Interprovincial food trade and water resources conservation in China.

A spatial mismatch in water and arable land availability results in large virtual water transfers through interprovincial food trade in China. Accurately identifying and measuring water-saving links in interprovincial food trade can help to relieve water resources pressure in main grain-producing areas. We use a multiregional input-output table combined with the CROPWAT model to build China's interprovincial virtual water transfer network embedded in food trade in 2012. Then, water saving and scarce water saving are measured. Both consider the difference in water productivity among provinces,

Conserving water in and applying solar power to haemodialysis: 'green dialysis' through wiser resource utilization.

Natural resources are under worldwide pressure, water and sustainable energy being the paramount issues. Haemodialysis, a water-voracious and energy-hungry healthcare procedure, thoughtlessly wastes water and leaves a heavy carbon footprint. In our service, 100 000 L/week of previously discarded reverse osmosis reject water--water which satisfies all World Health Organisation criteria for potable (drinking) water--no longer drains to waste but is captured for reuse. Reject water from the hospital-based dialysis unit provides autoclave steam for instrument sterilization, ward toilet flushing, j

Socio-hydrological analysis: a new approach in water resources management in western Iran.

Human consumption patterns have a significant impact on the amount of available water. However, the human effect on water resources is perceived to have been poorly studied. For the effective management of water resources, social and hydrological components should be studied. To fill this gap, the aim of this study was to investigate the socio-hydrological system of the Gavshan Dam in western Iran. Therefore, the qualitative method and root cause analysis (RCA) were used to investigate the causes of the imbalance between water consumption and water resources. Root cause analysis was used to in

Enhancing the SWAT model for creating efficient rainwater harvesting and reuse strategies to improve water resources management.

Rain barrels/cisterns are a type of green infrastructure (GI) practice that can help restore urban hydrology. Roof runoff captured and stored by rain barrels/cisterns can serve as a valuable resource for landscape irrigation, which would reduce municipal water usage and decrease runoff that other stormwater infrastructures need to treat. The expected benefits of rainwater harvesting and reuse with rain barrels/cisterns are comprehensive but neither systematically investigated nor well documented. A comprehensive tool is needed to help stakeholders develop efficient strategies to harvest rainwa

Hydrological asymmetry and water stress in Peru: An integrated assessment of resource distribution, anthropogenic pressure, and governance gaps across three drainage basins.

BACKGROUND: Peru presents a paradigmatic case of hydrological asymmetry, where national water abundance (56,887 m 3/capita/year) masks acute regional scarcity. The Pacific basin, hosting 66.4% of the population, possesses only 1.9% of renewable water resources (1,628 m 3/capita/year), falling below the Falkenmark water stress threshold (1,700 m 3/capita/year). Conversely, the Amazon basin holds 97.8% of resources for 30.4% of the population (183,142 m 3/capita/year). This 112.5-fold asymmetry ratio exceeds comparable international cases (Egypt: 49.2; China: 8.0), yet Peru lacks systemic redist

Addressing water scarcity to support climate resilience and human health.

Water scarcity is projected to affect half of the world's population, gradually exacerbated by climate change. This article elaborates from a panel discussion at the 2023 United Nations Water Conference on "Addressing Water Scarcity to Achieve Climate Resilience and Human Health." Understanding and addressing water scarcity goes beyond hydrological water balances to also include societal and economic measures. We consider five categories of health impacts resulting from deteriorating water qualities and quantities: (1) water-related diseases and water for hygiene, (2) malnutrition and water fo

Rationality Criteria for Complex Goal Systems: The case of the EU Water Framework Directive.

We extend a previous list of four rationality criteria for the setting of a single goal to a list of six rationality criteria for the construction of large goal systems, such as those commonly established for sustainability policies. These criteria are applied to the European Union's Water Framework Directive (WFD). For each of the six criteria we find deficiencies that should preferably be redressed in future revisions of the framework. Based on this example, we argue that in the future, complex goal systems should be carefully analysed from the viewpoint of goal-setting rationality before th

A comprehensive framework for the assessment of new end uses in recycled water schemes.

Nowadays, recycled water has provided sufficient flexibility to satisfy short-term freshwater needs and increase the reliability of long-term water supplies in many water scarce areas, which becomes an essential component of integrated water resources management. However, the current applications of recycled water are still quite limited that are mainly associated with non-potable purposes such as irrigation, industrial uses, toilet flushing and car washing. There is a large potential to exploit and develop new end uses of recycled water in both urban and rural areas. This can greatly contribu

Constructing an ecological security pattern for waterfront areas from the perspective of water culture conservation: a case study of the J section of the Beijing-Hangzhou grand canal.

Under rapid urbanization, waterfront space is increasingly encroached upon, disconnecting water cultural heritage protection from ecosystem restoration and undermining urban resilience. Focusing on the J section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, this paper proposes a "culture-ecology" framework to integrate an ecological-cultural security pattern. Five factors-water retention, soil conservation, biodiversity, water environmental capacity and water culture conservation-are coupled to establish a priority evaluation system for ecological protection. Based on patch connectivity and patch size,

Tool for assessment of process importance at the groundwater/surface water interface.

