Silica-filled methacrylic composites with extremely high compressive strength.

SYLOID® 244 has never been applied as a filler in composites with potential dental application. Therefore, the aim of research was to apply this silica in its unmodified and diazonium salt-modified forms in different mass ratios as fillers in light-cured methacrylic composites. The effectiveness of modification process was confirmed with the use of Raman spectroscopy. Methacrylic composites with the modified and unmodified SYLOID® 244, as well as unfilled resin as a control group were prepared. Their basic physicochemical properties, such as depth of cure, mass stability during incubation in s

Influence of vertical trabeculae on the compressive strength of the human vertebra.

Vertebral strength, a key etiologic factor of osteoporotic fracture, may be affected by the relative amount of vertically oriented trabeculae. To better understand this issue, we performed experimental compression testing, high-resolution micro-computed tomography (µCT), and micro-finite-element analysis on 16 elderly human thoracic ninth (T(9)) whole vertebral bodies (ages 77.5 ± 10.1 years). Individual trabeculae segmentation of the µCT images was used to classify the trabeculae by their orientation. We found that the bone volume fraction (BV/TV) of just the vertical trabeculae accounted for

Ultrasonic parameters and relationship between compressive strength, microstructure of gall bladder stones.

Patients with symptomatic stones are at a great risk for complications and these complications are a major cause of morbidity. The gall bladder stones may have a complex structure and variable composition. In the present investigation stones have been grouped into three categories namely cholesterol, bilirubinate and mixed, and a correlation between the surface structure, ultrasonic parameters and compressive strength is estimated. A double-probe through-transmission technique was used for the ultrasonic parameters study, a universal testing instrument for hardness and a scanning electron micr

Compressive deformability and flexural fracture energy of high-strength concrete with bamboo fibers.

Knowledge of the behavior of high-strength concrete reinforced with bamboo fibers remains limited with respect to compressive deformability and flexural fracture energy. The effect of alkali-treated bamboo fibers (1.0% and 1.5% by weight of cement; 2% NaOH) on the fresh-mix properties, mechanical performance, compressive deformability, and flexural fracture energy of high-strength concrete was evaluated. The addition of fibers increased the air content and reduced the consistency of the mix. The compressive strength changed by + 4% and - 6%, while the strain corresponding to peak stress increa

Predicting the Uniaxial Compressive Strength of Cement Paste: A Theoretical and Experimental Study.

This study presents a progressive strength prediction model for cement paste based on the hypothesis that compressive strength is governed by the microstructural compactness of hydration products. A three-stage modeling framework was developed: (1) a semi-empirical model for pure cement paste incorporating water-to-cement ratio and paste density; (2) a density-corrected effective water-cement ratio w/ceff that accounts for the physical effects of mineral additives including fly ash, slag, and limestone powder; and (3) a hydration-informed strength model incorporating curing age and temperature

The effect of compressive loading rate on annulus fibrosus strength following endplate fracture.

Intervertebral disc degeneration poses a considerable healthcare challenge, although the process is not well understood. Endplate fracture marks severe biomechanical compromise in a segment and may be correlated with degeneration of the disc. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the relationship between endplate fracture velocity and damage to the annulus fibrosus. Following overnight-thawing, 27 frozen porcine cervical spines were dissected into motion segments (vertebra-disc-vertebra) and compressed until fracture at one of three loading rates (fast=15 mm/s, medium=1.5 mm/s, and

Effect of mineralogical composition on the compressive strength and microstructure of metakaolin geopolymer.

The objective of this work is to investigate the impact of mineralogical composition (SiO2 and Al2O3 content) on the properties of metakaolin-based geopolymers, including compressive strength and microstructure. Two kaolin samples with different mineralogical compositions were used: one has higher Al2O3 and lower SiO2 content (coded as kH), compared to the second one, which is coded as kL. Post calcination at 700 °C for 1 h, the pozzolanic activity of both metakaolin samples was measured by the Chapelle test. The metakaolin samples (MkH and MkL) were activated with NaOH and Na2SiO3 to produce

Effect of fitting adjustments on compressive strength of a new foil crown system.

