Supramaximal interval exercise alters measures of autonomic modulation, while a cool-down may speed the recovery of vagal modulation. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a cool-down (pedaling a cycle ergometer at 50 rpm against a resistance of 45 W) versus passive recovery (no pedaling) after supramaximal interval exercise on autonomic modulation. Sixteen moderately active individuals (Mean ± SD: 23 ± 3 years (men: n = 10; women: n = 6) were assessed for autonomic modulation at Rest, and 15 (R15), 30 (R30), 45 (R45) and 60 (R60) min following supramaximal interval exercise.

The effects of 'cool-down' during exercise recovery on cardiovascular and respiratory systems have not been fully clarified. The recovery of respiratory gasses was compared in cardiac patients after maximal exercise during which subjects either performed a cool-down or rested. Twenty-one patients (61+/-10 years) with coronary artery disease performed 2 symptom-limited incremental exercise tests on a cycle ergometer: one with a cool-down and the other without during recovery from the maximal exercise test. Expired gasses were analyzed on a breath-by-breath basis throughout the test and for 6min

It is widely believed that an active cool-down is more effective for promoting post-exercise recovery than a passive cool-down involving no activity. However, research on this topic has never been synthesized and it therefore remains largely unknown whether this belief is correct. This review compares the effects of various types of active cool-downs with passive cool-downs on sports performance, injuries, long-term adaptive responses, and psychophysiological markers of post-exercise recovery. An active cool-down is largely ineffective with respect to enhancing same-day and next-day(s) sports

Cooling a horse after intensive exercise under hot conditions is commonly recommended. The study aimed to analyze changes in the rectal and surface temperature of the horses subjected to various water cooling treatments. This followed medium-intensity exercise performed by leisure horses under moderate air temperature. The experiment involved a control group without water application, and three variants of water cooling applied to 19 warmblood geldings after medium-intensity effort. Cooling of lower, upper, and lower and upper body parts was performed. In each variant, the rectal and body surf

Background: Despite numerous data on whole-body responses, we have less information about local muscular changes during physical exercise in athletes. Oxygen saturation (SmO2) changes in the working muscles follow phases of load and are useful, as local metabolism could influence physical fitness. Methods: A total of 100 asymptomatic elite water polo players (63% male, age: 17.2 (interquartile range: 16.1-18.9) years) were examined using near-infrared spectroscopy to measure SmO2 in both vastus lateralis and left deltoid muscles during continuous uphill running treadmill exercise. Results: Dif

Migraine is characterized by recurrent episodes of severe headache and has been ranked as the second most disabling medical condition in the world. In frequent or chronic migraine, preventive treatment is recommended; pharmacological, non-pharmacological or a combination of both. Aerobic exercise is an evidence-based alternative to non-pharmacological treatment of migraines and can decrease the number of migraine attacks, intensity, and duration of headaches, as well as increase quality of life. Exercise at a moderate to high intensity level, 3 times a week, 30 minutes, excluding warm up and c

This study compared the immediate effects of two common post-exercise cool-down methods to a control condition on subsequent morphologic change in femoral cartilage and vascular response in the posterior tibial artery after running. Sixteen healthy young males (23.6 ± 2.2 years, 172.8 ± 4.9 cm, 72.2 ± 7.1 kg) visited the laboratory during three separate sessions and performed 30-min of treadmill running (7.5 km/h for the initial 5-min, followed 8.5 km/h for 25-min). After running, participants experienced one of three 30-min cool-down protocols: active cool-down, cold application, or control (

OBJECTIVE: Limited research has directly compared the effectiveness of aqua- and land-based exercises for postexercise recovery. This study aimed to fill this gap by comparing the effects of these 2 types of exercises on postexercise recovery.
METHODS: Sixteen male college athletes participated in an 8-day experimental study. The initial 2 days were dedicated to determining the intensity levels for the muscle-damaging exercise and recovery jogging. In a crossover design, participants underwent 2 sets of experimental trials. They were randomly assigned to either an aqua or land recovery interv

The prescription of exercise for individuals with and without cardiovascular disease (CVD) should be scientifically-based yet adapted to the patient. This scientific statement reviews the clinical and physiologic basis for the prescription of exercise, with specific reference to the volume of physical activity (PA) and level of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) that confer significant and optimal cardioprotective benefits. Recommendations are provided regarding the appropriate intensity, frequency, and duration of training; the concept of MET-minutes per week; critical components of the exercise

BACKGROUND: Exercise intensity (eg, target heart rate [HR]) is a fundamental component of exercise prescription to elicit health benefits in cancer survivors. Despite the validity of chest-worn monitors, their feasibility in community and unsupervised exercise settings may be challenging. As wearable technology continues to improve, consumer-based wearable sensors may represent an accessible alternative to traditional monitoring, offering additional advantages.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the agreement between the Polar H10 chest monitor and Fitbit Inspire HR for HR me

BACKGROUND: Large language model (LLM)-based artificial intelligence (AI) tools are increasingly used to generate sport and exercise training content. However, the content quality, sport-specific relevance, safety, and repeated-generation stability of AI-generated race-day plans remain insufficiently examined, particularly in competitive swimming. It also remains unclear how different AI tools may support coaches in drafting, comparing, and refining competition-day preparation plans.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the expert-rated physiological relevance, content quality, and generati

Modern medicine dictates a more active therapeutic approach in the geriatric population. This review summarizes relevant data on cardiac rehabilitation in patients aged 65 years or older. The cardiovascular risk factors in the elderly are similar to those in younger people; thus, treating hypertension or hypercholesterolemia, cessation of smoking, and changing of life style and proper diet are recommended regardless of age. Cardiovascular function gradually declines with age, and the incidence of atherosclerotic heart disease increases. Rehabilitation programs for elderly patients with postmyo

Background: Decentralization of the sympathetic nervous system in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) results in impaired vasomotor and sudomotor activity and, subsequently, impaired thermoregulatory capacity during exercise in the heat. Hyperthermia can be life-threatening and, as such, cooling interventions are needed to prevent this sequela. Objectives: To measure change in core temperature (ΔTC) over time during exercise in normothermic and high ambient heat conditions to compare thermoregulatory capacity in persons with varying degrees of intact vasomotor and sudomotor activity and to d

Musicians are prone to performance injuries due to the nature of musical practice, and classical pianists are among the groups at high risk for playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs). With the growing number of classical pianists in Malaysia, this study aimed to investigate the proportion of PRMDs occurring among classical piano students in tertiary institutions in Malaysia. Associations between gender, practice habits, diet, sports involvement, and PRMD were investigated. A survey was conducted among classical piano students (n=192) at tertiary institutions of Kuala Lumpur and Sela
