Operant evaluative conditioning.

Two experiments investigated an evaluative transfer from actions producing pleasant and unpleasant outcomes to novel stimuli that were assigned to those actions in a subsequent stimulus-response task. Results showed that a fictitious social group was liked more when this group was assigned to the action previously associated with pleasant outcomes relative to the other action. This evaluative transfer from operant contingencies was observed although the actions did not generate outcomes during the stimulus-action pairing. It is concluded that operant contingencies can be used for preference co

Operant House: A versatile open-source platform for automated operant conditioning testing of mice in home cages.

Operant conditioning is a powerful method for probing cognitive functions, yet its widespread use is constrained by low throughput, labor-intensive procedures, and high costs. Here, we developed "Operant House," a low-cost, programmable device equipped with a touchscreen, retractable levers, and a water-reward port, designed to enable automated operant conditioning with minimal experimenter intervention in individually housed mice within their home cages. Although individual home-cage testing requires careful attention to animal welfare, the system permits continuous monitoring through live ca

Virtual reality-based balance training system augmented with operant conditioning paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Stroke-related sensory and motor deficits often steal away the independent mobility and balance from stroke survivors. Often, this compels the stroke survivors to rely heavily on their non-paretic leg during weight shifting to execute activities of daily living (ADL), with reduced usage of the paretic leg. Increased reliance on non-paretic leg often leads to learned nonuse of the paretic leg. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the contribution of individual legs toward one's overall balance. In turn, techniques can be developed to condition the usage of both the legs during one'

Operant conditioning of EEG rhythms and ritalin in the treatment of hyperkinesis.

Enhanced voluntary motor inhibition regularly accompanies conditioned increases in the sensorimotor rhythm (SMR), a 12--14-Hz Rolandic EEG rhythm in cats.A similar rhythm, presumably SMR, has also been identified in the human EEG. The clinical effectiveness of SMR operant conditioning has been claimed for epilepsy, insomnia, and hyperkinesis concurrent with seizure disorders. The present report attempts to follow up and replicate preliminary findings that suggested the technique's successful application to hyperkinesis uncomplicated by a history of epilepsy. SMR was defined as 12--14-Hz EEG ac

Restoring walking after spinal cord injury: operant conditioning of spinal reflexes can help.

People with incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) frequently suffer motor disabilities due to spasticity and poor muscle control, even after conventional therapy. Abnormal spinal reflex activity often contributes to these problems. Operant conditioning of spinal reflexes, which can target plasticity to specific reflex pathways, can enhance recovery. In rats in which a right lateral column lesion had weakened right stance and produced an asymmetrical gait, up-conditioning of the right soleus H-reflex, which increased muscle spindle afferent excitation of soleus, strengthened right stance and elim

AutonoMouse: High throughput operant conditioning reveals progressive impairment with graded olfactory bulb lesions.

Operant conditioning is a crucial tool in neuroscience research for probing brain function. While molecular, anatomical and even physiological techniques have seen radical increases in throughput, efficiency, and reproducibility in recent years, behavioural tools have somewhat lagged behind. Here we present a fully automated, high-throughput system for self-initiated conditioning of up to 25 group-housed, radio-frequency identification (RFID) tagged mice over periods of several months and >106 trials. We validate this "AutonoMouse" system in a series of olfactory behavioural tasks and show tha

LORETA Neurofeedback in the Precuneus: Operant Conditioning in Basic Mechanisms of Self-Regulation.

Low-resolution brain electomagnetic tomography (LORETA) neurofeedback provides a mechanism to influence the electrical activity of the brain in intracranial space. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of LORETA neurofeedback (LNFB) in the precuneus as a mechanism for improving self-regulation in controls and a heterogeneous diagnostic group (DX). Thirteen participants completed between 10 and 20 sessions of LNFB training in a 3-voxel cluster in the left precuneus. The participants included 5 nonclinical university students, and 8 adults with heterogeneous psychiatric diagnoses. W

Low-dimensional signatures of neuronal activity associated with long-term operant conditioning in Aplysia.

Operant conditioning is a form of learning in which a behavior is reinforced by reward. Operant conditioning has multiple temporal domains, ranging from short-term, lasting a few minutes, to long-term, persisting for at least 24 h. The extent to which short- and long-term operant conditioning memories rely on shared or separate neural mechanisms is poorly understood. Voltage-sensitive dye (VSD) imaging has been used previously to record the activity of a large number of neurons simultaneously in the buccal ganglion to measure changes in neuronal activity during short-term operant conditioning.

Self-injurious behavior in Rett syndrome: interactions between features of Rett syndrome and operant conditioning.

Operant and biological theories of the cause of self-injurious behavior (SIB) in people with a mental handicap are often viewed as mutually exclusive. In this single case study, interactions between features of Rett syndrome and operant conditioning as determinants of SIB are examined. Functional analysis by analog methodology indicated different functions for two forms of SIB shown by the subject: automatic reinforcement by sensory stimulation and escape from social interactions. It is suggested that features of Rett syndrome established conditions under which operant conditioning of self-inj

An Operant Conditioning Task to Assess the Choice between Wheel Running and Palatable Food in Mice.

