Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a rare and severe thrombotic microangiopathy caused by genetic or acquired abnormalities leading to activation of the complement alternative pathway on cell surfaces. Interferon alpha contains a sequence motif similar to the complement receptor type two (CR2/CD21) binding site on complement fragment C3d. Circulating immune complexes (CIC) and the complement breakdown product C3d were measured in 81 patients with glomerulonephritis (GN), 28 patients with early and 25 patients with long-term renal transplants. C3b and C3d complement receptors on the surface of mononuclear cells from blood, lymph nodes, and spleens were investigated in twenty-nine CLL patients and in eight patients with non-Hodgkin malignant lymphoma.