The groundwater/surface water interface (GWSWI) represents an important transition zone between groundwater and surface water environments that potentially changes the nature and flux of contaminants exchanged between the two systems. Identifying dominant and rate-limiting contaminant transformation processes is critically important for estimating contaminant fluxes and compositional changes across the GWSWI. A new, user-friendly, spreadsheet- and Visual Basic-based analytical screening tool that assists in evaluating the dominance of controlling kinetic processes across the GWSWI is presented

Optimizing Rainwater Harvesting Site and Structure Suitability Using Geospatial, Multi-Influencing Factor, and Analytic Hierarchy Process Approaches.

Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is an essential practice for water conservation, improved water resource management, and water-related hazards mitigation in mountainous areas. Selection of a suitable site and an appropriate structure of the RWH facility are vital for improving water availability and agricultural productivity under all circumstances, particularly due to climate change-related hydrological uncertainty. It is challenging to evaluate and analyze RWH sites across diverse conditions worldwide, particularly in remote, inaccessible mountainous areas where these sites have significant impac

Determining the scale of coal mining in an ecologically fragile mining area under the constraint of water resources carrying capacity.

A reasonable mining scale is very important for the development of mining areas. In view of the lack of water resources in arid and semi-arid areas, this paper studies the scale of coal mining in arid and semi-arid areas under the constraint of the water resources carrying capacity (WRCC) with the aim of realizing the conservation mining of ecological environment. From the perspectives of market demand side, production side and the constraint side, a "trinity" decision model was constructed to investigate the main factors influencing the scale of coal mining. By introducing the optimal control

Combining industrial and urban water-reuse concepts for increasing the water resources in water-scarce regions.

Water scarcity is a huge challenge for industrial and urban developments. As such developments are based on a secure water supply, strategies to ensure the required water quantities must be put into effect. In this context, sustainability is becoming an increasingly important factor due to the worsening of pollution and climate change. The integrated industrial-urban water-reuse concept (IU-WA-RE) links gray and green infrastructures by providing reuse water for different infrastructural purposes. Municipal and industrial wastewater is treated separately in different water resource recovery fa

Working toward Improved Chemical Covers for Water Conservation: A Laboratory-scale Assessment of Antievaporative Lipid Films.

The devastating effects of drought are expected to increase as a result of the global climate change. This poses growing challenges related to water conservation and efficient consumption. Improved chemical covers designed to mitigate water evaporation from reservoirs and open water bodies represent a potential countermeasure in water conservation. In this work, we set out to perform a laboratory-scale assessment of the possibility to develop improved chemical covers based on antievaporative lipid films featuring O-acyl-ω-hydroxy-fatty acids, fatty alcohols, wax esters or their combinations. What should we do for water security? A technical review on more yield per water drop.

Water scarcity is a global challenge. A severe gap between water supply and demand will arise. Consequently, a large part of the world could face water shortage issues in the near future. Increasing cultivated areas and rapid population growth will intensify water consumption, which may lead to a "drink or grow" situation in many countries. Promoting more yield per water drop (MYWD) ideology for water secure development is critically important because the agriculture sector is the largest water consumer by 70%. In lower-middle and low-income countries, water use in agriculture ranges from 80-9

Asset deterioration and discolouration in water distribution systems.

Water Distribution Systems function to supply treated water safe for human consumption and complying with increasingly stringent quality regulations. Considered primarily an aesthetic issue, discolouration is the largest cause of customer dissatisfaction associated with distribution system water quality. Pro-active measures to prevent discolouration are sought yet network processes remain insufficiently understood to fully justify and optimise capital or operational strategies to manage discolouration risk. Results are presented from a comprehensive fieldwork programme in UK water distribution

Applying cooperative game theory to develop water management strategies for the restoration of Hour Al-Azim wetland.

The Hour-Al-Azim transboundary wetland, one of Iran's most significant wetlands, is facing desiccation due to a disregard for environmental flow. A significant portion of the wetland has dried up, leading to the emergence of dust storms with detrimental effects on the region. Therefore, the imperative lies in fully restoring the wetland to mitigate the damages caused by dust storms and drought. In this study, considering the agricultural land area in the Karkheh River Basin and estimating the water requirements of the agricultural sector, the allocation scenario that satisfies all stakeholders

Steam sterilisation's energy and water footprint.

Objective The aim of the present study was to quantify hospital steam steriliser resource consumption to provide baseline environmental data and identify possible efficiency gains. We sought to find the amount of steriliser electricity and water used for active cycles and for idling (standby), and the relationship between the electricity and water consumption and the mass and type of items sterilised. Methods We logged a hospital steam steriliser's electricity and water meters every 5min for up to 1 year. We obtained details of all active cycles (standard 134°C and accessory or 'test' cycles),
