Relationship between obsessive-compulsive personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

This study investigated the presence of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) in a group of 277 patients (88 with obsessive-compulsive disorder [OCD], 58 with major depressive disorder [MDD], and 131 with panic disorder [Panic]) to test the specificity of the relationship between OCPD and OCD. OCPD is statistically significantly more frequent in patients with OCD than in those with Panic and MDD. The distribution of single criteria of OCPD in the three groups does not differ significantly. Discriminant analysis selects a list of items that provide a correct classification rate of 66

Personality features of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The authors evaluated personality dysfunction in 23 patients with primary obsessive-compulsive disorder and an age- and sex-matched group of patients with major depressive disorder. There were no significant differences between the two patient groups with respect to mean personality trait scores or the frequency or type of personality disorder diagnosis. A mixed personality disorder with avoidant, dependent, and passive-aggressive features was most commonly observed in the obsessive-compulsive group. There was a very low frequency of schizoid or compulsive personality disorder.

Personality disorders in obsessive compulsive disorder.

Standardized structured interview personality scales are now available that provide better reliability than clinician interview, but are still imperfect. These scales diagnose DSM III-R personality disorders, which are more illness-oriented than Freudian notions. Use of these scales has found that the majority of patients with OCD have at least one Axis II personality disorder, with most falling in cluster C. Obsessive compulsive personality disorder, as described in DSM-III-R, is, in most samples studied, present in the minority of patients with OCD, and is often less common than other person

Obsessive compulsive disorder and obsessive compulsive personality disorder and the criminal law.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental illness that has penetrated public consciousness. However, the extent to which OCD and obsessive compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) can constitute debilitating conditions that adversely affect most aspects of a person's functioning and quality of life are not so well known, including as to how they can impair the capacity to give reasoned consideration to conduct options and the consequences of choices. Little scholarship exists about the legal repercussions of OCD and OCPD and, in particular, their potential relevance for both assessments of

Personality disorder in obsessive compulsive disorder: a controlled study.

In order to assess Axis II pathology in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder patients as compared to other anxiety disorder patients, the Personality Disorder Examination was administered to 258 anxiety disorder patients. In contrast to a number of recent reports, a low rate of personality disorder diagnoses were found in the OCD sample as well as the anxiety disorder control subjects. The findings of the current investigation are discussed in terms of state-trait confounding.

Psychic euosmia and obsessive compulsive personality disorder.

Patients with obsessive compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) often refer to a prompt mood improvement upon encountering good scents in general, or fresh laundry borax on their clothes, pillows or home settings. The Authors propose the new term psychic euosmia in the mean of an overstated psychological predisposition for a real pleasant smell that elicits an immediate sense of pleasure, order and calm. The prompt reactions to a pleasant odor might be explained by the involvement of rhinencephalon and its proximity to mood-related limbic circuits, which bypass the cognitive awareness. Cleanlin

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder With Co-Occurring Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder: A Practice Focused Review.

This review article addresses the frequently noted comorbidity between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). We begin by reviewing the recent empirical literature on the co-occurrence of these two conditions and the functional consequences of comorbid OCPD on OCD. We describe theoretical conceptualizations of the links between these disorders, including shared mechanisms that may drive the association between these two distinct conditions. We then provide an overview of diagnostic measures for OCPD and differential diagnosis. We also review d

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder co-occurring with obsessive-compulsive disorder: Conceptual and clinical implications.

OBJECTIVES: There are ongoing uncertainties in the relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). This study aimed to test the proposition that OCPD may be a marker of severity of OCD by comparing groups of OCD individuals with and without OCPD on a number of variables. METHOD: A total of 148 adults with a principal diagnosis of OCD were administered the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview, Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, Sheehan Disability Scale, Vancouver Obsessional Compulsive Inventory and Symptom Checklist 9

Clinical characteristics of obsessive-compulsive disorder comorbid with obsessive -compulsive personality disorder: subtype implications.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by persistent obsessions and compulsions that lead to significant distress and functional impairment. Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) frequently co-occurs in individuals with OCD and has been identified in several studies as the most prevalent personality disorder within this population. However, the clinical relevance of this comorbidity remains uncertain, particularly in terms of whether it reflects a distinct OCD subtype characterized by specific onset patterns and symptom dimensions. The alternative model of personality disorder is inadequate for capturing obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