The effect of die spacing and precementation internal adjustments on the compressive strength of a new ceramic foil crown system was examined in vitro. Twenty-four ceramic foil crowns were made for identical stylized master dies made of polycarbonate filled with 30 wt% carbon. One half of the stone working dies were coated with die spacer and the remaining were left untreated. A special foil used for these crowns was adapted to the working dies under 2500 psi loading. A sculpturing device was used to standardize the size and shape of the ceramic foil crowns. Only crowns made on dies coated wit

Fixation strength of four headless compression screws.

To promote a quicker return to function, an increasing number of patients are treated with headless screws for acute displaced and even non-displaced scaphoid fractures. Therefore, it is imperative to understand and optimize the biomechanical characteristics of different implants to support the demands of early mobilization. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical fixation strength of 4 headless compression screws under distracting and bending forces. The Acutrak Standard, Acutrak Mini, Synthes 3.0, and Herbert-Whipple screws were tested using a polyurethane foam scaphoid

Investigating and Evaluating Novel Fly Ash-Based Proppant Compressive Strength Under Various Environmental Conditions.

As hydraulic fracturing becomes increasingly prevalent in the oil and gas industry, there is a growing need to develop more cost-effective and sustainable technologies, particularly concerning the materials used. Proppants play a vital role in hydraulic fracturing by ensuring that fractures remain conductive and can withstand the pressure exerted by the surrounding strata. One key parameter for evaluating proppants is their compressive strength, especially under harsh environmental conditions. High-strength proppants, such as those made from ceramics or bauxite, are typically expensive due to

Superior compressive strength of a calcaneal fracture construct augmented with remodelable cancellous bone cement.

Twenty-six paired, fresh-frozen cadaveric feet were disarticulated at the ankle joint, and the dome of the talus was potted. Stress-risers were placed along the medial, lateral, and posterior aspects of the calcaneus, and the specimen was loaded rapidly to failure in a testing machine to produce a type-IIB displaced intra-articular fracture according to the classification system of Sanders et al. One specimen of each pair was treated with standard internal fixation with bone-grafting (the control group), and the other was treated with similar fixation but with SRS (Skeletal Repair System) calc

Mechanical behavior of the human lumbar spine. II. Fatigue strength during dynamic compressive loading.

Seventeen cadaveric human lumbar motion segments from eight spines were cyclically loaded in vitro under axial compression. Loading frequency and magnitude were chosen to simulate rigorous activity within an in vivo physiological level. The load magnitude was determined as a percentage of the ultimate compressive load, the latter estimated from the bone mineral content (BMC) of lumbar vertebrae determined by dual-photon absorptiometry. Following testing, the degree of macroscopic disc degeneration was assessed and the type of fracture in each specimen was determined from serial sagittal sectio

Estimation of compressive strength of ultra-high performance lightweight concrete (UHPLC) using neural network.

High strength and lightweight are key trends in concrete development. Achieving a balance between these properties to produce high structural efficiency (strength-to-weight ratio) concrete is challenging due to the complex relationship between compressive strength and material components. In this study, two artificial neural network (ANN) models-the BP and Elman networks were used to predict the compressive strength of ultra-high-performance lightweight concrete (UHPLC), based on a robust database of 115 test datasets from previous studies. The investigated parameters included the cement grade

Regional Variability in Compressive Strength of the Cartilaginous Nasal Septum: Implications for Fracture Patterns.

INTRODUCTION: Septal trauma is caused by compressive forces. Defining regional variability in compressive strength (CS) may reveal areas of weakness in the septum that are more prone to fracture. The objective of this study is to determine the CS at multiple locations within the cartilaginous septum and assess if variations in strength correlate with known patterns of septal fracture. METHODS: Nineteen nasal septal quadrangular cartilages were dissected from fresh human anatomic specimens. Septa were divided into 11 sections using known anatomical and relative points. Each septum was cut into
