Vasopressin deficiency and the modulation of consummatory behavior.

This study examined patterns of consummatory behavior in normal and vasopressin-deficient rats under ad lib and food-restricted conditions. Differing patterns of intake of food, water, sucrose, and saccharin were found in the two groups. During the ad lib period, the normal rats gained more weight and ate significantly more food than vasopressin-deficient rats. The vasopressin-deficient animals consumed significantly more sucrose than normal animals during this period. No significant differences in body weight, food intake, sucrose intake, or saccharin intake were noted during the food-restric

Toxocara canis and lead alter consummatory behavior in mice.

Ingestion of palatable and unpalatable solutions was measured in adult mice in which had been administered the common parasite of the dog, Toxocara canis alone, or in combination with lead. In addition, response to hot plate and susceptibility to electroconvulsive seizure were also measured. Results from the palatability test indicated that either lead or Toxocara may alter the mouse's mode of interacting with its environment. However, the two agents in combination interacted in their effects on consummatory behavior. Results from the hot plate and ECS measures were less clear with respect to

Lateral hypothalamic LEPR neurons drive appetitive but not consummatory behaviors.

Assigning behavioral roles to genetically defined neurons within the lateral hypothalamus (LH) is an ongoing challenge. We demonstrate that a subpopulation of LH GABAergic neurons expressing leptin receptors (LHLEPR) specifically drives appetitive behaviors in mice. Ablation of LH GABAergic neurons (LHVGAT) decreases weight gain and food intake, whereas LHLEPR ablation does not. Appetitive learning in a Pavlovian conditioning paradigm is delayed in LHVGAT-ablated mice but prevented entirely in LHLEPR-ablated mice. Both LHVGAT and LHLEPR neurons bidirectionally modulate reward-related behaviors

The rostral medial frontal cortex is crucial for engagement in consummatory behavior.

The medial frontal cortex (MFC) in rodents emits rhythmic activity that is entrained to the animal's licking cycle during consumption and encodes the value of consumed fluids. These signals are especially prominent in the rostral half of the MFC. This region is located above an orbitofrontal region where mu-opioid receptors regulate intake and reversible inactivation reduces behavioral measures associated with the incentive value and palatability of liquid sucrose. Here, we examined the effects of reversible inactivation and stimulation of mu-opioid receptors in rostral MFC on behavior in an i

Non-consummatory behavior signals predict aversion-resistant alcohol drinking in head-fixed mice.

A key facet of alcohol use disorder is continuing to drink alcohol despite negative consequences (so called "aversion-resistant drinking"). In this study, we sought to assess the degree to which head-fixed mice exhibit aversion-resistant drinking and to leverage behavioral analysis techniques available in head-fixture to relate non-consummatory behaviors to aversion-resistant drinking. We assessed aversion-resistant drinking in head-fixed female and male C57BL/6 J mice. We adulterated 20% (v/v) alcohol with varying concentrations of the bitter tastant quinine to measure the degree to which mic

Biological bases for the integration of appetitive and consummatory grooming behaviors in the cat: a review.

Cats with pontile lesions, frontal neocortical lesions, and thyroidectomized cats display a dissociation of the appetitive and consummatory components of grooming behavior following tactile stimulation of the body surface, an abnormal behavior which waxes and wanes with the seasons of the year. Tryptophan hydroxylase activity and serotonin levels were significantly decreased in the superior colliculi (but not other brain regions) in cats with pontile lesions or frontal neocortical lesions, but not in thyroidectomized cats. Systemic administration of 5-hydroxytryptophan or monoamine oxidase inh

M1 muscarinic receptor activation decreases alcohol consumption via a reduction in consummatory behavior.

Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) have been shown to mediate alcohol consumption and seeking. Both M4 and M5 mAChRs have been highlighted as potential novel treatment targets for alcohol use disorders (AUD). Similarly, M1 mAChRs are expressed throughout reward circuitry, and their signaling has been implicated in cocaine consumption. However, whether the same effects are seen for alcohol consumption, or whether natural reward intake is inadvertently impacted is still unknown. To determine the role of M1 mAChRs in alcohol consumption, we tested operant self-administration of alcohol u

Consummatory behavior and urine production after cerebroventricular injection of vasopressin and vasopressin antiserum.

Vasopressin, or vasopressin antiserum, was injected into a lateral cerebral ventricle of conscious rats. These rats were normally hydrated, cellular dehydrated (NaCl loading) or hypovolemic (polyethylene glycol model). Elevation or reduction of vasopressin in cerebrospinal fluid produced no consistent change in consummatory behavior, urine volume or sodium and potassium excretion. These results show vasopressin in cerebrospinal fluid not to be an absolute requirement for maintenance of hydration or for response to acute volume and osmotic stimuli.

Dissociating the incubation of appetitive and consummatory behavior in a model of oral cocaine self-administration.

Cocaine use disorder remains a persistent public health dilemma that currently lacks effective treatment strategies. One key impediment to successful treatment outcomes is increased drug craving that occurs over the course of abstinence and subsequent relapse to drug use. This phenomenon, known as the incubation of drug craving, has been modeled extensively in rodent models of intravenous drug self-administration. The design of most intravenous self-administration studies examining the incubation effect precludes disentangling appetitive and consummatory behaviors as drug seeking (appetitive)

Hippocampal Sharp-Wave Ripples Decrease during Physical Actions Including Consummatory Behavior in Immobile Rodents.