The alternative model of personality disorder (AMPD) included in Section III of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) reconceptualized personality pathology in terms of pathological traits and impairments in functioning. For example, the construct of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) was reconceptualized via the traits of rigid perfectionism as well as at least 2 of perseveration, intimacy avoidance, and restricted affectivity. We review the literature to summarize how effectively the legacy construct of OCPD is captured by the AMPD. We

Phenomenological overlap of multiple personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Three patients with multiple personality disorder and three with obsessive-compulsive disorder were compared on a variety of self-report measures and on two structured interviews. Amytal Sodium interviews had been conducted on the obsessive patients; alter personality-like entities claiming responsibility for the obsessions and compulsions were contacted in two patients. The one obsessive patient with no alter personality differed markedly from the other five on the SCL-90, the Lynfield Inventory, and the Dissociative Experiences Scale. Structured interviews with the Anxiety Disorders Intervie

Personality dimensions in pathological gambling disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

This study was conducted to investigate the similarities and differences in the personality dimensions of patients with pathological gambling disorder (PGD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Thirty-three subjects with PGD, 41 with OCD and 40 normal controls were assessed with the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ), which assesses three personality dimensions: novelty seeking, reward dependence, and harm avoidance. Compared with OCD subjects, PGD subjects expressed significantly greater novelty seeking, impulsiveness, and extravagance. The PGD subjects also reported significa

Intolerance of uncertainty and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) remains understudied despite its high community prevalence and substantial societal burden. Elucidating the factors involved in OCPD traits and behaviors could improve conceptual models of OCPD and guide treatment development. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) has been investigated as a transdiagnostic factor linked to many conditions, including anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Despite OCPD's links to OCD, very little research has investigated whether IU may also be a relevant factor in OCPD. The present study administere

Promising experimental drugs for obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a common psychopathological condition that generally causes a significant maladjustment in affected individuals. Despite its prevalence, there are no univocal and defined guidelines for the treatment of this condition, and the literature evidence on this topic is scant and controversial. AREAS COVERED: This narrative review synthesizes clinical trials, case reports, and experimental proposals for OCPD treatment in the light of the most recent neurobiological models. We aimed to review current therapeutic evidence for the disord

DSM-III compulsive personality disorder: an epidemiological survey.

A two-stage probability sample of community subjects was developed with a full psychiatric examination employing DSM-III criteria in conjunction with the Epidemiological Catchment Area (ECA) survey conducted in Baltimore, MD. This report details the observation on those subjects diagnosed with compulsive personality disorder and compulsive personality traits. The results indicate that this condition has a prevalence of 1.7% in a general population. Male, white, married and employed individuals receive this diagnosis most often. Our data suggest a dimensional rather than categorical character f

The association between obsessive compulsive disorder and obsessive compulsive personality disorder: prevalence and clinical presentation.

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) has been the subject of interest for some time due to the historical assumption that OCPD causes OCD. This study systematically examined the association between OCD and OCPD in terms of prevalence and clinical presentation. The specificity of the association between OCD and OCPD was investigated relative to another axis I anxiety disorder (Panic disorder). DESIGN AND METHOD: Data for this study were drawn from measures taken at initial assessment at a specialist treatm

Seven-year stability of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder symptom criteria in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) commonly co-occurs with personality disorders, particularly obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). Recent research suggests that personality disorders, especially OCPD, might not be as stable as once thought. The current study investigates the longitudinal stability of OCPD diagnosis and individual symptom criteria in individuals with OCD. Around 320 participants with a primary diagnosis of OCD were included in the study, with diagnostic assessments conducted annually for 7 years. Logistic mixed-effects models were conducted to examine the relatio

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder in rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a common prodromic non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). Only few studies have evaluated the personality of RBD patients with conflicting results. Aim of the study was to evaluate the frequency of Personality Disorders (PeDs)in RBD. RBD patients, PD patients and healthy controls (HC) were enrolled. All the enrolled subjects underwent a full neurological examination. Motor symptoms were evaluated with the UPDRS-Motor Examination. PeDs were assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Personality Disorders (SCID-II). Twen

The role of personality disorders in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Personality disorders are a common comorbidity in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The effect of comorbidity on the symptom presentation, course, and treatment outcome of OCD is being discussed here. OCD and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) though similar in their symptom presentation, are distinct constructs. Schizotypal disorder, OCPD, and two or more comorbid personality disorders have been found to be consistently associated with a poor course of illness and treatment response. Further research is needed to determine treatment strategies to handle the personality pathol
