This paper deals with the findings of the World Fertility Survey (WFS) and Contraceptive Prevalence Surveys (CPSs) in five areas of common interest: fertility, contraceptive use, measuring the effect of the availability of contraceptives on levels of use, the unmet need for family planning services, and breastfeeding. The comparisons have several implications for those designing surveys of fertility and family planning in developing countries, among them, that women should be asked for the dates of at least their last two births (not just the last birth as in the CPSs) in order to ensure accur

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2006eng
High parity, early age at first full-term pregnancy (FTP), and long-term oral contraceptive (OC) use increase cervical cancer risk, but it is unclear whether these variables are also associated with increased risk of acquisition and persistence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, the main cause of cervical cancer. Information on reproductive and menstrual characteristics and OC use were collected from 14 areas worldwide, among population-based, age-stratified random samples of women aged 15 years or older. HPV testing was done using PCR-based enzyme immunoassay. Unconditional logistic reg

BACKGROUND: The Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) initiative, launched at the 2012 London Summit on Family Planning, aims to enable 120 million additional women to use modern contraceptive methods by 2020 in the world's 69 poorest countries. It will require almost doubling the pre-2012 annual growth rate of modern contraceptive prevalence rates from an estimated 0·7 to 1·4 percentage points to achieve the goal. We examined the post-Summit trends in modern contraceptive prevalence rates in nine settings in eight sub-Saharan African countries (Burkina Faso; Kinshasa, DR Congo; Ethiopia; Ghana; Kenya

UNLABELLED: One of the most significant global public health concerns for women of reproductive age is the unmet need for modern contraceptives. The goal of increasing the use of modern contraceptives is to lower mother and child mortality and morbidity. Since East African nations are part of sub-Saharan Africa, a region primarily composed of low-income countries, they face significant challenges in accessing modern contraceptives due to limited healthcare infrastructure, economic constraints, and socio-cultural barriers. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence and factor

Hormonal contraceptive (HC) use is common among servicewomen and has been discussed in relation to health, performance, and operational readiness. No systematic data exist on HC prevalence among German servicewomen. This study analyzes contraceptive practices and motivations for contraceptive choice in German servicewomen. A nationwide, cross-sectional online survey was conducted among female members of the German Armed Forces. Recruitment occurred via military institutions and a digital flyer. The anonymous questionnaire (40 items, 10-15 min) assessed demographic characteristics and contracep

Family planning and contraceptive utilization can have significant effects in reducing unplanned pregnancies and improving maternal and child health indicators. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study analyzing survey response data within six sub-locations of Migori County, Kenya in 2018 and 2019. We utilize this survey data to estimate both the prevalence of contraceptive uptake and unwanted pregnancies in the study populations, and to examine the potential role that different factors play in meeting related family planning targets. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and multi

Within Africa, maternal mortality remains a concern that can be prevented and addressed. Among the various African countries, Nigeria has one of the highest mortality rates, particularly in a context where the population continues to rise. The relationship between contraceptive usage among married Nigerian women and low socioeconomic development contributes to another concerning public health issue- performing unskilled abortions. This cross-sectional study examines how seven (7) key social determinants of health impact the usage of contraceptive methods among Nigerian women ages 15-24. Data w

BACKGROUND: Contraceptive discontinuation for reasons other than the desire for pregnancy is associated with mistimed and unwanted pregnancies, unwanted births and unsafe abortions which has increased risks of maternal morbidity and mortality. However, research on the identification of factors that are associated with contraceptive discontinuation in Ethiopia is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of contraceptive discontinuation and associated factors among reproductive-age women in Ethiopia, using recent national survey data.

OBJECTIVES: To describe oral contraceptive (OC) use, its determinants and use-associated health correlates from 1984 to 1999 in Germany.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional comparison was performed for socioeconomic factors, personal lifestyle and use-associated health correlates between 1862 OC users and 2625 age-matched nonusers identified from five German National Health Surveys. Regression models were used to obtain the determinants of OC use.
RESULTS: While in women aged 25-49 years OC use remained nearly constant in the western part of Germany from 1984 to 1999 (17.3-20.1%), it declined grea

BACKGROUND: Contraceptive use is a key indicator of improving the health and well-being of women, mothers and their families, preventing unwanted pregnancies, and reducing maternal and child mortalities. Despite a lot of investments from the Government of Guinea to improve contraceptive use, studies reveal that contraceptive use still remains low in Guinea. However, the intention to use contraceptives in Guinea has not been well examined. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the factors associated with the intention to use contraceptives among women of reproductive age in Guinea.

OBJECTIVE: Contraception constitutes a vital aspect of sexual and reproductive healthcare. However, the high prevalence of non-use has become a great public health concern globally. This study examined the intention to use contraceptives and its associated factors among women of reproductive age who were not using any method in Liberia.
DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional population-based study was conducted. We used data from the 2019-2020 Liberia Demographic and Health Survey. The research framework used the theory of planned behaviour to identify the factors that influence women's intent

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence as to whether the use of oral contraceptives(OC) during the fertile years affects the development of postmenopausal hypertension. This study aimed to evaluate the association between past use of OC and development of hypertension in postmenopausal women.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted using data from the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of postmenopausal women. Subjects were classified into three groups based on past OC use duration: nonusers, short-term users(0-30 months), and long-term users(≥ 30 months).

BACKGROUND: The rise in contraceptive use has largely been driven by short-acting methods of contraception, despite the high effectiveness of long-acting reversible contraceptives. Several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have made important progress increasing the use of modern contraceptives, but important inequalities remain. We assessed the prevalence and demand for modern contraceptive use in Latin America and the Caribbean with data from national health surveys.
METHODS: Our data sources included demographic and health surveys, multiple indicator cluster surveys, and reprodu

"This paper presents an empirical relationship between contraceptive prevalence and fertility [in Bangladesh]. It also shows how much the level of contraceptive practice is to be raised to reach a targeted level of fertility on the assumption that all other intermediate variables that influence the fertility remain constant. Regression analysis has been used to measure the relationship. A formula derived from Bongaarts's model is used to find the level of contraceptive practice required to reach a targeted fertility." Data are from a variety of sources, including four contraceptive prevalence

CONTEXT: Increased use of contraceptives in Malawi has not translated into a commensurate reduction in fertility, but the reason is unknown. Insight into contraceptive switching and discontinuation may shed light on this conundrum and on whether the commonly used modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR) is the best indicator of family planning program performance.
METHODS: A one-year prospective longitudinal data set was created from patient-held family planning cards of 4,678 reproductive-age women living in a demographic surveillance site in rural northern Malawi. Contraceptive service d

BACKGROUND: In China, contraception is the most commonly used practice adopted by couples seeking to limit their number of children and to determine the time interval between births. Since 1980, the implementation of mandatory contraceptive strategy has reduced the fertility rate. Using large-scale data from national statistics and nationally representative sample surveys, the current study aims to assess Chinese trends in contraceptive use and determinants of choice from 1980 to 2010 among married women and men aged 20-49 years.