Hippocampal sharp-wave ripples (SWRs) are intermittent, fast synchronous oscillations that play a pivotal role in memory formation. It has been well established that SWRs occur during "consummatory behaviors," e.g., eating or drinking a reward for correct action. However, most of typical behavioral experiments using freely moving rodents have not rigorously distinguished between the act of eating/drinking (regardless of consummation or consumption) from stopping locomotion (immobility). Therefore, in this study, we investigated the occurrence of SWRs during a reward-seeking action and subseque

Effects of dopamine agonists on appetitive and consummatory male sexual behavior in Japanese quail.

The effects of pharmacological manipulations of dopaminergic transmission on appetitive and consummatory aspects of male sexual behavior were investigated in castrated male Japanese quail treated with exogenous testosterone. Appetitive male sexual behavior was assessed by measuring a learned social proximity response and consummatory behavior was assessed by measuring copulatory behavior per se. The nonselective dopamine receptor agonist, apomorphine, inhibited in a dose-dependent manner both components of male sexual behavior. Two indirect dopamine agonists were also tested. Nomifensine, a do

Lactational performance, consummatory behavior, and suppression of estrous cyclicity in rats suckling underfed pups.

The role of pups' appetite in the regulation of maternal consummatory behavior (food intake of nursing mothers), lactational performance and postpartum diestrus was studied over a period of 45 days postpartum in rats chronically exposed to either underfed or normally fed pups. Experimental rats (n = 10) daily received 5 pups, 4-10-days-old, that had been deprived of food for the preceding 24 h while under the care of nonlactating foster mothers. Control rats (n = 10) received normally fed pups obtained daily from lactating foster mothers. Throughout the experimental period, the daily milk yiel

Elevated dopamine alters consummatory pattern generation and increases behavioral variability during learning.

The role of dopamine in controlling behavior remains poorly understood. In this study we examined licking behavior in an established hyperdopaminergic mouse model-dopamine transporter knockout (DAT KO) mice. DAT KO mice showed higher rates of licking, which is due to increased perseveration of licking in a bout. By contrast, they showed increased individual lick durations, and reduced inter-lick intervals. During extinction, both KO and control mice transiently increased variability in lick pattern generation while reducing licking rate, yet they showed very different behavioral patterns. Cont

Exposure of sexually inactive males to estrogenized females increased the investigative and consummatory sexual behavior.

Two trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of diverse socio-sexual cues upon male sexual behavior and the reproductive performance of anestrous does (AD). Trials were conducted in northern Mexico (26°N) during the natural anestrous season (Feb-Mar) with crossbred dairy bucks. In Experiment 1, sexually inactive bucks (SIB, n=12) were randomly allotted to three groups, four males/group: a) DEE 9novelty stimulation) - daily exchange of estrogenized females (EF) 12&12h, b) NEE (no novelty stimulation) - no-exchange of EF, 24h, or c) CON (saline-treated_ -daily exchange of AF 12&12h. Electrophysiological responses to appetitive and consummatory behavior in the rostral nucleus tractus solitarius in awake, unrestrained rats.

As the intermediate nucleus in the brainstem receiving information from the tongue and transmitting information upstream, the rostral portion of the nucleus tractus solitarius (rNTS) is most often described as a "taste relay". Although recent evidence implicates the NTS in a broad neural circuit involved in regulating ingestion, there is little information about how cells in this structure respond when an animal is eating solid food. Effects of progesterone treatment during adulthood on consummatory and motivational aspects of sexual behavior in male rats.

In males of a variety of species, administration of progesterone during adulthood has been shown to decrease the expression of consummatory sexual behaviors and androgen receptors. However, it remains to be determined if the progesterone-induced decrease in androgen-receptor signaling and consummatory sexual behaviors correspond with less of a preference for a sexually receptive female relative to another male, a behavioral phenotype indicative of sexual motivation. Consistent with the effects of progesterone reported in males of other species, progesterone-treated rats, relative to vehicle-tr

Dopaminergic modulation of visual responses in toads. I. Apomorphine-induced effects on visually directed appetitive and consummatory prey-catching behavior.

This study confirms for a phylogenetically basal terrestrial vertebrate that dopaminergic modulations interfere with the visually directed appetitive and consummatory feeding behaviors orienting and snapping, respectively. (1) In common toads Bufo bufo, intralymphatic administration of the dopamine D2/D1-receptor agonist apomorphine led to a dose-dependent facilitation of prey-snapping in response to moving objects. The snapping activity reached a maximum 15-35 min after apomorphine injection. (2) To changes in configurational stimulus features, the basic pattern of discrimination was maintain

The consummatory and motivational behaviors for natural rewards following long-term withdrawal from morphine: no anhedonia but persistent maladaptive behaviors for high-value rewards.

RATIONALE: The negative affective state, e.g., anhedonia, emerges after abstinence from abused drugs may be linked to the motivational processes of drug craving and relapse. Although anhedonia diminishes over time with drug abstinence, it is not yet rather explicit whether anhedonia exists or not following protracted withdrawal. OBJECTIVES: The behavioral responses to natural rewards were examined after 2 to 3 weeks withdrawal from morphine. Male rats were pretreated with either a binge-like morphine paradigm or daily saline injection for 5 days. The consummatory and motivational behaviors fo