Wheel running, especially in the homecage, has been widely used to study the neurobiology of exercise because animal tends to use it voluntarily. However, as for each reward, its consumption (in the present case, running performance) does not specifically provide information on its incentive value, i.e., the extent to which animals are motivated to run independently from their consumption of that reward. This is a major drawback, especially when focusing on the neurobiology governing the pathological imbalances between exercise and e.g., feeding (obesity, anorexia nervosa). Yet, few studies ha

Operant conditioning of rat soleus H-reflex oppositely affects another H-reflex and changes locomotor kinematics.

H-reflex conditioning is a model for studying the plasticity associated with a new motor skill. We are exploring its effects on other reflexes and on locomotion. Rats were implanted with EMG electrodes in both solei (SOL(R) and SOL(L)) and right quadriceps (QD(R)), and stimulating cuffs on both posterior tibial (PT) nerves and right posterior femoral nerve. When SOL(R) EMG remained in a defined range, PT(R) stimulation just above M-response threshold elicited the SOL(R) H-reflex. Analogous procedures elicited the QD(R) and SOL(L) H-reflexes. After a control period, each rat was exposed for 50

Exposure to histone deacetylase inhibitors during Pavlovian conditioning enhances subsequent cue-induced reinstatement of operant behavior.

Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) strengthen memory following fear conditioning and cocaine-induced conditioned place preference. Here, we examined the effects of two nonspecific HDACIs, valproic acid (VPA) and sodium butyrate (NaB), on appetitive learning measured by conditioned stimulus (CS)-induced reinstatement of operant responding. Rats were trained to lever press for food reinforcement and then injected with VPA (50-200 mg/kg, i.p.), NaB (250-1000 mg/kg, i.p.), or saline vehicle (1.0 ml/kg), 2 h before receiving pairings of noncontingent presentation of food pellets preceded by a

Behavioral and in vitro correlates of compulsive-like food seeking induced by operant conditioning in Aplysia.

Motivated behaviors comprise appetitive actions whose occurrence results partly from an internally driven incentive to act. Such impulsive behavior can also be regulated by external rewarding stimuli that, through learning processes, can lead to accelerated and seemingly automatic, compulsive-like recurrences of the rewarded act. Here, we explored such behavioral plasticity in Aplysia by analyzing how appetitive reward stimulation in a form of operant conditioning can modify a goal-directed component of the animal's food-seeking behavior. In naive animals, protraction/retraction cycles of the

Operant stimulus control applied to maze behavior: heat escape conditioning and discrimination reversal in Alligator mississippiensis.

Eight alligators were trained to escape heat by traversing an 8-ft runway containing right or left approaches to a water tank. All subjects were run until they had satisfied three criteria of stable response time, after which the predominant escape path was blocked, requiring discrimination reversal. Seven subjects again met the criteria; three also met them in a second reversal.

Using Classical and Operant Conditioning to Train a Shifting Behavior in Juvenile False Water Cobras (Hydrodynastes gigas).

All animals have the capacity to learn through operant conditioning and other types of learning, and as a result, zoos and other animal care facilities have shifted towards the use of positive reinforcement training to shape the behavior of animals under their care. Training offers animals the choice to participate in their own husbandry routines and veterinary procedures, while also providing mental stimulation. By adopting these practices, the welfare of animals in human care has improved, but it has not been applied equally across taxa. Snakes are frequently overlooked in the discussion of

Sex differences in the social motivation of rats: Insights from social operant conditioning, behavioural economics, and video tracking.

BACKGROUND: Social behaviour plays a key role in mental health and wellbeing, and developing greater understanding of mechanisms underlying social interaction-particularly social motivation-holds substantial transdiagnostic impact. Common rodent behavioural assays used to assess social behaviour are limited in their assessment of social motivation, whereas the social operant conditioning model can provide unique and valuable insights into social motivation. Further characterisation of common experimental parameters that may influence social motivation within the social operant model, as well a

An operant conditioning model to assess changes in feeding behavior associated with temporomandibular joint inflammation in the rat.

AIMS: To develop and validate a model in which to assess a loss of function associated with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) inflammation in awake, freely moving rats. METHODS: The dependent variable in the model was the time between food rewards (pellets), or interfeeding interval (IFI). IFI was quantified after rats were trained to "bar-press" for food. To validate use of the IFI as a surrogate for temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain, we determined the impact of several manipulations, including changes in pellet size, the presence and severity of inflammation of the TMJ, masseter muscle, or

Operant conditioning of the motor-evoked potential and locomotion in people with and without chronic incomplete spinal cord injury.

Foot drop is very common among people with chronic incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) and likely stems from SCI that disturbs the corticospinal activation of the ankle dorsiflexor tibialis anterior (TA). Thus, if one can recover or increase the corticospinal excitability reduced by SCI, motor function recovery may be facilitated. Here, we hypothesized that in people suffering from weak dorsiflexion due to chronic incomplete SCI, increasing the TA motor-evoked potential (MEP) through operant up-conditioning can improve dorsiflexion during locomotion, while in people without any injuries, it wo
