PURPOSE: To characterize the differences and similarities among college freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors regarding their sexual behavior including contraception choices and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk.
METHODS: A 41-item sexual behavior questionnaire designed for this study was administered to a convenience sample (N = 797) of a college population.
RESULTS: Levels of sexual activity were found to be comparable to other college-based surveys. Notable trends included an increased level of oral contraceptive use among partners reported by seniors, as compared to freshmen,

A wide range of factors influence adolescents' contraceptive behaviors, from personal characteristics to family context to social support to knowledge about and access to contraception. Improving knowledge about contraception and counseling about successful contraceptive use can be helpful in decreasing the remarkably high US rates of adolescent pregnancy. Encouraging the postponement of sexual activity until an individual adolescent is developmentally capable of participating in a mature, healthy, mutually respectful relationship that incorporates effective contraception clearly is a goal tha

Recently, concern has been expressed on a possible association between the use of oral contraceptive pills (OCs) and an increased risk of contracting the HIV infection. As a consequence it has been postulated that a low prevalence of condom use due to widespread utilization of oral contraceptive pills would result in an acceleration of the spread of AIDS. The International Committee for Research in Reproduction (ICRR) a group of eleven experts in the field of gynecology, endocrinology and contraception, wishes to comment on the concerns raised about OC use and AIDS.

In this article, the relationship between stated intention to use contraceptives and subsequent use during a three-year period in Morocco is examined. Longitudinal data are drawn from two Demographic and Health Surveys: the 1992 Morocco DHS and the 1995 Morocco Panel Survey. Reported contraceptive intentions in 1992 have a strong predictive effect on subsequent contraceptive use even after controlling for other characteristics of respondents, and the strength of the effect is second only to that of previous contraceptive use. Women who in 1992 said they intended to use contraceptives in the fu

OBJECTIVE: To estimate whether providing no-cost contraception is associated with the number of sexual partners and frequency of intercourse over time.
METHODS: This was an analysis of the Contraceptive CHOICE Project, a prospective cohort study of 9,256 adolescents and women at risk for unintended pregnancy. Participants were provided reversible contraception of their choice at no cost and were followed-up with telephone interviews at 6 and 12 months. We examined the number of male sexual partners and coital frequency reported during the previous 30 days at baseline compared with 6-month and

STUDY OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: Unintended pregnancy rates in the United States remain high among adolescents. Emergency contraception (EC) provides the only option for pregnancy prevention after unprotected sex. To better define the population of adolescents who request and use EC pills, we performed a post hoc analysis of an over-the-counter simulation study of EC pills.
SETTING: Teen reproductive health clinics in 5 cities.
PARTICIPANTS: Adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 years who requested EC.
INTERVENTIONS: Single-tablet levonorgestrel 1.5 mg.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We calculated

This research utilizes a social learning theory perspective to investigate the relationships among teenage women's Contraceptive Self-Efficacy (CSE), reproductive and contraceptive knowledge (RCK), and contraceptive behavior. It was posited that CSE might influence the way knowledge translates into behavior because individuals who feel they can and should use contraceptives may be more receptive to information. A secondary line of analysis examined the individual responses on the RCK to ascertain common knowledge and myths. The 521 respondents were from two diverse samples of teenage women att

Because human same-sex sexual behavior (SSB) is heritable and leads to fewer offspring, it is puzzling why SSB-associated alleles have not been selectively purged. Current evidence supports the antagonistic pleiotropy hypothesis that SSB-associated alleles benefit individuals exclusively performing opposite-sex sexual behavior by increasing their number of sexual partners and consequently their number of offspring. However, here we show that having more sexual partners no longer predicts more offspring since the availability of oral contraceptives in the 1960s and that SSB is now negatively ge

This study examines contraceptive delivery characteristics and their association with contraceptive behavior. Data were collected in telephone interviews from a national sample of 1057 women who were using female contraceptives. The overwhelming majority of the sample obtained contraceptive services from gynecologists and other physician specialists and were seen in private facilities. Whereas nearly half of the providers recommended use of specific methods, only one-fourth discouraged use of particular methods. The pill was both the most frequently recommended and most commonly discouraged me

Women with psychologic disturbances of depression, anxiety, or thought disorganization pose a special management problem when providing a safe and effective means of contraception. The difficulty is compounded by the fact that many mentally disturbed women also abuse drugs. Therefore, providing contraception to the many types of behaviorally disturbed women requires the full range of contraceptive options and protection from sexually transmitted diseases. When compliance can be assured, oral contraceptives are the preferred method. When compliance is questionable, progestin implants or injecti

Structural interviews conducted with 532 female clients of a teen contraceptive clinic revealed a moderate level of coital activity i(in terms of both frequency of intercourse and number of partners) which typically began at age 15. Prior use of contraception was sporadic and almost exclusively confined to nonprescription methods. Primary reasons for nonuse of birth control included fear of lessening the pleasure of intercourse and lack of access to contraception. The data indicate that a combination of comprehensive sex education and ready access to birth control is necessary to prevent unint

BACKGROUND: Women with epilepsy experience more pregnancy-related risks than do their healthy peers. Guidelines recommend highly effective contraception. However, their contraceptive practices remain unknown.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire study among reproductive-age women (18-44 years) with epilepsy presenting for routine, outpatient visits to an urban, academic medical center. Our questionnaire, in English or Spanish, included demographic characteristics, reproductive history, antiepileptic drug use, sexual behavior and contraception.
RESULTS: Participants had

Half of all pregnancies in the USA are unintended, suggesting a high incidence of either improper or nonuse of contraceptives. Emergency birth control (EBC) provides individuals with additional insurance against unplanned pregnancy in the presence of contraception failure. This study is the first to estimate the impact of switching EBC from prescription to nonprescription status in the USA on abortions and risky sexual behavior as measured by STD rates. Utilizing state-level variation in access to EBC, we find that providing individuals with over-the-counter access to EBC leads to increase STD

Using an anonymous questionnaire, the authors assessed the sexual and contraceptive behaviour of 130 applicants for induced abortions and 330 applicants for hormonal contraception. Between the two groups these main differences were found: applicants for abortion used less frequently effective contraception and used more frequently unreliable contraceptive methods. This difference was obvious during the first intercourse as well as during later life. The use of contraception in this group is more limited also as compared with the nationwide average. In the case-history of applicants for abortio
