Computer-aided heuristics in orthodontics.

INTRODUCTION: During the decision-making process, physicians rely on heuristics that consist of simple, useful procedures for solving problems, intuitive shortcuts that produce reliable decisions based on limited information. In clinical situations characterized by a high degree of uncertainty such as those encountered in orthodontics, cognitive biases and judgment errors related to heuristics are not uncommon. This study aimed at promoting trust in the effective interface between the intuitive reasoning of the orthodontic practitioner and the computational heuristics emerging from simple stat

A Few-Channel Brain-Computer Interface System Based on a Heuristic Algorithm.

Traditional P300 brain-computer interface (BCI) systems rely on multi-channel EEG acquisition, causing cumbersome setup, lengthy preparation, and high user workloads, which limits their real-world application. To enhance practicality, this paper proposes a fixed few-channel selection framework based on a heuristic algorithm to balance decoding performance and user experience. We integrated a genetic algorithm (GA) with Bayesian linear discriminant analysis (BLDA) to identify a strongly generalizable few-channel combination from a traditional eight-channel system, avoiding costly subject-specif

Accelerating Computation of Stable Merge Tree Edit Distances Using Parameterized Heuristics.

In this paper, we present a novel heuristic algorithm for the stable but NP-complete deformation-based edit distance on merge trees. Our key contribution is the introduction of a user-controlled look-ahead parameter that allows to trade off accuracy and computational cost. We achieve a fixed parameter tractable running time that is polynomial in the size of the input but exponential in the look-ahead value. This extension unlocks the potential of the deformation-based edit distance in handling saddle swaps, while maintaining feasible computation times. Experimental results demonstrate the comp

Implementation of a computational medical assemblage heuristic to improve rational design of phytomedicines for safety, efficacy and regulatory approval.

Phytomedicines are key to global healthcare and underutilized in Western medical systems. The inherent complexity of multi-species polypharmaceutical formulations presents barriers (standardization, reproducibility and regulatory approval) that can relegate potentially safe, effective and lower cost medication to nutraceutical settings in countries such as the US. The identification of Minimal Essential Effective Formulations (MEEFs) is a strategy to rationally simplify phytomedicines while preserving efficacy, but it requires computational innovation to de-risk and prioritize compounds due to

An Advance Computing Numerical Heuristic of Nonlinear SIR Dengue Fever System Using the Morlet Wavelet Kernel.

This study is associated to solve the nonlinear SIR dengue fever system using a computational methodology by operating the neural networks based on the designed Morlet wavelet (MWNNs), global scheme as genetic algorithm (GA), and rapid local search scheme as interior-point algorithm (IPA), i.e., GA-IPA. The optimization of fitness function based on MWNNs is performed for solving the nonlinear SIR dengue fever system. This MWNNs-based fitness function is accessible using the differential system and initial conditions of the nonlinear SIR dengue fever system. The designed procedures based on the

A steady state micro genetic algorithm for hyper-heuristic generation in one-dimensional bin packing.

The one-dimensional bin packing problem (1DBPP) is a well-known NP-hard problem in computer science and operations research that involves many real-world applications. Its primary objective is to allocate items into bins while minimizing the number of bins used. Due to the complexity of the problem, exact algorithms are often impractical for large instances, which has led to a reliance on tailored heuristics that may perform well on some instances but poorly on others. In this study, we propose a method to automatically generate selection hyper-heuristics (HHs), which are then applied to solve

Application of Deep Reinforcement Learning Algorithm in Uncertain Logistics Transportation Scheduling.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Nowadays, finding the optimal route for vehicles through online vehicle path planning is one of the main problems that the logistics industry needs to solve. Due to the uncertainty of the transportation system, especially the last-mile delivery problem of small packages in uncertain logistics transportation, the calculation of logistics vehicle routing planning becomes more complex than before. Most of the existing solutions are less applied to new technologies such as machine learning, and most of them use a heuristic algorithm. This kind of solution not only needs to set a lot of constraints

Premature conclusions in the diagnosis of iron-deficiency anemia: cause and effect.

Case records of patients with iron-deficiency anemia were audited using a computer-based algorithm. In 24 of 35 cases, the diagnostic conclusion seemed unjustified and characteristic of premature closure, one of four recurring errors in diagnostic reasoning described previously. Premature closure appeared to originate from subjects at all levels of training, to be easily and unquestioningly accepted by other physicians, and to inappropriately condition diagnostic and therapeutic decisions. Heuristics and biases described by Tversky and Kahneman are considered as contributory factors and patien

A novel metaheuristic optimizer GPSed via artificial intelligence for reliable economic dispatch.

Recently, meta-heuristic optimization algorithms have enhanced resource efficiency, facilitated informed decision-making, and addressed complex problems involving multiple variables and constraints in engineering and science fields. However, numerous handicaps are reported on the performance of a quite number of these optimizers, such as local solution trapping, slow convergence and the requirements for elevated storage and computation capability. This article proposes a novel, simple, and elaborate remedy for the reported deficiencies of meta-heuristic optimizers. This deficiency is accomplis

From recognition to decisions: extending and testing recognition-based models for multialternative inference.

