Contrast sensitivity in dyslexia.

Contrast sensitivity was determined for dyslexic and normal readers. When testing with temporally ramped (i.e. stimuli with gradual temporal onsets and offsets) gratings of 0.6, 4.0, and 12.0 cycles/deg, we found no difference in contrast sensitivity between dyslexic readers and controls. Using 12.0 cycles/deg gratings with transient (i.e. abrupt) onsets and offsets, we found that dyslexic individuals had, compared to controls, markedly inferior contrast sensitivity at the shortest stimulus durations (i.e. 17, 34, and 102 ms). This deficit may reflect more sluggish temporal summation. There wa

Contrast sensitivity after epikeratophakia.

Epikeratophakia is a rapidly evolving surgical procedure for the refractive correction of aphakia. Even when Snellen acuity after epikeratophakia is normal, patients often report a subjective degradation of the visual image through the surgically corrected eye. To further define visual performance in the patient with optically successful epikeratophakia, we examined contrast sensitivity in two patients surgically corrected for monocular aphakia. Contrast thresholds were measured over a range of spatial frequencies using both computer-generated sinusoidal gratings and a commercially available w

Neural contrast sensitivity calculated from measured total contrast sensitivity and modulation transfer function.

PURPOSE: To test the feasibility of calculating neural contrast sensitivity function (neural CSF) from conventionally measured total contrast sensitivity function (total CSF) and measured modulation transfer function (MTF). Neural CSF considers the retina and the brain, whereas total CSF considers the optical eye media, the retina and the brain together. METHODS: We studied three groups comprising nine eyes each: one group with normal ocular optics but retinal alterations (mild diabetic retinopathy), one with altered ocular optics and normal retina (keratoconus), and a normal control group.

Assessing the contrast sensitivity function in myopic parafovea: A quick contrast sensitivity functions study.

PURPOSE: Compare peripheral contrast sensitivity functions (CSF) between myopes and emmetropes to reveal potential myogenic risks during emmetropization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This observational, cross-sectional, non-consecutive case study included data from 19 myopes (23.42 ± 4.03 years old) and 12 emmetropes (22.93 ± 2.91 years old) who underwent central and peripheral quick CSF (qCSF) measurements. Summary CSF metrics including the cut-off spatial frequency (cut-off SF), area under log CSF (AULCSF), low-, intermediate-, and high-spatial-frequency AULCSFs (l-, i-, and h-SF AULCSFs), and lo

Assessment of central and peripheral contrast sensitivity in myopes using Spaeth/Richman contrast sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Assessing central and peripheral contrast sensitivity (CS) in myopic patients with varying degrees of refractive error using Spaeth/Richman contrast sensitivity test (SPARCS) and compared it with emmetropic individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CS of 50 consecutive myopic individuals of varying severity was matched with emmetropes using an online CS test, SPARCS, and Pelli-Robson test. Group comparisons for continuously distributed data were made using analysis of variance (ANOVA) when comparing the groups. A post hoc analysis was also done to compare pairs of each group. Effect of laser peripheral iridotomy on contrast sensitivity using Spaeth/Richman Contrast Sensitivity test.

BACKGROUND: Laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) is the current standard of care for primary angle-closure glaucoma. The existing literature lacks evidence regarding the effects of LPI on contrast sensitivity (CS) after the procedure. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates central and peripheral CS in patients undergoing LPI using the computer-based, Spaeth/Richman Contrast Sensitivity (SPARCS) test. METHODS: We performed a pilot, prospective, interventional cohort study including 30 patients of primary angle-closure suspect (PACS) or primary angle closure (PAC) in both eyes. LPI was performed after a

Neuroanatomical substrates underlying contrast sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Contrast sensitivity (CS), a measurement of the ability to discriminate an object from its background, is an essential domain of visual functions. Eye aging or diseases are usually responsible for CS decline or impairment. However, whether neuroanatomical substrates are underlying CS is mostly unknown. METHODS: High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging data of 100 healthy young subjects from the Human Connectome Project (HCP) dataset were used to calculate gray matter volume (GMV). CS was assessed using the Mars Contrast Sensitivity Test. A multiple regression analysis was used t

[Multidisciplinary use of contrast sensitivity].

