TeleBCI: remote user training, monitoring, and communication with an evoked-potential brain-computer interface.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are a movement-independent form of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The rare utilization of such devices in the homes of patients stems from a number of factors, one of which is the complexity of providing training and support for users. This paper describes the teleBCI interface used to train the patient and facilitator in the operation of a virtual keyboard using an evoked potential BCI. Fifteen patients with motor neuron disease and their communication partners were included in the stu

Efficacy of a Standardized Computer-Based Training Curriculum to Teach Echocardiographic Identification of Rheumatic Heart Disease to Nonexpert Users.

The ability to integrate echocardiographic for rheumatic heart disease (RHD) into RHD prevention programs is limited because of lack of financial and expert human resources in endemic areas. Task shifting to nonexperts is promising; but investigations into workforce composition and training schemes are needed. The objective of this study was to test nonexperts' ability to interpret RHD screening echocardiograms after a brief, standardized, computer-based training course. Six nonexperts completed a 3-week curriculum on image interpretation. Participant performance was tested in a school-screeni

Evolution of users' subjective experience over three training sessions with an EEG Motor-Imagery Brain-Computer Interface (MI-BCI).

Motor Imagery-based Brain-Computer Interfaces (MI-BCIs) have been shown to be promising for numerous applications, including sport training and entertainment for healthy users, but also for improving or restoring functions in neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, e.g., for motor rehabilitation post-stroke or for attention training in attention deficits. Reliable interactions with such MI-BCIs require a heavy training process for both the machine and the user. Yet, how User eXperience (UX) evolves during standard training is still largely unclear, both within and between sessions/days. T

Neuroprosthetic Decoder Training as Imitation Learning.

Neuroprosthetic brain-computer interfaces function via an algorithm which decodes neural activity of the user into movements of an end effector, such as a cursor or robotic arm. In practice, the decoder is often learned by updating its parameters while the user performs a task. When the user's intention is not directly observable, recent methods have demonstrated value in training the decoder against a surrogate for the user's intended movement. Here we show that training a decoder in this way is a novel variant of an imitation learning problem, where an oracle or expert is employed for superv

Parallel man-machine training in development of EEG-based cursor control.

A new parallel man-machine training approach to brain-computer interface (BCI) succeeded through a unique application of machine learning methods. The BCI system could train users to control an animated cursor on the computer screen by voluntary electroencephalogram (EEG) modulation. Our BCI system requires only two to four electrodes, and has a relatively short training time for both the user and the machine. Moving the cursor in one dimension, our subjects were able to hit 100% of randomly selected targets, while in two dimensions, accuracies of approximately 63% and 76% was achieved with ou

Unsubscribe, pleeezz!!!: management and training of media competence in computer-mediated communication.

Computer-mediated communication (CMC) has created a new communication divide. Mostly, this division is due to technical and access problems. Overlooked is yet another divide in terms of user communication competence. This contribution focuses on media competence based on theories about communication competence and theories about CMC. Two field studies are presented: an analysis of a virtual seminar chat communication (22 participants, 3 weeks' duration) and an analysis of unsubscribe-failures within 2 years of a German mailing list (average of 1,000 subscriptions). Data from both studies revea

Virtual Reality Hysteroscopy.

New interactive computer technologies are having a significant influence on medical education, training, and practice. The newest innovation in computer technology, virtual reality, allows an individual to be immersed in a dynamic computer-generated, three-dimensional environment and can provide realistic simulations of surgical procedures. A new virtual reality hysteroscope passes through a sensing device that synchronizes movements with a three-dimensional model of a uterus. Force feedback is incorporated into this model, so the user actually experiences the collision of an instrument agains

A Simple and Reproducible ImageJ Workflow for Measuring Areas of Irregularly Shaped Necrotic Lesions on Plant Leaves.

Accurately quantifying the areas of necrotic lesions on plant leaves is essential for evaluating plant-pathogen interactions and disease resistance. Although digital image analysis methods using ImageJ are widely employed, they often require case-specific optimization and may not be readily applicable across different experimental conditions. Furthermore, many studies have used ImageJ for lesion measurement without providing methodological details, which limits reproducibility. Here, we present a simple, step-by-step ImageJ workflow for measuring irregular necrotic lesions using a standard per

A probabilistic approach for calibration time reduction in hybrid EEG-fTCD brain-computer interfaces.

BACKGROUND: Generally, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) require calibration before usage to ensure efficient performance. Therefore, each BCI user has to attend a certain number of calibration sessions to be able to use the system. However, such calibration requirements may be difficult to fulfill especially for patients with disabilities. In this paper, we introduce a probabilistic transfer learning approach to reduce the calibration requirements of our EEG-fTCD hybrid BCI designed using motor imagery (MI) and flickering mental rotation (MR)/word generation (WG) paradigms. The proposed approa
