Excitation properties of computational models of unmyelinated peripheral axons.

Biophysically based computational models of nerve fibers are important tools for designing electrical stimulation therapies, investigating drugs that affect ion channels, and studying diseases that affect neurons. Although peripheral nerves are primarily composed of unmyelinated axons (i.e., C-fibers), most modeling efforts focused on myelinated axons. We implemented the single-compartment model of vagal afferents from Schild et al. (1994) (Schild JH, Clark JW, Hay M, Mendelowitz D, Andresen MC, Kunze DL. J Neurophysiol 71: 2338-2358, 1994) and extended the model into a multicompartment axon,

Multidetector row computed tomography of the aorta and peripheral arteries.

MDCT represents a significant advance on SDCT and the advantages it brings are particularly clear in CTA applications. It allows cost effective assessment of longer segments of vascular territories to be imaged with higher spatial, contrast, and temporal resolution. It has replaced SDCT as the new CT standard and its technical abilities are rapidly approaching the temporal resolution of EBCT. With 3-D post processing tools its main benefit is in imaging studies customized to the patient's pathology, with greater measurement accuracy and reliable longitudinal assessment. MDCTA is increasingly a

Correlation of Multidetector Computed Tomography Peripheral Angiography with Color Duplex Sonography in Peripheral Arterial Disease.

BACKGROUND: With aging of the global population peripheral arterial disease is increasingly common. Arteriography, computed tomography angiography and magnetic resonance angiography are common modalities used for evaluation of peripheral arterial disease. However, they have limitations of being invasive, costly, limited availability or contraindicated in patients with renal impairment or contrast allergy. Duplex imaging, a method of evaluation of peripheral arterial disease is cost effective, widely available and safe even in patients with renal impairment and contrast allergy. METHODS: A pro

Identification of Osteosarcopenia by High-Resolution Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography.

Osteosarcopenia is a prevalent geriatric disease with a significantly increased risk of adverse outcomes than osteoporosis or sarcopenia alone. Identification of older adults with osteosarcopenia using High-Resolution Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (HR-pQCT) could allow better clinical decision making. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of HR-pQCT to differentiate osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and osteosarcopenia in older adults, with a primary outcome to derive a model to distinguish older adults with osteosarcopenia from those with low bone mineral density only, and to exam

Tutorial: a computational framework for the design and optimization of peripheral neural interfaces.

Peripheral neural interfaces have been successfully used in the recent past to restore sensory-motor functions in disabled subjects and for the neuromodulation of the autonomic nervous system. The optimization of these neural interfaces is crucial for ethical, clinical and economic reasons. In particular, hybrid models (HMs) constitute an effective framework to simulate direct nerve stimulation and optimize virtually every aspect of implantable electrode design: the type of electrode (for example, intrafascicular versus extrafascicular), their insertion position and the used stimulation routin

Accuracy and precision study in vitro for peripheral quantitative computed tomography.

We evaluated the accuracy and precision of a peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) scanner, the Stratec XCT-960, using 12 human cadaveric forearms. The accuracy was determined by comparing the total bone mineral content (BMC) with the ash weight (AW). We scanned and ashed three consecutive slices (thickness 2.5 mm) at the standard position (s-position) and at 2.5 mm both proximal and distal to the s-position. The correlation coefficient between the AW and total BMC using slices at the s-position was r = 0.87 with an accuracy error (random component) of 15.5%. The correlation coeff

A Computational Framework for Pre-Interventional Planning of Peripheral Arteriovenous Malformations.

PURPOSE: Peripheral arteriovenous malformations (pAVMs) are congenital lesions characterised by abnormal high-flow, low-resistance vascular connections-the so-called nidus-between arteries and veins. The mainstay treatment typically involves the embolisation of the nidus, however the complexity of pAVMs often leads to uncertain outcomes. This study aims at developing a simple, yet effective computational framework to aid the clinical decision making around the treatment of pAVMs using routinely acquired clinical data. METHODS: A computational model was developed to simulate the pre-, intra-,

Right common iliac aneurysm by peripheral computed tomographic angiography.

This is a 77-year-old diabetic woman with history of claudication (Rutherford Category 2). Due to fear of underestimating disease with ankle-brachial index in a person with diabetes and advancing age, a CT angiogram was performed. The right common iliac artery had aneurysmal disease (3.4 cm) and a thrombus of right internal iliac artery. There was also a 40% stenosis of right external iliac artery and a left subtotal internal iliac stenosis at the origin. Given it's non-invasive nature and high diagnostic accuracy, CTA is poised to become the noninvasive test of choice in patients with suspect

[The value of peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) in the diagnosis of osteoporosis].

AIM: To evaluate the accuracy of distal radial pQCT in discriminating between osteoporotic fracture and non fracture cases and its efficiency to predict fractures. METHODS: Densitometric data determined with an XCT 900 Stratec pQCT device at the distal radius of women who had suffered distal radius (57), spinal (87) or femoral neck fractures (21) before or after measurement were compared with densitometric data of age-matched healthy women (265) and were analyzed in regression tests. Women whose fractures occurred before measuring were selectively analyzed. RESULTS: More significant differen

Hansen's disease: computed tomography findings in peripheral nerve lesions.

