Ipomoea imperati (Convolvulaceae) lives on the sandy shores of the Brazilian coast and in other areas of the world. The anti-inflammatory activity of a methanol-water extract of the leaves of I. imperati was investigated in experimental models of acute and subchronic inflammation. Topical application of the extract (10 mg/ear) inhibited mouse ear edema induced by croton oil (89.0 +/- 1.3% by the lipid fraction with an IC50 of 3.97 mg/ear and 57.0 +/- 1.3% by the aqueous fraction with an IC50 of 3.5 mg/ear) and arachidonic acid (42.0 +/- 2.0% with an IC50 of 4.98 mg/ear and 31.0 +/- 2.0% with a

BACKGROUND: Taxonomic studies of big plant genera are invariably complex due to their high species diversity. Big genera with tropical species representation exhibit excessive taxon descriptions, since tropical and subtropical regions contribute immensely to species diversity. Ipomoea is an example of a large genus, with over 800 species distributed majorly in tropical and subtropical regions and fewer occurring in temperate regions. It is polyphyletic, nesting nine other genera, which collectively form tribe Ipomoeeae. It has a long history of taxonomic and nomenclatural confusion, mainly due

Codonopsis convolvulacea is a highly valued Chinese medicinal plant containing diverse bioactive compounds. While roots/tubers have been the main medicinal parts used in practice, leaves and stems may also harbor valuable phytochemicals. However, research comparing volatiles across tissues is lacking. This study performed metabolomic profiling of leaves, stems, and tubers of C. convolvulacea to elucidate tissue-specific accumulation patterns of volatile metabolites. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry identified 302 compounds, belonging to 14 classes. Multivar

Spontaneous and experimental poisoning with the swainsonine-containing and calystegine-containing plant Ipomoea carnea subsp fistulosa is described. Three of 8 goats presenting with emaciation, weakness, symmetrical ataxia, posterior paresis, proprioceptive deficits, abnormal posture, abnormal postural reaction, and muscle hypertonia were necropsied. I fistulosa was suspected to be the cause of the neurologic disease in all cases. An experiment was conducted to confirm the diagnosis using 12 goats and diets containing 3 different concentrations of the plant. All goats fed I fistulosa developed

Sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam., is a major food crop in developing countries and is considered essential for the food security of low-income populations. Among the factors limiting its production is the pest Bedellia somnulentella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Bedelliidae), recently recorded in Brazil, and for which no chemical control methods are available. Therefore, understanding the physiological changes caused by this pest attack is important to support management strategies. The objective was to evaluate chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters in eleven sweet potato genotypes subjected o

The larvicidal and biochemical effects of Ipomoea carnea Jacq. (Convolvulaceae) methanol leaf extract against the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were determined under standard laboratory conditions. The second and fourth instar larvae of S. frugiperda were fed on castor bean leaves (Ricinus communis) treated with different concentrations (1-5%) of I. carnea methanolic leaf extract. The mortality percentage significantly increased in correlation with both concentration and exposure time compared to control. Second instar larva of S. frugiperda was more susceptible

Maintaining evolutionary potential is essential for species persistence, particularly for rare and endemic taxa that are more susceptible to habitat changes. We evaluated floral integration and phenotypic selection on the floral traits of Ipomoea cavalcantei, a species endemic to the ironstone outcrops (cangas) of the Eastern Amazon and primarily pollinated by hummingbirds. Using 90 individuals from a natural population in the Floresta Nacional de Carajás, we conducted six pollination experiments to assess the mating system. We estimated individual fitness through fruit set and characterized f

Resin glycosides act as laxatives in crude drugs derived from plants of the Convolvulaceae family. These compounds have exhibited antibacterial, ionophoric, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and multidrug resistance-modulating properties, as well as cytotoxicity against cancer cells. This study investigated the organic acid, hydroxyl fatty acid, monosaccharide, and glycosidic acid components of the crude resin glycoside fraction obtained from the methanol extract of Ipomoea alba L. (Convolvulaceae) seeds, which was subjected to alkaline and acidic hydrolysis. The alkaline hydrolysis yielded acetic

Calystegia hederacea Wall. (Convolvulaceae) is a perennial herbaceous vine that grows widely in India and East Asia. All parts of this plant are used to treat various disorders such as menoxenia and gonorrhea. Four new resin glycosides, calyhedins XI (1)-XIV (4), were isolated from the rhizomes of C. hederacea. A new glycoside, calyhedin XV (5), was isolated from its leaves and stems. Alkaline hydrolysis of 1 and 2 furnished a new glycosidic acid, calyhedic acid G (1a), from 1 and a new acid, calyhedic acid H (2a), from 2 along with 2S-methylbutyric acid and 2R-methyl-3R-hydroxybutyric (2R,3R-

The involvement of cGMP in the regulation of the flowering of Pharbitis nil was investigated through exogenous applications of cGMP and chemicals that are able to change the cGMP level and analyses of endogenous cGMP level. Exogenous applications of cGMP and 8-pCPT-cGMP (a cyclic GMP non hydrolyzed analog) to P. nil plants, which were exposed to a 12-h-long subinductive night, significantly increased flowering response. NS-2028 (guanylyl cyclase inhibitor) inhibited flowering when that compound was applied during a 16-h-long inductive night, whereas SNP (guanylyl cyclase activator) increased t

BACKGROUND: The mite Aculops lycopersici is a major tomato pest with extremely reduced gene families involved in chemoreception and detoxification. How this limited detoxification toolbox affects the evolution of resistance to acaricides in tomato russet mite(s) (TRM) remains enigmatic. Moreover, although a tomato specialist, TRM has been observed on other Solanaceae and Convolvulaceae plant species, raising questions about transcriptional plasticity underlying host exchange.
RESULTS: We identified a field strain with strongly decreased susceptibility to both abamectin and spiromesifen. We de

Antiproliferative bioassay-guided fractionation of the ethanolic extract of the endemic Madagascan plant Metaporana sericosepala led to the first natural product isolation of a butenolide diterpene, which was synthesized during an anti-inflammatory study in 1988. The structure of the compound was elucidated as 3-homofarnesyl-4-hydroxybutenolide (1) by analysis of its spectroscopic data, including 1D- and 2D-NMR data and chemical evidence. The once synthetic compound can now also be considered as a natural product. Compound 1 had modest antiproliferative activity towards the A2780 ovarian cance

Zebra chip disease (ZC) in potato (Solanum tuberosum L. [Polemoniales: Solanaceae]) can produce unmarketable tubers with striped necrotic patterns. ZC is associated with the bacterium "Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum" (Lso), which is transmitted by the potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli (Šulc) (Hemiptera: Triozidae). Potato psyllids are associated with numerous noncrop host plants, especially from the Solanaceae and Convolvulaceae; however, the contribution and importance of these hosts to ZC epidemiology in potato is poorly understood. To clarify seasonal phenologies on two such host

Alpha-ketol linolenic acid [KODA, 9,10-ketol-octadecadienoic acid, that is 9-hydroxy-10-oxo-12(Z),15(Z)-octadecadienoic acid] is a signal compound found in Lemna paucicostata after exposure to stress, such as drought, heat or osmotic stress. KODA reacts with catecholamines to generate products that strongly induce flowering, although KODA itself is inactive [Yokoyama et al. (2000) Plant Cell Physiol. 41: 110; Yamaguchi et al. (2001) Plant Cell Physiol. 42: 1201]. We examined the role of KODA in the flower-induction process of Pharbitis nil (violet). KODA was identified for the first time in se
