Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition characterized by intense pain, usually in a body region that has experienced trauma, and autonomic and inflammatory features. It most commonly develops after an arm or leg injury. Patients typically present with extreme hyperalgesia and/or allodynia. The Budapest Criteria are used to make this clinical diagnosis. Prompt diagnosis and aggressive management are critical because long-term outcomes are improved when treatment is initiated soon after symptom onset. The primary management options are rehabilitation and physical therap

This report aims to present an orderly approach to the treatment of Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) types I and II through an algorithm. The central theme is functional restoration: a coordinated but progressive approach that introduces each of the treatment modalities needed to achieve both remission and rehabilitation. Reaching objective and measurable rehabilitation goals is an essential element. Specific exercise therapy to reestablish function after musculoskeletal injury is central to this functional restoration. Its application to CRPS is more contingent on varying rates of progre

Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome, previously known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy, has garnered increased attention in recent years. Many recent studies have attempted to better describe the etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of symptoms. Despite recent advances to the fund of medical knowledge, the underlying pathophysiology and mechanisms involved in disease progression remain unclear. This review will synthesize and present current theories and data regarding the role of inflammatory cytokines and other mediators in both the central and peripheral nervous systems that contribute to the de

Early diagnosis is a prerequisite for a successful treatment of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). In order to describe neurological symptoms which characterize CRPS, we evaluated 145 patients prospectively. Two-thirds of these were women, the mean age at time of investigation was 50.4 years. CRPS followed limb trauma, surgery and nerve lesion. Employing the current IASP criteria 122 patients were classified as CRPS I and 23 as CRPS II. All patients were assessed clinically pain was quantified using the McGill pain questionnaire, skin temperature was measured by an infrared thermometer and

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition typically involving a limb, which is characterized by neuropathic pain, sensory abnormalities and neurovascular findings. The exact cause of CRPS is unknown; however, proposed theories include alterations in the sympathetic and central nervous system (CNS), small fibre changes in the peripheral nervous system and psychological factors. Although this condition was previously considered rare among children and adolescents, it has been increasingly recognized in paediatric patients and can result in significant d

Since the term "complex regional pain syndromes" (CRPS) was introduced based on a revised taxonomy for disorders previously called reflex sympathetic dystrophy and causalgia in 1995, much knowledge grew up on the understanding and therapy of the disease. This review gives an overview on the clinical characteristics, pathophysiology, diagnostic tools and therapeutic options in CRPS. It will especially focus on recent findings on the role of the sympathetic nervous system, the central nervous system and peripheral inflammatory processes as underlying mechanisms. Although there is no diagnostic g

Complex regional pain syndrome is a clinical entity that usually occurs following trauma, surgery, or other triggering event. Patients complain of pain described as burning, associated with sensory, vasomotor, sudomotor, motor and/or trophic disorders. The pain appears disproportionate to the initial lesion. The diagnosis is purely clinical and based on the Budapest criteria. It is a diagnosis of exclusion. The pathophysiology is still poorly understood and is thought to be multifactorial. Several mechanisms have been described: an inflammatory state, an overactivation of the sympathetic auton

Complex regional pain syndrome is a chronic pain condition characterized by autonomic and inflammatory features. It occurs acutely in about 7% of patients who have limb fractures, limb surgery, or other injuries. Many cases resolve within the first year, with a smaller subset progressing to the chronic form. This transition is often paralleled by a change from "warm complex regional pain syndrome," with inflammatory characteristics dominant, to "cold complex regional pain syndrome" in which autonomic features dominate. Multiple peripheral and central mechanisms seem to be involved, the relativ

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a heterogeneous disorder that falls in the spectrum of neuropathic pain disorders. It is maintained by abnormalities throughout the neuraxis (the peripheral, autonomic, and central nervous systems). The pathophysiology of CRPS is not fully known. There are no scientifically well-established treatments. The diagnostic criteria for CRPS at this time are purely clinical, and the use of diagnostic tests has not been demonstrated. The most appropriate management of CRPS uses a multidisciplinary approach, with the inclusion of medical and psychologic interven

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a progressive, chronic illness that is enigmatic because the mechanisms for its pathogenesis have yet to be determined. Syndromes synonymous with CRPS are reflex sympathetic dystrophy, reflex neurovascular dystrophy, causalgia, algoneurodystrophy, sympathetically maintained pain, clenched fist syndrome, and Sudek's syndrome. The diagnosis of CRPS is categorized into three stages: acute, dystrophic, and atrophic. CRPS is most often precipitated by peripheral trauma (crushing injuries, lacerations, fractures, sprains, burns, or surgery) to soft tissue or

