Compressed Air Alone Versus Ethanol Plus Compressed Air for Terminal Drying of Digestive Endoscopes:A Randomized Controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: Ethanol flushing is commonly used during terminal drying of digestive endoscopes, but its impact on residual protein removal remains unclear. This study compared compressed air drying alone with ethanol plus compressed air drying during endoscope reprocessing. METHODS: In this prospective randomized comparative study, 900 digestive endoscope reprocessing cycles were allocated 1:1 to ethanol plus compressed air drying or compressed air drying alone. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), microbial culture outcomes, and protein residue were assessed. RESULTS: A total of 874 cycles were anal

Bilateral orbital emphysema from compressed air injury.

PURPOSE: To describe a patient who developed bilateral subconjunctival and orbital emphysema after an automobile tire explosion. METHOD: Case report. RESULTS: A 60-year-old man sustained bilateral ocular injury after a tire explosion. Ophthalmic examination disclosed bilateral subconjunctival air, with no visible conjunctival laceration. Computed tomography showed orbital emphysema, with no evidence of orbital fracture. Follow-up examination 2 weeks after the injury disclosed resolution of the subconjunctival air. Best-corrected visual acuity in the right eye was decreased after the explosio

Traumatic optic atrophy caused by compressed air.

A six-year-old boy who developed optic atrophy after an injury with the inner tube stem of a truck tire is described. The air stem penetrated the inferonasal portion of the left orbit and discharged air. The patient presented for evaluation within one hour and had no light perception in the involved eye. Computed tomography of the orbit revealed multiple small air bubbles surrounding the optic nerve sheath without direct optic nerve edema. It is postulated that the etiology of optic atrophy is related to the air surrounding the optic nerve, which interrupted its vascular supply. Proper coverin

Rupture of sigmoid colon caused by compressed air.

Compressed air has been generally used since the beginning of the 20(th) century for various applications. However, rupture of the colon caused by compressed air is uncommon. We report a case of pneumatic rupture of the sigmoid colon. The patient was admitted to the emergency room complaining of abdominal pain and distention. His colleague triggered a compressed air nozzle against his anus as a practical joke 2 h previously. On arrival, his pulse rate was 126 beats/min, respiratory rate was 42 breaths/min and blood pressure was 86/54 mmHg. Physical examination revealed peritoneal irritation an

[Health check on divers and compressed air workers].

We have conducted the health check of 3,554 compressed air workers and 1,821 divers, and also examined the incidence and severity of aseptic bone necrosis by using Roentgen pictures. We could classify 4,859 of 5,375 persons into four groups (A-D), based on our classification. We could also classify 4,205 of 5,375 persons that had had a bone X ray examination on the basis of the criteria described by Ota and Matsunaga (A-C). 4,859 persons belonged to four groups: class A (persons who can work, no limitations): 4,099 (84.4%), class B (persons who can work under conditions below 1.0 kg/cm2): 357

Colorectal barotrauma following compressed air spray to the perineum.

Colorectal injuries caused by high-pressure air compressors are rare and reported especially among industrial workers. They may appear because of intended or accidental injury. In the present paper, we report a case of colorectal injuries due to air insufflation from a distance towards the anus with the clothes on, as a means of a practical joke. The patient presented one day after the trauma to the Emergency Department with complaints of severe abdominal pain and vomiting. On examination, he had signs of peritonitis. A computed tomography (CT) scan did not show any perforation. Emergency lapa

Pneumatic Colorectal Injury Caused by High Pressure Compressed Air.

The pneumatic colorectal injury caused by high pressure compressed air are rare and can be fatal. Herein, we present a case of 45-year-old male who developed sudden onset of severe abdominal pain after cleaning the dust on his pants with high pressure compressed air gun dust cleaner. Emergent exploratory laparotomy was done which findings are a huge rectal perforation with multiple serosal and subserosal tear in sigmoid to splenic flexure of colon. Anterior resection with left hemicolectomy, and temporary transverse colostomy was performed. Postoperative course was uneventful. Recently, progno

Orbital compressed air and petroleum injury mimicking necrotizing fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: Orbital injury secondary to petroleum-based products is rare. We report the first case, to our knowledge, of a combined compressed air and chemical orbital injury, which mimicked necrotizing fasciitis. CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old man was repairing his motorcycle engine when a piston inadvertently fired, discharging compressed air and petroleum-based carburetor cleaner into his left eye. He developed surgical emphysema, skin necrosis, and a chemical cellulitis, causing an orbital compartment syndrome. He was treated initially with antibiotics and subsequently with intravenous steroi

Expiratory flow limitation in compressed air divers and oxygen divers.

