A novel simulation algorithm for soft tissue compression.

This paper presents a novel general approach to simulation of soft tissue compression. A theoretical framework of the compression algorithm has been developed and implemented, based on the concept of a simple spring. The volume subjected to compression is divided into a number of "model elements", each one consisting of 27 nodes. The nodes are connected with springs. The mechanical properties of the tissues are assumed to be linear and isotropic. The compressed volume remains constant due to the introduced concept of spring variable equilibrium lengths. Initial settings for compression simulat

Vascular compression of the airway: establishing a functional diagnostic algorithm.

IMPORTANCE: Pediatric imaging carries the risk of radiation exposure. Children frequently undergo computed tomography with angiography (CTA) for findings on bronchoscopy with limited knowledge regarding the necessity of such imaging. OBJECTIVE: To report our experience with all pediatric patients at our institution over an 8-year period with airway symptoms warranting bronchoscopy followed by CTA for potential vascular anomaly. Goals were to report the percentage of positive findings seen on CTA leading to surgery; discuss relative radiation exposure risk and sedation risk for additional radi

Using the STRIDE algorithm for compression selection in upper-body lymphoedema.

This second iteration of STRIDE is an evidence-based algorithm for compression selection, extended to cover the upper limb, trunk and breast. The STRIDE algorithm is patient-centred and complexity-informed, encompassing the site, shape and size of oedematous swelling; impact of tissue texture on textile types; 24-hour refill patterns; patient-specific issues; pressure dosage among other textile characteristics; and oedema etiology and staging. This article details the elements of the STRIDE algorithm and presents practical tools for its application.

Algorithmically compressed data and the topological conjecture for the inner-core electrons.

Eight different properties of three classes of compounds, metal halides, halomethanes, and chlorofluorocarbons, have been modeled with the aim to check the validity of the odd complete graph conjecture suggested for encoding the contribution of the inner-core electrons to the molecular connectivity indices. Modeling using this conjecture is compared with modeling using connectivity indices derived by other well-known algorithms. The conjecture of odd complete graph for the inner-core electrons achieves to improve the modeling quality of the molecular connectivity indices and/or of the molecula

Case studies of the STRIDE algorithm for compression selection in upper-body lymphoedema.

This article presents six case studies demonstrating use of the STRIDE algorithm for selecting compression garments for upper-body lymphoedema. STRIDE offers a structured, evidence-informed and individualised approach to assessment and selection. It incorporates patients' multifactorial and evolving needs, as well as textile properties beyond pressure dosage alone to enhance long-term management and overall quality of life.

Delphi study on the STRIDE algorithm for compression selection in upper-body lymphoedema.

BACKGROUND: The original STRIDE algorithm covered lower-limb lymphoedema but not the upper body. AIMS: To update the STRIDE algorithm for compression selection to treat lymphoedema of the upper limb, breast and trunk by achieving consensus on the definitions and importance of its six aspects. METHOD: Using a modified Delphi framework, clinical experts in the field ranked agreement and gave open-ended feedback over two rounds of surveys, with a >70% threshold for agreement. RESULTS: In the first round, participants represented five continents (n=36). Characteristics that met the threshold co

Synchronized Chest Compressions for Pseudo-PEA: Proof of Concept and a Synching Algorithm.

Objective: The two objectives of this report are: first, to describe a comparison of chest compressions unsynchronized or synchronized to native cardiac activity in a porcine model of hypotension, and second, to develop an algorithm to provide synchronized chest compressions throughout a range of native heart rates likely to be encountered when treating PEA cardiac arrest. Methods: We adapted our previously developed signal-guided CPR system to provide compressions synchronized to native electrical activity in a porcine model of hypotension as a surrogate of PEA arrest. We describe the first c

Lateral compression type 1 (LC1) pelvic ring injuries: a spectrum of fracture types and treatment algorithms.

Lateral compression type 1 (LC1) fractures are the commonest pelvic ring injury. However, they represent a heterogenous spectrum of injury mechanisms and fracture patterns, resulting in a lack of strong evidence for a universally agreed treatment algorithm. Although consensus exists that LC1 fractures have a preserved posterior ligamentous complex and are vertically stable, controversy persists around defining internal rotational instability. As such, treatment strategies extend from routine non-operative management through to dynamic imaging such as examination under anaesthetic (EUA) or stre

Compression for Lower Extremity Venous Disease and Lymphedema (CLEVDAL): Update of the VLU Algorithm.

