[A survey of filariasis in the Comoro Islands, in Great Comoro and Mohéli].

The filariasis of W. bancrofti with nocturnal periodicity is, together with malaria, the principal endemic disease in the Comoros Islands. Well studied on Mayotte island, which remained a French Territorial Collectivity, its prevalence and distribution are less known in the Grand Comoros, Anjouan and Moheli islands which form the Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros. The study of the nocturnal microfilariae in the Grand Comoros and Moheli in 1987 is the opportunity to assess the situation of the disease on this archipelago.

Maternal Education, Fertility, and Child Survival in Comoros.

Reduction in child mortality is a demographic progress of significant socioeconomic development relevance in Africa. This paper analyzed the effect of maternal education and fertility on child survival in the Islands of Comoros. The 2012 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data were used. A two-stage probit regression method was used for data analysis. The results showed that about 75% of the children's mothers had given birth to between one and five children, while more than half did not have any form of formal education. The results of the two-stage probit regression showed that while child

Management of childhood fractures in Anjouan Island, Comoros.

Limb fractures were reviewed in 489 children, 390 boys and 99 girls whose ages ranged between 2 days and 14 years (mean 8 yrs). Only 54 (11%) were caused by road traffic accidents; 435 (89%) were due to other causes. Fractures of the arm were seen in 332 (68%) children and there were leg fractures in 157 (32%), of which 155 (32%) were undisplaced and were treated by first aid. Closed reduction was performed on 138 (28%) children and 196 (40%) were treated by internal fixation. Infection and non-union occurred in 28 (14%) and 13 (7%), respectively. Re-operation was performed because of complica

[Heath history and health challenges in the Union of Comoros in 2012].

Located in the Mozambican Channel in the southwestern Indian Ocean, near Africa, the islands that form the Union of the Comoros present, despite improved health and social progress, epidemiological features still dominated by communicable diseases, primarily malaria, diarrheal diseases, respiratory diseases, and gastrointestinal parasites. The archipelago is the regional gateway to vectorborne diseases, such as malaria and arboviruses, and to cholera. The prevalence of AIDS is 0.025%. The Union is facing a major upsurge in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases. Natural hazards (cyclones,

Enterovirus meningitis in Mayotte French Comoros Island, March-June 2019.

BACKGROUND: Enteroviruses (EV) are the most frequent cause of acute meningitis worldwide, and regularly responsible for outbreaks. Human parechoviruses (PeV) are associated with sepsis and meningitis in young infants. In Mayotte, a French department located in the Comoros archipelago, EVs and PeVs are not part of the routine screening of cerebrospinal fluids (CSFs) of patients with meningitis. Consequently, no data is available on EV or PeV epidemiology. AIM: Assess the need for EV and PeV diagnosis in Mayotte. METHODS: CSFs collected between March and June 2019 from patients addressed to Ma

[2007 cholera epidemic in Comoros islands: a step towards endemisation?].

In 2007, a cholera epidemic occurred on two of the three islands of the Comoros archipelago: Grande Comore and Moheli. This study is based on data from the files of the 1571 patients admitted to five cholera treatment centers (CTC). The outbreak lasted for ten months. A dramatic peak was observed in July and August corresponding to the traditional wedding season during which hundreds of guests including returning diaspora gather to celebrate "Grand Marriages". Initial stool cultures identified Vibrio cholerae O1, Ogawa serotype. The in-center fatality rate was 1.85%. Poor socio-economical cond

Control of malaria in the Comoro Islands over the past century.

BACKGROUND: The Comoros are an archipelago located in the Indian Ocean between the eastern coasts of Africa and north of Madagascar. Malaria transmission appeared late in the 19th century due to the intensification of human migration. The story of malaria transmission for the past century is depicted to provide useful lessons for the future. Currently, malaria transmission occurs differently on each island; thus, control strategies must be adapted for each particular island. Tentative malaria control in Comoros has a long history of success and failure. This study reviews the data available as

[Actinomycetoma of the knee due to Nocardia otitidiscaviarum described in the Comoro Islands].

BACKGROUND: Mycetoma is a chronic skin and soft tissue infection encountered in the dry tropical regions and are caused by fungi (eumycetoma) or bacteria (actinomycetoma). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 25-year-old man consulted at the hospital on Mayotte Island for a left knee injury sustained 10 years earlier in a motorcycle accident with broken skin occurring in Anjouan in the Comoro Islands. Clinical and histological diagnosis of mycetoma was made, and in the absence of microbiological diagnosis, empirical antifungal therapy was initiated. Given the poor outcome, new biopsies were performed and

RAB23 mutation in a large family from Comoros Islands with Carpenter syndrome.

We report here on a RAB23 mutation (c.86dupA) present in the homozygote state in four relatives of Comorian origin with Carpenter syndrome. All children presented with acrocephaly and polysyndactyly. However, intrafamilial variability was observed with variable severity of craniosynostosis ranging from cloverleaf skull to predominant involvement of the metopic ridge. All children also presented with a combination of brachydactyly with agenesis of the middle phalanges, syndactyly, broad thumbs, and postaxial polydactyly (2/4) in the hands, and preaxial polydactyly (3) and syndactyly (4) in the

Anopheles mascarensis, a Malaria Vector Endemic to Madagascar and the Comoros Archipelago: A Review.

Anopheles mascarensis (An. mascarensis; De Meillon, 1947) is a mosquito species endemic to Madagascar and the Comoros Archipelago. In the past, it was confused with Anopheles marshalli (Theobald, 1929), a continental African species that does not exist in Madagascar. Malaria transmission is highly heterogeneous in Madagascar. Principal and secondary mosquito vectors, as well as malaria parasite species, may vary from one region to another. Anopheles mascarensis has been identified as the main vector of malaria in the east and southeast of Madagascar, while it plays the role of a secondary vect

[Malaria in the Comoros Archipelago in 2015: status after 15 years of fight].

The four volcanic islands of the Comoros archipelago are an area of intense, stable and permanent malaria transmission, almost exclusively with Plasmodium falciparum. Our purpose is to describe the current situation on malaria in Mayotte and Comoros in 2015, after the implementation of various strategies of control during the past 15 years. In 2015, Mayotte is in the phase of elimination of malaria. In the three islands forming the Union of Comoros, the transmission is much lower in the islands of Anjouan (incidence of 0.02‰) and Moheli (incidence of 0.14‰), ranking the two islands in pre-elim

First molecular detection of Rickettsia africae in ticks from the Union of the Comoros.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia africae is the agent of African tick bite fever, a disease transmitted by ticks in sub-Saharan Africa. In Union of the Comoros, a recent study reported the presence of a Rickettsia africae vector but no information has been provided on the circulation of the pathogenic agent in this country. METHODS: To evaluate the possible circulation of Rickettsia spp. in Comorian cattle, genomic DNA was extracted from 512 ticks collected either in the Union of the Comoros or from animals imported from Tanzania and subsequently tested for Rickettsia infection by quantitative PCR. The Indian Ocean paradox revisited: HIV and sexually transmitted infections in the Comoros.

The combination of high sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevalence and low HIV prevalence has been described as the Indian Ocean paradox. To investigate current epidemiology of HIV and STI in the Comoros, we conducted cross-sectional surveys of a representative sample of the adult population, and convenience samples of female sex workers and male STI patients. Only one (0.025%) of 3990 community participants was HIV-infected, while 142 (3.6%) had treponemal antibodies. Treponemal antibodies were not associated with past genital ulcers, number of sexual partners or adverse outcomes of preg
