Contingent negative variation in childhood migraine.

Adult migraineurs without aura have an increased amplitude of the Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) between attacks. Given the potential diagnostic importance of this finding and the difficulties associated with diagnosing migraine in childhood it seemed important to assess CNV in children suffering from this disorder. Ninety-seven children aged between 8 and 14 years were recruited. Forty-two suffered from migraine, 34 from tension-type headache. Twenty-one healthy controls were also studied. CNV was recorded from Fz, Cz and Pz referenced to linked earlobes during 20 trials consisting of tw

Contingent negative variation and personality in depression.

Contingent negative variation (CNV) has been applied in depression with controversial results. A major source for these controversial results could result from the diversity of depressed patients included in the different studies. Supporting this assumption, impulsivity, blunted affect and suicidal behavior significantly influence CNV amplitude. However, no data are available on the possible influences of personality of depressed patients on CNV. Since personality is related to CNV in normal subjects, the aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between CNV and personality

Contingent negative variation response in chronic pain patients.

The present study assesses central processing of subjective appraisal, expectancy, orientation and reaction time as indexed by Contingent Negative variation (CNV) response in chronic pain patients. Waves N1, P3 and CNV were recorded during a CNV paradigm in a simple reaction time task with a constant interstimulus interval (ISI) of 1 sec. CNV was measured from CZ x FZ in controls and chronic pain patients suffering from cervical spondylosis and low backache due to sciatica. Duration of pain was 5 to 10 years and intensity varied from moderate to severe as adjudged by Visual Analogue Scale. CNV

Contingent negative variation--findings and perspectives in migraine.

Contingent negative variation (CNV) is a negative cerebral potential which is related to attention and arousal. CNV occurs during an experimental situation in which stimuli and responses are serially organized. Between attacks migraine patients have on average higher negative amplitudes compared to healthy controls or patients with tension-type headache. Successful treatment with beta-blocking agents decreases CNV amplitudes. In spite of encouraging findings in neurological disorders, CNV is not widely used. In this review some possible reasons for this are pointed out.

[Contingent negative variation in normal and dyslexic children].

The most prominent ERP to occur during intervals of preparation and anticipation is the contingent negative variation (CNV) or expectancy wave. The purpose of the study was to distinguish the characteristics of the CNV in a group of children with reading disabilities or dyslexia, and to compare it with a group of normal readers. Nine right handed boys aged between 9 and 13 years with reading disabilities were studied. The children were matched with a group of nine normal readers. Four derivations were used: F3, Cz, P3, and O1, with reference to linked ears. Data were analyzed using multivariat

[Olfactory stimulation and contingent negative variation (CNV) (author's transl)].

In addition to olfactory evoked responses (Fig. 1a) the vertex-negative voltage shift was registered in 20 normal adults. Fig. 2 shows this potential for an olfactory indicative stimulus followed by a tone burst or flash sequence, which are stopped by the test person's manual reaction. In Fig. 3 two alternating odorous stimuli are presented, one of which is followed by the tone. The selective expectancy wave is followed by the tone. The selective expectancy wave is only built up by the marked olfactory stimulus. For the first time CNV can be used as a clinical investigation tool to confirm cen

Contingent negative variation in patients with chronic daily headache.

The aim of this study was the investigation of amplitude and habituation of contingent negative variation (CNV) in migraine and chronic daily headache (CDH) patients in order to describe possible neurophysiological features responsible for the clinical transformation and worsening of the headache. Fifteen females suffering from migraine without aura and 15 females diagnosed with CDH evolved from migraine without aura with interparoxysmal chronic tension-type headache (transformed migraine), underwent CNV recording. Fifteen healthy females matched for age served as controls. CNV was obtained fr

Contingent negative variation in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

The Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) may measure arousal and attention, and is affected by various dopaminergic disorders. We recorded CNVs in 12 patients fulfilling diagnostic criteria of Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (TS). Ten of 12 patients were male, 10 had attention deficit disorder (ADD), and 3 also had obsessions and compulsions (OCD). Medication had been stopped or TS treatment not yet started. TS patients had higher CNV amplitude and more frequent postimperative negative variation than controls. CNV2 was enhanced in all TS patients, while CNV1 was attenuated in TS patients with AD

Contingent negative variation: components and scalp distribution in psychiatric patients.

Components and scalp distribution of the contingent negative variation (CNV) were studied in various diagnostic groups (DSM III): normals, opioid-dependent subjects, alcohol-dependent subjects, neurotics, schizotypics, nonschizophrenic psychotics, and schizophrenics. A principal components analysis revealed four late slow waves: early and late CNV and early and late postimperative negative variation (PINV) waves. The late CNV wave appeared a better indicator of psychopathology than early CNV or PINV, but the amplitude difference between central and frontal CNV seems at least of equal importanc

Contingent negative variation and movement-related cortical potentials in parkinsonism.