The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses (WOCN) Society charged a task force with updating the venous leg ulcer (VLU) algorithm to include the addition of lymphedema with the new title of "Compression for Lower Extremity Venous Disease and Lymphedema (CLEVDAL)." As part of the process, the task force was charged to develop consensus-based statements to serve as clinical guidance related to CLEVDAL. The 3-member task force assisted by a moderator completed a scoping literature review to identify recommendations supported by research to qualify as evidence-based and to identify areas where guidan

Resolution evaluation of MR images reconstructed by iterative thresholding algorithms for compressed sensing.

PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance imaging systems usually feature linear and shift-invariant (stationary) transform characteristics. The point spread function or equivalently the modulation transfer function may thus be used for an objective quality assessment of imaging modalities. The recently introduced theory of compressed sensing, however, incorporates nonlinear and nonstationary reconstruction algorithms into the magnetic resonance imaging process which prohibits the usage of the classical point spread function and therefore the according evaluation. METHODS: In this work, a local point sprea

Comparison of compressed sensing reconstruction algorithms for 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging.

Phosphorus MR spectroscopy and spectroscopic imaging (31P-MRS/MRSI) provide information about energy metabolism, membrane degradation and pH in vivo. In spite of their proven utility, 31P-MRS/MRSI are not often used primarily because of the challenges imposed by the low sensitivity and low concentration of metabolites leading to low signal to noise ratio (SNR), coarse spatial resolution and prolonged acquisition time. More recently there has been considerable interest in compressed sensing as an acceleration method for MR signal acquisition. This approach takes advantage of the intrinsic spars

Development of a Machine-Learning Algorithm to Identify Cauda Equina Compression on Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scans.

OBJECTIVE: Cauda equina syndrome (CES) poses significant neurological risks if untreated. Diagnosis relies on clinical and radiological features. As the symptoms are often nonspecific and common, the diagnosis is usually made after a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. A huge number of MRI scans are done to exclude CES but nearly 80% of them will not have CES. This study aimed to develop and validate a machine-learning model for automated CES detection from MRI scans to enable faster triage of patients presenting with CES like clinical features. METHODS: MRI scans from suspected CES patien

Opportunistic CT Screening-Machine Learning Algorithm Identifies Majority of Vertebral Compression Fractures: A Cohort Study.

Vertebral compression fractures (VCF) are common in patients older than 50 years but are often undiagnosed. Zebra Medical Imaging developed a VCF detection algorithm, with machine learning, to detect VCFs from CT images of the chest and/or abdomen/pelvis. In this study, we evaluated the diagnostic performance of the algorithm in identifying VCF. We conducted a blinded validation study to estimate the operating characteristics of the algorithm in identifying VCFs using previously completed CT scans from 1200 women and men aged 50 years and older at a tertiary-care center. Each scan was independ

Chest Compressions in Pediatric Patients With Continuous-Flow Ventricular Assist Devices: Case Series and Proposed Algorithm.

Patients with continuous flow ventricular assist devices (CF-VAD's) in the systemic ventricle (left ventricle or single ventricle) often have no palpable pulses, unreliable pulse oximetry waveforms and non-pulsatile arterial waveforms despite hemodynamic stability. When circulatory decompensation occurs, standard indicators to begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) which are used in other pediatric patients (i.e., significant bradycardia or loss of pulse) cannot be applied in the same fashion. In this population, there may already be pulselessness and development of bradycardia in and of it

Chronic abdominal syndrome due to nervous compression. Study of 100 cases and proposed diagnostic-therapeutic algorithm.

OBJECTIVE: In the medical literature, thoracic disc protrusion has traditionally been considered a rare occurrence. We hypothesise that the incidence of such protrusions and their abdominal symptoms is higher than is generally believed and that their presence may account for a significant proportion of chronic non-visceral abdominal pains. Accordingly, the present study was designed to identify and quantify the symptoms experienced by patients with thoracic disc protrusion and to assess the relative risk of these symptoms being presented, compared to the general population. DESIGN: We conduct
