This paper explores organ donation through the perspective of Reconstructionist Confucianism. I argue that for organ donation in China to be morally permissible, public policy must conform to the norms of Confucian benevolence. Reconstructionist Confucianism appreciates benevolence as an objectively important feature of morality deeply connected to moral rules governing propriety, integrity, righteousness, and human freedom. Here, benevolence involves sincere affection for another as an intrinsic good, rather than as a means to achieve other purposes. It requires developing self-restraint and

Debates in public health ethics have been dominated by the assumptions of Western liberalism: a priority given to liberty and autonomy over other values, an individualistic view of social ontology, a focus on personal responsibility, a minimal set of obligations (only created through consent), and a marginalization of social, cultural, and religious context. Examining issues in public health ethics from the perspective of a different moral tradition reveals that such assumptions are not timeless truths, but rather choices that require justification. In this paper, we briefly outline a view of

Current evidence implicates educational pressures and reduced outdoor time as major causes of myopia. This paper examines the ongoing battle against the myopia epidemic in East Asia, including its cultural offshoots such as Singapore, where over 80% of young adults are myopic. East Asian societies share deeply rooted Confucian values that attach great importance to education and familial obligations, with heavy parental investment in education and the perception that academic excellence reflects filial piety. Coupled with a strong emphasis on standardised test results, East Asian children face

Complete ectogenesis (CE), if technologically realized, would portend a radical decoupling of fetal development from the female body, thereby dismantling the biological and cultural nexus between gestation and kinship. This paper argues that a Confucian approach offers a fruitful framework for critically assessing CE, as it appropriately shifts attention from the moral status or isolated interests of individual entities (such as the fetus, women, or parents) to the quality of relationships-especially the parent-child relationship. From this perspective, CE represents not merely a technical inn

OBJECTIVE: Although gamification has been shown to enhance user motivation and engagement, its effects may vary across cultural contexts. This study examines how Confucian values shape users' continuance intention in leaderboard-based health gamification through positive and negative psychological pathways.
METHODS: We conducted an online survey of 300 WeChat Run users and analyzed the data using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Drawing on the Confucian values perspective and the dedication-constraint model, we conceptualized self-cultivation as an enabling Confuc

This article develops a cross-cultural theoretical model of moral-psychological transformation by reinterpreting Confucian self-cultivation as a system of ritualized embodiment. Situated within theoretical and philosophical psychology, the article asks how bodily discipline, ritual form, and culturally mediated repetition may reorganize attention, affect, conduct, habit, and moral agency. Drawing on embodied cognition, moral psychology, ritual theory, cultural psychology, and Confucian philosophical discourse, the study proposes the Confucian Embodied Self-Cultivation Model. The model is groun

Artificial Intelligence (AI) assisted writing tools, such as ChatGPT have arisen rapidly and created a socio-technical phenomenon of fast technology adoption in higher education. Traditional models focus on early adoption but understanding the behavioral pathway that accounts for intensive AI overuse is critical. To summarize, this study enriched the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) by developing a sequential mediation model: Perceptions (PU/PEOU) → Satisfaction → Habit → AI Overuse and investigated boundary conditions of this process regarding Confucian Cultural Values as moderator. The body of a living organ donor is not merely a medicalized object but also a vessel for nurturing familial ethical bonds and reconstructing the self. The Confucian perspective on the body offers a unique lens for interpreting the donor's physical and existential situation. Confucianism interweaves the act of bodily donation with the harmony and continuity of the moral individual within the family, the production of ethical relationships, and the formation of self-awareness, thereby providing a multidimensional interpretation of the donor's bodily experience. Through their bodily sacrifice, l

OBJECTIVE: Declining mental health among university students is a global concern. This study aimed to compare the effects of a Confucianism-based Internet-delivered Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (C-ACT) with a standard mindfulness-based I-ACT (M-ACT) and to examine the longitudinal relationship between psychological flexibility (PF) and meaning-centered coping (MCC).
METHOD: In this randomized controlled trial, 300 Chinese university students were assigned to either the C-ACT intervention or the M-ACT active comparison group. Both online interventions were delivered over an 8-week period,

BACKGROUND: Medical staff in Chinese tertiary hospitals experience excessive workloads, increasing burnout vulnerability. Traditional cultural resources may influence their job attitudes, but this area remains unexplored.
PURPOSE: Based on the job demands-resources model, this study investigates how Confucian coping, as a personal culture resource, moderates the relationships among job demands, resources, engagement and burnout in Chinese medical staff.
METHODS: Using an online self-administered survey, we collected data from 1653 medical staff members across 14 tertiary hospitals in China.