BACKGROUND: Contrast sensitivity (CS) gives information about quality of different spatial frequency sent from sensory cells to the brain cortex through different pathways. METHODS AND RESULTS: From the age of 6 to 10 years average CS threshold was defined for each frequency. 3c/deg=1,82 (SD 0,13), 6 c/deg=2,04 (SD 0,14), 12 c/deg=1,74 (SD 0,15), 18 c/deg=l,29 (SD 0,11). In the age between 11 and 19 years following values were determined: 3c/deg=1,92 (SD 0,09), 6 c/deg=2,19 (SD 0,12), 12 c/deg=1,89 (SD 0,10), 18 c/deg=1,42 (SD 0,12). There was no significant difference between each frequency

Contrast sensitivity in albinotic patients.

Vertical and horizontal grating contrast sensitivity functions (CSF) were measured on eight albinotic patients. Several of these patients also had CSF measurements performed through their telescopic aids. For all the patients, the horizontal grating CSF was more sensitive than the vertical grafting CSF. Although there are many pathological problems that could result in this sensitivity difference (high astigmatism, neural modification, etc.), we propose that in this case, the nystagmoid eye movements are the main causative factor. Through the telescopic aid, the CSF resolution acuity and peak

Contrast sensitivity in asymmetric glaucoma.

We measured central contrast sensitivity in both eyes of 27 patients with asymmetric glaucomatous visual field loss or optic disc cupping. In 15 patients contrast sensitivity was less in the eye that by perimetry or ophthalmoscopy was the more severely damaged. In 10 patients contrast sensitivity was the same in the two eyes. In two patients, it was impaired more in the eye with the normal visual field. However, the latter two patients had ophthalmoscopic evidence of optic nerve damage (disc hemorrhage or large cup) in the eye with the lower contrast sensitivity, even though the visual field w

[Spatial contrast sensitivity in multiple sclerosis].

Spatial contrast sensitivity was measured in 110 patients with multiple sclerosis (definite = 72, probable = 22, possible = 16) as part of a routine evaluation in a neuro-ophthalmological clinic. Results were compared with those of 37 normal controls matched for age. The test was abnormal in 71 p. 100 of patients. Contrast sensitivity was attenuated for 97 p. 100 of the eyes with optic neuritis and visual acuity drop, for 60 p. 100 of the eyes with recovered optic neuritis and for 36 p. 100 of the non affected eyes in the cases of unilateral optic neuritis. Fechner's paradox in binocular contrast sensitivity.

It is generally accepted that binocular spatial contrast sensitivity in normal observers is higher than monocular sensitivity by some 42% across all spatial frequencies, an amount predictable on the basis of neural summation of the two monocular responses. Such summation predicts that a reduction of sensitivity in one eye would result in a fall in binocular sensitivity to a level approaching, but never lower than, that of the other eye. We present evidence that reduction in monocular sensitivity caused by reduced luminance can, in some subjects, lower binocular sensitivity to a level below tha

Contrast sensitivity in visually impaired children.

Spatial contrast sensitivity may decrease differently at different spatial frequencies when vision is impaired. Patients with central acidoma may have normal or decreased sensitivity at low spatial frequencies, their Snellen acuity often is lower than grating acuity estimated on the basis of contrast sensitivity values. In retinitis pigmentosa contrast sensitivity may decrease at the low spatial frequencies already in the early teens. Because the ability to discern low contrasts is important in daily living, spatial contrast sensitivity measurements should become a part of clinical evaluation

Contrast Sensitivity Abnormalities in Deaf Individuals.

PURPOSE: Hearing impaired children are heavily dependent on their sense of vision to develop efficient communication skills; any contrast sensitivity defect can negatively impact their lives because they are not able to use auditory stimuli to recognize probable dangers in the world around them. The purpose of this study was to determine the contrast sensitivity abnormalities in deaf individuals. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, contrast sensitivity of 15- to 20-year-old high-school boys with hearing disability from Tehran, Iran were evaluated. Sixty-four eyes were tested for contrast
