Improving the Consent Process for Superficial Abscesses Through Pre-printed Consent Forms.

Introduction Informed consent is essential to ensure that patients are appropriately educated about proposed procedures, including associated risks and potential benefits, to make a valid decision. Incision and drainage of an abscess is a common procedure performed by various healthcare professionals. Inconsistent practices in the consent process can lead to misunderstandings among the patient and have financial and legal complications for both the clinician and the hospital. This study aims to improve the consent process for the incision and drainage of a superficial abscess via the implement

Comprehensive Evaluation of AI Consent Forms in Otolaryngologic Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical consent documents are frequently written at reading levels exceeding average health literacy. Large language models (LLMs) may offer a scalable approach to generating clearer, procedure-specific consent forms. This study evaluated the clarity, clinical accuracy, and acceptability of consent forms generated by GPT-4 and Claude for common otolaryngologic procedures. METHODS: Twenty AI-generated consent forms (10 GPT-4.0, 10 Claude-2.1) were produced using standardized prompts. In a survey-based, non-clinical setting, five board-certified otolaryngologists independently ra

Shortened consent forms for genome-wide sequencing: Parent and provider perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Consent forms for exome and/or genome sequencing, collectively called genome-wide sequencing (GWS), frequently contain detailed information on complex topics such as sequencing analysis and incidental findings. Considering recent endeavors by the health care community to simplify GWS consent forms, it is important to gain stakeholders' perspectives on the content, length, and use of consent forms. METHODS: Thematic analysis was conducted on data obtained from focus groups with two participant cohorts: parents who previously provided consent for trio-based GWS as part of the transl

Patient Recall of Informed Consent at 4 Weeks After Total Hip Replacement With Standardized Versus Procedure-Specific Consent Forms.

OBJECTIVES: Informed consent plays a pivotal role in the operative process, and surgeons have an ethical and legal obligation to provide patients with information to allow for shared decision-making. Unfortunately, patient recall after the consent process is frequently poor. This study aims to evaluate the effect of procedure-specific consent forms on patient's recall four weeks after total hip replacement (THR). METHODS: This is a prospective study using a posttest-only control group design. Sixty adult patients undergoing total hip replacement were allocated to be consented using either the

The big Cs of the informed consent form: compliance and comprehension.

The informed consent process is a shield which protects subjects from harms that may be caused by a scientific enquiry. Only a competent participant with a complete understanding of the trial can give informed consent. Although the content of a valid informed consent form has been established, the Drugs and Cosmetics (First Amendment) Rules, 2013 have stipulated that ICFs must fulfil the requirements of Appendix V of Schedule Y. We considered 50 ICFs and analysed whether they complied with Appendix V. Our analysis reveals a gloomy picture, with 70% of the ICFs deviating from the requirements o

Role of procedure-specific consent forms in clinical practice: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Consent forms play an active role in the consent process with generic, handwritten consent forms (GCF) often the standard across the National Health Service. Increasingly, procedure-specific consent forms (PSCF) are being used as an alternative. However, concerns remain about whether they meet the standard for consent. We therefore conducted a systematic review with the objectives of investigating evidence for PSCF, study methodology and medicolegal criteria. METHODS: This systematic review was prospectively registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023392693) and conducted from 1 January 19

Readability of informed consent forms for whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing.

Whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing (WES, WGS) can generate an unprecedented amount of complex information, making the informed consent (IC) process challenging. The aim of our study was to assess the readability of English IC forms for clinical whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing using the SMOG and Flesch-Kincaid formulas. We analysed 36 forms, most of which were from US providers. The median readability grade levels were 14.75 (the SMOG formula) and 12.2 (the Flesch-Kincaid formula); these values indicate the years of education after which a person would be able to understand a text

[The impact of a verbal consent form on the participation rate in a telephone survey].

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of a consent form on the participation rate in a telephone survey about gambling and money. METHOD: Four different consent forms were tested. The first consent form globally met the academic ethics committee requirements, while the second and third forms excluded some elements. Finally, the fourth form was similar to the introduction generally used by private survey firms. RESULTS: Even when the consent form required by academic ethics committees was shortened, the private firm introduction led to the best participation rate. However, participants who received

Standardising written informed consent forms to improve patient care: a quality improvement project.