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a rare, chronic pain disorder. It is challenging for patients and physicians because it leads to significant morbidity due to chronic pain that may last for years. CRPS typically develops four to six weeks after direct trauma, such as an injury or surgery, and causes pain that is out of proportion to the inciting injury. It is associated with multiple physiologic mechanisms, affecting skin texture or localized sensory, motor, sudomotor, and vasomotor pathways. The diagnosis is made clinically using standardized diagnostic criteria. Ancillary testing is

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) represents a state of constant and often disabling pain, affecting one region (usually hand) and often occurs after a trauma whose severity does not correlate with the level of pain. The older term for this condition of chronic pain associated with motor and autonomic symptoms is reflex sympathetic dystrophy or causalgia. The aim of this review, based on contemporary literature, is to show the epidemiology and etiology, proposed pathophysiological mechanisms, method of diagnosis and treatment options, prevention and mitigation of this under-recognized dise

A previously well fifty-five year-old female household helper developed complex regional pain syndrome Type II (reflex sympathetic dystrophy) following a minor injury to her left hand. She had marked hyperaesthesia and allodynia and was unable to perform her household work and to participate in the required physiotherapy. Following a series of stellate ganglion block, neurostimulation as well as physical therapy, there was a dramatic improvement in her condition and she was able to return to normal function.

Complex regional pain syndrome is a chronic pain syndrome that is often instigated by postoperative or post-traumatic events. The disease process can progress through three stages, the first of which tends to respond best to treatment. A review of the literature is presented, followed by a report of a patient who developed symptoms of complex regional pain syndrome following a water-skiing accident.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) encompasses a wide range of painful conditions, but it is characterised by continuing (spontaneous and/or evoked) limb pain that is seemingly disproportionate in time or degree to the usual course of any known trauma or other lesion. The pain is regional, with distal predominance usually but not related to a specific nerve territory or dermatome, and it is usually associated with abnormal sensory, motor, sudomotor, vasomotor and/or trophic findings. The complexity of the aetiopathogenetic factors making up the clinical picture of CRPS is mirrored by the in

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic neuropathic pain condition that is often overlooked by clinicians and typically occurs within an entire limb. There is considerable clinical variability in presentation among patients with CRPS. We report a case of extremely focal CRPS localized to the left small finger (LSF) following crush injury. A 48-year-old right-handed male presented with LSF stiffness and severe pain of three months' duration following crush injury. He endorsed severe allodynia and minimal flexion at the proximal interphalangeal and distal interphalangeal joints of the

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a debilitating poorly understood condition with unpredictable course and heterogeneous therapeutic responses. Early, coordinated multidisciplinary management, including psychological and psychiatric support, is essential. In severe, therapy-resistant CRPS (long-standing CRPS), particularly intractable infection or severe recurrent wounds, amputation may be considered as a last-resort intervention after thorough multidisciplinary assessment and failure of conservative or less invasive strategies. Amputation rarely results in pain resolution, as CRPS may

INTRODUCTION: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a clinical disorder that can develop following surgery or trauma. Based on the most prominent underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, CRPS can be classified into different subtypes, namely inflammatory, nociplastic/neuropathic, vasomotor, and motor. Depending on the subtype, personalized treatment can be applied. If conservative treatments are insufficient or ineffective, more invasive treatments may be recommended. This article provides an overview of the most recent insights into CRPS and discusses the most common invasive treatments.

OBJECTIVE: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is associated with a range of sensory disturbances on the symptomatic side of the body but whether this includes olfaction is uncertain. To clarify this, the aims of this study were to compare ratings of intensity and hedonic appeal of household odorants in CRPS patients and controls, and to determine whether ratings differed between the symptomatic and contralateral sides within the sample of patients.
METHODS: Six odorants (vanilla, fish sauce, vinegar, eucalyptus, almond essence and acetone) were presented sequentially in random order on cot

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic, disabling condition with prolonged or excessive pain persisting in a limb usually following a triggering injury or trauma to an extremity. The subjective expression of pain is disproportionate to what would be objectively expected from the initial injury. It may also be accompanied by a variety of autonomic disturbances and trophic abnormalities such as swelling in the affected area and changes in skin color and temperature. Understanding the pathophysiology of CRPS remains a medical challenge, along with making the diagnosis and devising an