The contingent negative variation (CNV) and movement-related cortical potentials (MRCPs) were recorded in 10 cases of Parkinson's disease, 10 cases of vascular parkinsonism and 10 age-matched healthy controls. The amplitude of the early CNV was smaller in the Parkinson's disease group and the vascular parkinsonism group than in the healthy control group. The latencies of Bereitschaftspotential (BP) and negative slope (NS') were longer and the amplitude of BP was smaller in the Parkinson's disease group and the vascular parkinsonism group than in the healthy control group. These abnormalities i

Contingent negative variation in acute trauma patients: A prospective exploratory study.

It is still unclear why some individuals completely recover after an acute trauma and others develop a long-lasting post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study investigates whether the contingent negative variation (CNV) - a slow negative event-related potential - may be associated with the occurrence of PTSD after acute trauma. CNV (auditory 2-stimulus reaction time paradigm) was recorded within one month as well as 6 months after an acute trauma (dangerous or grave physical injuries, witnessing of attempted suicide or murder, robbery, extortion, accidents, heavy illness, death or loss

Contingent negative variation in adults with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Three deflections or waves of the Contingent Negative Variation (CNV): the Slow Negative Wave (SNW), the Terminal CNV (TCNV) and the Post Imperative Negative Variation (PINV) were studied in 18 adults with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and in 15 controls. The patients showed a reduced SNW, a normal TCNV and an increased PINV. Moreover, at the right parietal region the patients demonstrated a decreased SNW, TCNV and PINV. The results are discussed in relation to behavioral and neuropsychological disturbances found in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Pain, anxiety, and contingent negative variation: a clinical and pharmacological study.

Contingent negative variation (CNV) behavior was studied in 16 volunteers who were suffering from spontaneous recurrent pain syndromes (idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, classic migraine). The subjects were divided into two groups, "more anxious" and "less anxious," based on psychometric tests (MMPI and STAI X2). The CNV recordings were carried out, respectively, in basal resting state, during an episode of pain, while under anxiolytic treatment, and lastly, during an episode of pain while under anxiolytic therapy. CNV voltage decrease and frequent appearance of postimperative negative variatio

Contingent negative variation in the fetal alcohol syndrome: a preliminary report.

This study investigates contingent negative variation (CNV) in ten children diagnosed as fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and ten control children whose mothers reported only infrequent drinking during pregnancy. Cortical potentials were obtained using a procedure similar to Cohen's (1976) design. Stimuli consisted of a randomly presented flash followed 1.5 sec later by a tone. Sixty-four trials were presented with tone offset under experimenter control. For the next 128 trials, the subject pushed a button to turn off the tone. The EEG was recorded from Cz, P3, and P4 referred to linked earlobes.

Contingent negative variations associated with command swallowing in humans.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the role of the cerebral cortex in the swallowing movement, the difference between the waveforms of contingent negative variation (CNV) for the command swallowing and movement-related cortical potential (MRCP) obtained during the volitional swallowing task in humans was investigated. METHODS: Subjects were instructed to swallow their saliva as quickly as possible in response to a sound signal 4s after the onset of a self-paced breath holding in the command swallowing task or to swallow it while holding their breath for 4s in the volitional swallowing task. RESULTS: CNV

The role of cerebellum in timing processing: A contingent negative variation study.

Time management is an important aspect of human behaviour and cognition. Several brain regions are thought to be involved in motor timing and time estimation tasks. However, subcortical regions such as the basal nuclei and cerebellum seem to play a role in timing control. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the cerebellum in temporal processing. For this purpose, we transitorily inhibited cerebellar activity by means of cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and studied the effects of this inhibition on contingent negative variation (CNV) parameters elicited d

Abnormal Contingent Negative Variation Drifts During Facial Expression Judgment in Schizophrenia Patients.

Schizophrenia patients often show impaired facial expression recognition, which leads to difficulties in adaptation to daily life. However, it remains unclear whether the deficit is at the perceptual or higher cognitive level of facial emotion processing. Recent studies have shown that earlier face-evoked event-related potential (ERP) components such as N170 and P100 can effectively distinguish schizophrenia patients from healthy controls; however, findings for later waveforms are ambiguous. To clarify this point, in this study we compared electroencephalographic signals in schizophrenia patie

Physiological study of cervical dystonia. Task-specific abnormality in contingent negative variation.

To investigate the pathophysiology of dystonia, we recorded contingent negative variation (CNV) in 12 patients with cervical dystonia and in 12 age-matched normal subjects. In a simple reaction time paradigm, the subjects were given a pair of a warning stimulus and a subsequent stimulus that triggered head rotation to either side or extension of the fingers. In normal subjects, CNVs for head rotation were not affected by neck muscle pre-activation simulating torticollis, and were always symmetrical with equally high amplitudes over the frontal and central leads. By contrast, CNVs for finger mo
