Musculoskeletal Injuries Resulting from Use of Hoverboards: Safety Concerns With an Unregulated Consumer Product.

Hoverboards were recently introduced to the US consumer market and experienced rapid popularity. Given the high frequency of musculoskeletal injury with other wheeled recreation devices, we sought to analyze hoverboard injuries in children. A retrospective review of patients with musculoskeletal injury related to hoverboard use was performed at a tertiary care children's hospital. From November 2015 to January 2016, 2.3% of all fractures were related to hoverboards. Common injury mechanisms were fall (79%) and finger entrapment between wheel and wheel-well (10%). The most frequently fractured

Improving the Effectiveness of the Consumer Product Safety System: Australian Law Reform in Asia-Pacific Context.

The Australian government is undertaking public consultations over possible improvements to the 2010 Australian Consumer Law (ACL) regime, including again the idea of adding a European-style general safety provision (GSP). To bolster the case for such reform, Part 2 of this paper analyses 2017-2019 data trends from the OECD Global Recalls Portal for Australia compared with several comparable economies, especially in the Asia-Pacific region where Australia now has most of its trade and investment links. The analysis finds a persistently high per capita recall rate for Australia, compared with s

Triclosan: a critical review of the experimental data and development of margins of safety for consumer products.

Triclosan (2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxy-diphenyl ether) is an antibacterial compound that has been used in consumer products for about 40 years. The tolerability and safety of triclosan has been evaluated in human volunteers with little indication of toxicity or sensitization. Although information in humans from chronic usage of personal care products is not available, triclosan has been extensively studied in laboratory animals. When evaluated in chronic oncogenicity studies in mice, rats, and hamsters, treatment-related tumors were found only in the liver of male and female mice. Application

A Short Critique on the Stance of the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority on Melamine Polymer Formaldehyde Exposures.

In February 2021, the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority came out with their risk assessment on formaldehyde exposure from melamine crockery with bamboo fiber to especially young children. In this short commentary, I will critique their assessment of this type of food-contact material (FCM). The main flaws are at least: (i) absence of a proper valuation of the available principal scientific literature yielding a biased risk assessment; (ii) discounting the endogenous formaldehyde formation that outweighs background exposure substantially; (iii) ad hoc positing of an unjusti

[Violation of Prohibitions and Restrictions When Importing Footwear Products into the EAEU as a Threat to the Health and Safety of Consumers].

The relevance of the chosen topic of the scientific article is due to the fact that due to the introduction of sanctions against the Russian Federation and the legalization of parallel imports by the Government of the Russian Federation, most of the branded goods (including crude products) are sold to the Russian markets through the EAEU countries. Research conducted by Rosaccreditation and independent expert laboratories revealed a high level of counterfeit products among the goods imported in this way, which undoubtedly affects the health of end consumers. Thus, during expert research in rel

Margin of exposure to free formaldehyde in personal care products containing formaldehyde-donor preservatives: Evidence for consumer safety.

Formaldehyde has been classified as carcinogenic to humans by International Agency for Research on Cancer and found in personal care (PC) products containing formaldehyde-donor (FD) preservatives. However, the cancer risk associated with the use of FD-containing PC products has not been well established. Our study provides the quantitative cancer risk assessment of formaldehyde in FD-containing PC products. The carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR) spectroscopy was used in this risk assessment to provide reliable exposure information to formaldehyde in PC products and aqueous solution

Home treadmill injuries in infants and children aged to 5 years: a review of Consumer Product Safety Commission data and an illustrative report of case.

Approximately 8700 injuries from home exercise equipment occur annually in children in the United States. Home treadmills, which have been growing steadily in popularity during the past decade, pose a specific hazard to infants and children aged 5 years or younger, a population at increased risk of injury to the upper extremities (ie, arm, forearm, wrist, hand, and fingers). The authors also provide an illustrative report of case of a 2-year-old boy whose hand injury resulted from a home treadmill. Analysis and frequency reporting of United States Consumer Product Safety Commission data for ho
