Nasopharynx on Cone-beam Computed Tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is endemic in Asians and North Africans. Radiologically it is first identified as asymmetry of the Fossa of Rosenmüller (FR) in the nasopharynx, which is also visible on the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: Eighty three consecutive CBCTs including the whole nasopharynx (10 × 10 cm and 10 × 5 cm fields-of-view (FOVs)) of 28 males and 55 females. The CBCTs and the prints of their air-filled pharynxes were reviewed and assigned to one of Takasugi's 3 types: Type A, no FR; Type B, some FR; and Type C, full and open FR. RESULTS: The Types

Mandibular incisive canal: cone beam computed tomography.

PURPOSE: Panoramic radiography is often used to analyze the anatomical structure of the teeth, jaws, and temporomandibular joints. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging allows multiple axial slices of the image to be obtained through these anatomical structures. The aim of this study was to assess CBCT compared with panoramic radiography to verify the presence, location, and dimensions of the mandibular incisive canal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBCT scan images and panoramic radiographs of 89 subjects were compared for the presence of the mandibular incisive canal, its location, size, and

Cone beam computed tomography in oral implants.

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanners for the oral and maxillofacial region were pioneered in the late 1990s independently by Arai et al. in Japan and Mozzo et al. CBCT has a lower dose of radiation, minimal metal artifacts, reduced costs, easier accessibility, and easier handling than multislice computed tomography (MSCT); however, the latter is still considered a better choice for the analysis of bone density using a Hounsfield unit (HU) scale. Oral implants require localized area of oral and maxillofacial area for radiation exposure; so, CBCT is an ideal choice. CBCT scans help in t

Operational principles for cone-beam computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was introduced into the U.S. market in 2001. Today, there are more than 3,000 installed units in the United States. There are numerous CBCT manufacturers and types of units. To produce the best imaging results, clinicians need to be knowledgeable about the CBCT unit, the clinical issue being investigated and how to optimize the unit's operational parameters. The author identifies the variables that should be considered for each imaging session and addresses the building blocks required to design the appropriate imaging strategy. The remaining ar

Cone-Beam Computed Tomography for Temporomandibular Joint Imaging.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be viewed using various imaging techniques. Due to relatively low radiation doses and excellent spatial resolution, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is being utilized more frequently in dental-maxillofacial imaging. For the diagnosis and treatment of TMJ disorders, an imaging examination is required. The osseous compartment is visualized using conventional CT, and CBCT and soft tissue imaging are extremely well appreciated on MRI. However, conventional TMJ imaging has its limitations due to its two-dimensional view and adjacent anatomical superimpositi

Intraoperative endodontic applications of cone-beam computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: The use of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in endodontics for diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up has been extensively reported in the literature. Compared with the traditional spiral computed tomography, high-resolution limited CBCT results in a fraction of the effective absorbed dose of radiation. However, it should be prescribed only after weighing the cost of radiation exposure with the benefit of the diagnostic information that can be obtained from the scan. METHODS: The purpose of this article is to discuss the application and advantages of intraoperative CBC

Cone beam computed tomography: craniofacial and airway analysis.

Imaging plays a role in the anatomic assessment of the airway and adjacent structures. This article discusses the use of 3-dimensional (3D) imaging (cone beam computed tomography [CBCT]) to evaluate the airway and selected regional anatomic variables that may contribute to obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (OSDB) in patients. CBCT technology uses a cone-shaped x-ray beam with a special image intensifier and a solid-state sensor or an amorphous silicon plate for capturing the image. Incorporation of 3D imaging into daily practice will allow practitioners to readily evaluate and screen pati

Cone beam computed tomography and obstructive sleep apnoea.

Sleep apnoea is characterized by an intermittent cessation or diminution of airflow during sleep that may result in significant pulmonary and cardiac consequences, and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It is a common disease that affects approximately 20% of patients who snore, equating to a total prevalence in the population of about 4% of all middle aged men and 2% of women. In reality, due to lack of recognition and the difficulty with obtaining an accurate diagnosis, the actual incidence is likely much higher.

Cone-beam computed tomography evaluation of maxillary sinusitis.

INTRODUCTION: Dental pain originating from the maxillary sinuses can pose a diagnostic problem. Periapical lesion development eliciting inflammatory changes in the mucosal lining can cause the development of a sinusitis. The purpose of this study was to describe the radiographic characteristics of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis as seen on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and to determine whether any tooth or any tooth root was more frequently associated with this disease. METHODS: Eighty-two CBCT scans previously identified as showing maxillary sinus pathosis were examined for sinu

Cone Beam Computed Tomography Evaluation of Inverted Mesiodentes.

A mesiodens is the most common type of supernumerary teeth. The purpose of this report is to present a rare occurrence of non-syndromic impacted inverted mesiodentes in an 8.5-year-old boy who presented with a chief complaint of delayed eruption of his permanent maxillary left central incisor. Occlusal and panoramic radiographs, as well as cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) with a three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction image, confirmed that one supernumerary tooth had perforated the nasal fossa floor and the other was in close approximation to the to the same site. Surgical removal of both m

Four curious cases of cone-beam computed tomography.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has become popular, and its many inherent advantages are indisputable. Nevertheless, CBCT is prescribed cautiously because the radiation dosage is higher than that of conventional radiography. When and to what extent should CBCT be prescribed for orthodontic patients? The purpose of this article is to present 4 curious cases in which a considerable discrepancy was found between the conventional panoramic radiograph and the CBCT view. Is it time to spare patients an unnecessary conventional panoramic radiograph and shift to CBCT for all patients?

Cone beam computed tomography: evaluation of maxillofacial pathology.

CBCT scans are increasingly used in evaluating osseous pathology in the maxillofacial skeleton, e.g., cysts, benign and malignant tumors, inflammatory conditions, paranasal sinus disorders, and soft-tissue calcifications. The authors discuss the diagnostic benefits and limitation of CBCT images compared to other imaging methods. CBCT scans provide superior diagnostic information compared to panoramic radiographs. In most maxillofacial diagnostic and surgical planning or follow-up needs, CBCT scans can replace multidetector CT scans.

Cone-beam computed tomography-guided percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of a flat-detector C-arm-guided radiographic technique (cone-beam computed tomography [CBCT]) for percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy (PRG) insertion. Eighteen patients (13 men and 5 women; mean age 62 years) in whom percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) had failed underwent CBCT-guided PRG insertion. PEG failure or unsuitability was caused by upper gastrointestinal tract obstruction in all cases. Indications for gastrostomy were esophageal and head and neck malignancies, respectively. Before the PRG procedure, initial C-arm CBCT

Cherubism: Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Findings in Two Siblings.

Cherubism is an uncommon, multilocular cystic condition of the jaws. This autosomal dominant, nonneoplastic, fibro-osseous condition of the jaws affects children and is self-limiting. Clinically, it shows up as an expansion or distortion of the jaw together with an unnatural teeth alignment. In their most severe forms, these deformations might cause phonation difficulties, decreased pharynx lumen, visual issues, and psychological effects. This case report describes a case report of two siblings involving the maxilla and the mandible presenting with a painless bilateral symmetrical enlargement.