The recognition heuristic is a noncompensatory strategy for inferring which of two alternatives, one recognized and the other not, scores higher on a criterion. According to it, such inferences are based solely on recognition. We generalize this heuristic to tasks with multiple alternatives, proposing a model of how people identify the consideration sets from which they make their final decisions. In doing so, we address concerns about the heuristic's adequacy as a model of behavior: Past experiments have led several authors to conclude that there is no evidence for a noncompensatory use of re

Endoshare: a publicly available, surgeons-friendly solution to de-identify and manage surgical videos.

BACKGROUND: Video-based assessment and surgical data science can advance surgical training, research, and quality improvement. However, widespread use of surgical videos is limited by heterogeneous recording formats and privacy concerns associated with sharing potentially sensitive data. The work presents the development, implementation, evaluation, and public release of Endoshare, a surgeon-friendly application that merges, standardizes, and de-identifies endoscopic videos. METHODS: Development followed the first four phases of the software development life cycle (analysis, design, implement

Metaheuristics optimization-based ensemble of deep neural networks for Mpox disease detection.

The rising number of cases of human Mpox has emerged as a major global concern due to the daily increase of cases in several countries. The disease presents various skin symptoms in infected individuals, making it crucial to promptly identify and isolate them to prevent widespread community transmission. Rapid determination and isolation of infected individuals are therefore essential to curb the spread of the disease. Most research in the detection of Mpox disease has utilized convolutional neural network (CNN) models and ensemble methods. However, to the best of our knowledge, none have util

A new approach for bin packing problem using knowledge reuse and improved heuristic.

The two-dimensional (2D) irregular packing problem is a combinatorial optimization problem with NP-complete characteristics, which is common in the production process of clothing, ships, and plate metals. The classic packing solution is a hybrid algorithm based on heuristic positioning and meta-heuristic sequencing, which has the problems of complex solving rules and high time cost. In this study, the similarity measurement method based on the twin neural network model is used to evaluate the similarity of pieces in the source task and the target task. The reusability evaluation of packing tas

Exact and Metaheuristic Approaches for a Bi-Objective School Bus Scheduling Problem.

As a class of hard combinatorial optimization problems, the school bus routing problem has received considerable attention in the last decades. For a multi-school system, given the bus trips for each school, the school bus scheduling problem aims at optimizing bus schedules to serve all the trips within the school time windows. In this paper, we propose two approaches for solving the bi-objective school bus scheduling problem: an exact method of mixed integer programming (MIP) and a metaheuristic method which combines simulated annealing with local search. We develop MIP formulations for homog

H-HQNN: Hybrid quantum-classical neural network with feature selection by heuristics to predict heart failure.

Cardiovascular diseases are the most dominant cause of mortality across the entire world, claiming 17.9 million lives every year. According to recent trends, the mortality rate as a result of heart failure continues to increase particularly in low- and middle-income areas which means that early diagnostic tools desperately need to be discovered. Conventional biomarkers like NT-proBNP, troponins and creatinine levels are useful, although their sensitivity and specificity are low, particularly in identifying heart failure onset before it is actually clinically apparent. We suggest addressing the

Interpretable diagnostic system for multiocular diseases based on hybrid meta-heuristic feature selection.

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Cataract, Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) and Glaucoma are the four most common ocular conditions that affect a person's vision. Early detection in the asymptomatic stages can alleviate vision loss or slow down the progression of these diseases. However, manual diagnosis is a costly and tedious process, especially in mass screening applications. Computer aided diagnosis (CAD) systems serve as an aid to ophthalmologists in efficient diagnosis of ocular diseases. In particular, a generic CAD framework that detects multiple ocular diseases could be immensely bene

Knowledge-driven automated detection of pleural plaques and thickening in high resolution CT of the lung.

Consistent efforts are being made to build Computer-Aided Detection and Diagnosis systems for radiological images. Such systems depend on automated detection of various disease patterns, which are then combined together to obtain differential diagnosis. For diffuse lung diseases, over 12 disease patterns are of interest in High Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT) scans of the lung. In this paper, we present an automated detection method for two such patterns, namely Pleural Plaque and Diffuse Pleural Thickening. These are characteristic features of asbestos-related benign pleural disease. Th

Exploring deep neural networks via layer-peeled model: Minority collapse in imbalanced training.

In this paper, we introduce the Layer-Peeled Model, a nonconvex, yet analytically tractable, optimization program, in a quest to better understand deep neural networks that are trained for a sufficiently long time. As the name suggests, this model is derived by isolating the topmost layer from the remainder of the neural network, followed by imposing certain constraints separately on the two parts of the network. We demonstrate that the Layer-Peeled Model, albeit simple, inherits many characteristics of well-trained neural networks, thereby offering an effective tool for explaining and predict

Periodontal bone loss analysis via keypoint detection with heuristic post-processing.

OBJECTIVES: This study proposes a deep learning framework and an annotation methodology for the automatic detection of periodontal bone loss landmarks, associated conditions, and staging. Consensus of All Solutions for Intractable Phylogenetic Tree Inference.

Solving median tree problems is a classic approach for inferring species trees from a collection of discordant gene trees. Median tree problems are typically NP-hard and dealt with by local search heuristics. Unfortunately, such heuristics generally lack provable correctness and precision. Algorithmic advances addressing this uncertainty have led to exact dynamic programming formulations suitable to solve a well-studied group of median tree problems for smaller phylogenetic analyses. However, these formulations allow computing only very few optimal species trees out of possibly many such trees