The Chinese pre-Qin Confucianism puts forward the concept of "Harmony," covering "Balanced Harmony," "External Harmony," and "Internal Harmony," etc. "Balanced Harmony" refers to the harmonious state of balance at both ends. "External Harmony" indicates the harmonious relationship with others, with society and with nature. "Internal Harmony" reveals the harmonious state within oneself between body and mind. "Balanced Harmony" is the ideal pursuit of Harmony, "External Harmony" and "Internal Harmony" are the two basic contents of Harmony, the trinity of which constitute a systematic concept of

INTRODUCTION: In contemporary higher education, particularly within Confucian cultural contexts characterized by high power distance and hierarchical structures, leadership plays a critical role in fostering positive employee behaviors. Despite growing interest in authentic leadership, limited research has examined its influence on organizational citizenship behavior in non-Western settings, especially considering underlying mechanisms and boundary conditions. This study addresses this gap by investigating the relationship between authentic leadership and organizational citizenship behavior, w

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) may be an 'idiom' of psychological distress in Confucian heritage cultures (CHCs).
OBJECTIVES: This systematic review/meta-analysis estimated the prevalence of TMDs in CHCs and compared the differences in TMD occurrence between time periods and age groups. Additionally, the associated biopsychosocial risk factors were also examined.
METHODS: The study protocol was developed a priori following the PRISMA guidelines and Joanna Briggs Institute systematic review methodology (CRD42021245526). Electronic searches of seven databases were conducted fro

This article develops a hypothesis-and-theory framework for ethical tensions in contemporary Chinese end-of-life care and family mourning. It examines the relationship between Confucian ren'ai (benevolence), expressed through embodied familial care, and modern rights-based commitments to bodily autonomy, dignity, and informed choice. The article offers a conceptual and normative analysis informed by interpretive cultural inquiry and existing empirical research on family-centered decision-making, advance care planning, caregiver burden, and hospice and palliative care in China. It argues that t

This study evaluated a culturally adapted Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention, enhanced with Virtual Reality (VR) and Confucian values, for psychological distress in Chinese financial employees. In a randomized controlled trial, 82 financial employees were assigned to either the culturally adapted ACT intervention or a standard internet-based ACT control group. Assessments of distress (DASS-21), work/social adjustment (WSAS), and psychological flexibility (AAQ-II) were conducted at baseline, post-intervention (10 weeks), and 8-week follow-up. Both groups reported significant i

INTRODUCTION: Teacher care is closely linked to students' motivation and sense of belonging, yet commonly used teacher-care measures have been developed largely within Western educational psychology and the ethics of care. Confucian ren offers a culturally grounded account of humane teaching but has rarely been operationalized as a student-perceived classroom construct.
METHODS: Across two independent convenience samples of post-secondary students recruited from three institutions in Hubei Province, China, we developed and validated the Perceived Confucian Ren-Based Teaching (PRBT) scale and

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are common and affect individuals negatively.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the inter-relationship of painful TMDs with bodily pain, psychological well-being and distress in young people from a Confucian-heritage culture (CHC).
METHODS: Adolescents/young adults were recruited from a polytechnic in Singapore. While the presence/severity of painful TMDs and bodily pain were established with the DC/TMD Pain Screener (TPS) and Maciel's Pain Inventory, psychological well-being and distress were evaluated with the Scales of Psychological Well-be

OBJECTIVES: This study proposed a conceptual framework for reporting Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) Axis I conditions and investigated the prevalence of TMD subtypes/categories in patients from Confucian heritage cultures. Variances in gender, age, and TMD chronicity between Chinese (CN) and Korean (KR) patients were also explored.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects were recruited from consecutive patients seeking care at two University-based centers in Beijing and Seoul. Eligible patients completed a demographic survey as well as the DC/TMD Symptom Questionnaire an

BACKGROUND: Dignity is a cornerstone of quality palliative care. While Dignity Therapy has been developed to support dignity, its cultural foundations are rooted in Western individualistic values. In Confucian-family contexts, where interdependence and familial roles are paramount, the conceptualization of dignity and the relevance of life narratives may differ significantly. Understanding these culturally embedded perspectives is crucial for developing person-centered care that is truly resonant. AIM: This study aimed to explore how older adults in a Confucian-family context perceive and arti