Hansen's disease induces hypertrophic neuropathy. Computed tomography was performed on ulnar, median, peroneal and tibial posterior nerves where there is clinically presumed lesion. The CT findings (diameter and density) have correlated well with intra-operative findings. The computed tomography is a reliable method to study peripheral nerve lesions in Hansen's disease patients.

The use of the signal averaging computer for evaluation of peripheral nerve problems.

Utilization of signal averaging computers to analyze evoked nerve potentials generated by an electrical stimulus is a useful adjunct to clinical evaluation. Currently, somatosensory evoked responses are useful for the evaluation of the peripheral nerve with suspected compression syndromes, neuropathies of unknown etiologies, post-traumatic injuries, neuromas-in-continuity, and brachial plexus injuries. Further refinements in the system will result in increased clinical application of this useful modality. Present data indicate that neuromas with a conduction velocity of less than 10 meters per

Computational Models-Based Detection of Peripheral Malarial Parasites in Blood Smears.

The most common human parasite as per the medical experts is the malarial disease, which is caused by a protozoan parasite, and Plasmodium falciparum, a common parasite in humans. A microscopist with expertise in malaria diagnosis must conduct this complex procedure to identify the stages of infection. This epidemic is an ongoing disease in some parts of the world, which is commonly found. A Kaggle repository was used to upload the data collected from the NIH portal. The dataset contains 27558 samples, of which 13779 samples carry parasites and 13779 samples do not. This paper focuses on two o

High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography in children with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Bone health in children with osteogenesis imperfecta is monitored using radiographs and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, which have limitations. High-resolution peripheral quantitative CT can non-invasively derive bone microarchitectural data. Children with severe osteogenesis imperfecta have fragile deformed bones, and positioning for this scan can be difficult. We assessed the feasibility of high-resolution peripheral quantitative CT in nine children aged 9-15 years with osteogenesis imperfecta and compared results with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and with healthy controls. All nine re

Noninvasive computed tomography-guided marking technique for peripheral pulmonary nodules.

BACKGROUND: Identification of the exact location of small peripheral pulmonary nodules during thoracoscopic wedge resection (TWR) is crucial. We describe a new method of computed tomography (CT)-guided marking without puncturing the visceral pleura (VP) for minimally palpable pulmonary nodules. METHODS: Preoperative CT scans were performed 1 day before TWR with the patient in the lateral decubitus position. Under CT guidance, we marked the skin over the pulmonary nodule. During TS, an indwelling catheter was inserted perpendicular to the marked skin surface and put a mark with gentian violet

Neural computations in the foveal and peripheral visual fields during active search.

Active vision requires coordinated attentional processing across both foveal and peripheral receptive fields (RFs), yet the underlying neural dynamics and computational mechanisms remain poorly understood. Previous research has predominantly focused on attention in the visual periphery, leaving the role of foveal processing in naturalistic tasks largely unexplored. Here, we recorded neural activity from both foveal and peripheral RFs in areas V4 and IT of monkeys during free-gaze visual search among complex stimuli. We found robust feature-based attentional enhancements in foveal units, challe

Risk of pedestrian collision for persons with peripheral field loss: A computational analysis.

SIGNIFICANCE: People with peripheral field loss report colliding with other pedestrians on their blind side(s). We show that, in dyadic collision scenarios between persons, one with field loss, such as homonymous hemianopia, and the other normally sighted pedestrian, collisions occur only if the persons with homonymous hemianopia are overtaking the pedestrians, and the collision risk is concentrated at farther bearing angles than previously suggested. PURPOSE: Prior work computed the risk of collision while simulating both pedestrians as points and did not consider the ability of the other pe

[Computer morphometry of peripheral blood lymphocytes in elderly patients with chronic pyelonephritis.].

The aim of the study was to investigate the peculiarities of morphometric parameters of peripheral blood lymphocytes in chronic pyelonephritis in elderly patients in comparison with young and middle-aged patients. A total of 81 patients with chronic pyelonephritis in the exacerbation phase were examined. All patients were divided into three age groups according to WHO recommendations: the 1st - 42patients of young age (18-44 years); the 2nd - 17 patients of middle age (45-59 years); the 3rd - 22 elderly patients (60-74 years). Computer morphometry of lymphocytes was performed in all examined p

High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography: research or clinical practice?

High-resolution peripheral quantitative CT (HR-pQCT) is a low-dose three-dimensional imaging technique, originally developed for in vivo assessment of bone microarchitecture at the distal radius and tibia in osteoporosis. HR-pQCT has the ability to discriminate trabecular and cortical bone compartments, providing densitometric and structural parameters. At present, HR-pQCT is mostly used in research settings, despite evidence showing that it may be a valuable tool in osteoporosis and other diseases. This review summarizes the main applications of HR-pQCT and addresses the limitations that curr

Computational analysis of peripheral blood smears detects disease-associated cytomorphologies.

Many hematological diseases are characterized by altered abundance and morphology of blood cells and their progenitors. Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), for example, are a group of blood cancers characterised by cytopenias, dysplasia of hematopoietic cells and blast expansion. Examination of peripheral blood slides (PBS) in MDS often reveals changes such as abnormal granulocyte lobulation or granularity and altered red blood cell (RBC) morphology; however, some of these features are shared with conditions such as haematinic deficiency anemias. Definitive diagnosis of MDS requires expert cytomo
