2017 on the percentage of patients with atopic dermatitis in the total number of patients, and their comorbid diseases. The data source

Comorbidity management in spondyloarthritis.

Comorbidities are defined as coexistent clinical disorders that appear as a consequence of persistent inflammatory activity and/or treatment. Comorbidities in spondyloarthritis (SpA) are frequent, contributing to a poorer quality of life, higher mortality and incremented healthcare costs. Several recommendations for the screening and management of these comorbidities have been developed in recent years with the aim of improving the different outcomes in these patients. Osteoporosis is the most prevalent comorbidity in patients with SpA, mainly caused by systemic inflammation and a lack of mobi

Depression and cardiovascular comorbidity.

Depression has long had a popular link to cardiovascular disease and death. However, only during the last 15 years has scientific evidence supporting this common wisdom been available. Beginning in the early 1990s, there began to accumulate community-based epidemiological evidence that medically healthy, depressed patients followed for long periods of time were at increased risk of both cardiovascular disease and cardiac death. In the mid-1990s, evidence appeared to indicate that depression following a heart attack increased the risk of death. It is now apparent that depression aggravates the