Informed consent is a critical component of patient-centred care, yet variability in its delivery can undermine patient understanding, satisfaction and autonomy. In practice, however, the process is often hindered by high clinical workloads, time pressures and the absence of a standardised approach, which can lead to incomplete explanations, variability in practice and reduced patient comprehension. This project aimed to improve patient understanding and satisfaction with bedside procedures by introducing a standardised informed consent process. This study was conducted at Hamad General Hospita

Standardised Request and Contrast Consent Forms to Enhance Clinical Learning in Radiography Education.

INTRODUCTION: The skill of interpreting medical imaging request and contrast consent forms is integral to student learning and assessing clinical preparedness for practice. This study sought to develop standardised Medical Imaging Suite (MIS) forms using publicly available data on these types of medical documentation. The standardised MIS forms can be integrated into the diagnostic radiography curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate students and embedded into practical classes, tutorials, simulations and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) to better prepare students for cl

Looped quality improvement project of consent forms in patients admitted with hip fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Neck of femur (NOF) fractures constitute a significant proportion of the workload of orthopaedic departments, with approximately 65 000 admissions across the UK annually. There are various surgical procedures available to repair NOF fractures and each is associated with numerous intraoperative and perioperative risks. Informed consent is an essential part of the workup when planning to undertake any surgical procedure, whereby the risks and benefits of surgery are discussed with the patient, so they are able to make decisions about their care. It is therefore important that conse

A randomized trial comparing concise and standard consent forms in the START trial.

BACKGROUND: Improving the effectiveness and efficiency of research informed consent is a high priority. Some express concern about longer, more complex, written consent forms creating barriers to participant understanding. A recent meta-analysis concluded that randomized comparisons were needed. METHODS: We conducted a cluster-randomized non-inferiority comparison of a standard versus concise consent form within a multinational trial studying the timing of starting antiretroviral therapy in HIV+ adults (START). Interested sites were randomized to standard or concise consent forms for all indi

Quality of written informed consent forms for electroconvulsive therapy in Australia: a comparative analysis.

OBJECTIVES: We compared the quality of the written informed consent forms for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in Australian jurisdictions. METHOD: For this comparative audit-type study, a checklist was developed to compare informed consent forms from different jurisdictions. The main information sources for consent forms were government health department websites and Google. The directors of clinical services were contacted if a consent form was not available through a web source. RESULTS: Majority of the informed consent forms covered information about ECT, general anaesthesia and alternati

Assessment of a shortened informed consent form for pediatric research: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Inherent to clinical research is the informed consent process, with the informed consent form (ICF), a key component of human participant protections. We wished to examine whether a shortened and simplified ICF, accompanied by an appendix, improved participant understanding of a study compared with a conventional ICF. METHODS: A shortened ICF was developed from an existing conventional ICF for a neonatal study. Either the shortened or conventional ICF was randomly distributed to members of two parental advocacy groups. Participants answered survey questions about the form they rec

Translating the consent form is the tip of the iceberg: using cognitive interviews to assess the barriers to informed consent in South African health facilities.

The increasing digitisation of personal health data has led to an increase in the demand for onward health data. This study sought to develop local language scripts for use in public sector maternity clinics to capture informed consent for onward health data use. The script considered five possible health data uses: 1. Sending of general health information content via mobile phones; 2. Delivery of personalised health information via mobile phones; 3. Use of women's anonymised health data; 4. Use of child's anonymised health data; and 5. Use of data for recontact. Qualitative interviews (n = 54

Evidence-based informed consent forms for total knee arthroplasty and anaesthesia: development and pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Informed consent is a legal and ethical prerequisite for elective procedures such as total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, standard informed consent forms often lack evidence-based content and do not adequately support informed decision-making. The aim was to develop and pilot test an evidence-based informed consent form for TKA. METHODS: We conducted a two-phase study. In Phase 1, we developed an extended, evidence-based informed consent form for TKA, as well as a corresponding form for anaesthesia, based on systematic evidence syntheses, expert reviews, and standards outlined