Divers are exposed to dense gases under hyperbaric and hyperoxic conditions and, therefore, may be at risk of developing respiratory disease. Long-term effects on respiratory function have been found in commercial divers who perform deep dives. This study was conducted to detect possible lung function changes in scuba divers who dive in shallow water using compressed air or oxygen as a breathing gas. A cross-sectional sample of 180 healthy male divers (152 air divers and 28 oxygen divers) and 34 healthy male controls underwent a diving medical examination including body plethysmography, diffus

Occupational health surveillance of compressed air workers: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Compressed air is increasingly used in the underground construction of caissons and tunnels. New risks have been identified, suggesting the need to develop counter-measures. AIMS: This scoping review aimed to provide insight into the health risks, prevention and surveillance measures, and adverse health effects related to compressed air work during tunnel construction. METHODS: Health risks were assessed based on the Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewers' Manual, the recommendations of Pollock and the PRISMA Scoping Reviews Checklist. The scoping review mapped and analysed studies of

A Case of Pneumatic Rectal Perforation Caused by Compressed Air.

Rectal perforation is a rare cause of acute abdomen. The most common cause of rectal perforation is trauma. Barotrauma due to the injection of compressed air in the rectum is an extremely rare cause of rectal perforation. We report a case of extensive pneumoperitoneum with abdominal compartment syndrome caused by rectal perforation secondary to the forceful injection of compressed air through the perineum. The patient was successfully managed by immediate relief of abdominal compartment syndrome by needle decompression followed by surgical repair of rectal perforation.

Accidental fatal lung injury by compressed air: a case report.

Compressed air is being used extensively as a source of energy at industries and in daily life. A variety of fatal injuries are caused by improper and ignorant use of compressed air equipments. Many types of injuries due to compressed air are reported in the literature such as colorectal injury, orbital injury, surgical emphysema, and so on. Most of these injuries are accidental in nature. It is documented that 40 pounds per square inch pressure causes fatal injuries to the ear, eyes, lungs, stomach, and intestine. Openings of body are vulnerable to injuries by compressed air. Death due to com

Colorectal injury by compressed air--a report of 2 cases.

We report two colorectal trauma patients whose rectosigmoid region was ruptured due to a jet of compressed air directed to their anus while they were playing practical jokes with their colleagues in their place of work. It was difficult to diagnose in one patient due to vague symptoms and signs and due to being stunned by a stroke of the compressed air. Both patients suffered from abdominal pain and distension, tension pneumoperitoneum and mild respiratory alkalosis. One patient was treated with primary two layer closure, and the other with primary two layer closure and sigmoid loop colostomy.

Transconjunctival orbital emphysema caused by compressed air injury: a case report.

Orbital emphysema following conjunctival tear in the absence of orbital wall fracture, caused by air under pressure is rare. Usually orbital emphysema is seen in facial trauma associated with damage to the adjacent paranasal sinuses or facial bones. To the best of our knowledge, there have been only eight reports of orbital emphysema following use of compressed air during industrial work. The air under pressure is pushed through the subconjunctival space into the subcutaneous and retrobulbar spaces. We present here a rare cause of orbital emphysema in a young man working with compressed air gu

Arterial gas embolism breathing compressed air in 1.2 metres of water.

Arterial gas embolism (AGE) may result when diving while breathing compressed gas and ascending rapidly or with a closed glottis. Pulmonary over-pressurisation can result in lung stretch injury with entry of bubbles into the pulmonary venous circulation and subsequently the systemic arterial circulation. We present the case of an individual who suffered AGE while breathing compressed air at 1.2 metres' fresh water (mfw) in a swimming pool and discuss the factors determining the depth at which this form of injury may occur. This case serves to underscore the fact that risk of AGE exists at shal
