Eye-Tracking Metrics for Figure-Copying Processes in Early- vs. Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease.

Visuospatial dysfunction is a common symptom in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). To more focus on copying processes rather than on finally completed figures, we conceptually split the copying processes into three stages: visuoperceptual function, visuoconstructional function, and working memory function. We constructed perceptual and working spaces to investigate the different stages of copying, and then, we compared the number and duration of fixations and saccades and the number of switches across the two spaces. We used eye-tracking glasses to assess eye-tracking metrics in patients

Expression and conservation of processed copies of the RBMX gene.

RBMX and RBMY are members of an ancient pair of genes located on the sex chromosomes that encode RNA-binding proteins involved in splicing. These genes have differentiated and evolved separately on the X and Y Chromosomes. RBMY has acquired a testis-specific function, whereas, as shown here, RBMX is ubiquitously expressed and is subject to X inactivation. We have also found that multiple processed copies of RBMX are present in the human genome. RBMX-like sequences (RBMXLs) located on human Chrs 1, 4, 6, 9 (9p13 and 9p24), 11, 20, and X lack introns and thus probably result from retroposition e

Multigenerational patterns of parenting-at-risk: A test of interpersonal specificity using copy process theory.

OBJECTIVES: This study tests ways in which the perception of intergenerational continuity in parenting behaviors among child-maltreatment (CM) and non-CM families conform to Benjamin's (2006) Copy Process Theory, which considers three copy processes: Identification (be like him/her), Recapitulation (behave as if he/she is still present and in charge), and Introjection (treat myself as he/she treated me). METHOD: Across two home visits and a laboratory session, 171 mothers of preschoolers (M = 3.7 years) completed the SASB Intrex Questionnaire relative to herself, her history with her parents,

Beyond phonological and morphological processing: pure copying as a marker of dyslexia in Chinese but not poor reading of English.

To examine cognitive correlates of dyslexia in Chinese and reading difficulties in English as a foreign language, a total of 14 Chinese dyslexic children (DG), 16 poor readers of English (PE), and 17 poor readers of both Chinese and English (PB) were compared to a control sample (C) of 17 children, drawn from a statistically representative sample of 177 second graders. Children were tested on pure copying of unfamiliar stimuli, rapid automatized naming (RAN), phoneme deletion, syllable deletion, and morphological awareness. With children's ages and Raven's nonverbal reasoning statistically con

DNA template effect on RNA splicing: two copies of the same gene in the same nucleus are processed differently.

Many cellular and viral genes are parts of complex transcription units containing multiple splicing choices. During the course of an adenoviral replicative cycle, different spliced versions of a single gene predominate, depending on the stage of infection. This is true for several adenoviral genes. In this paper we show for the viral E1B transcription unit that splice site usage regulates this process. The change in alternative splicing in this system does not depend on the sequence of the transcribed genes. Non-adenoviral genes, such as the SV40 early region and the polyoma early region, whic

An Analytic Framework Characterizes the Biological Processes That Shape Copy Number-Based Genome Instability Patterns in Breast Cancer.

UNLABELLED: Copy number (CN) alterations (CNA) accumulate nonrandomly within cancer genomes reflecting specific DNA damage and repair events. Higher-order patterning of CNAs can illuminate the types and determinants of genome instability (GI), as well as their clinical relevance, highlighting the need to develop analytic frameworks to capture such patterns. To address this issue, we collated a literature-curated compendium of predefined CN-based GI scores and extracted de novo CN signatures. Application to 2,763 breast cancer genomes from The Cancer Genome Atlas and METABRIC revealed the compl

A Comprehensive Evaluation of the Process of Copying a Complex Figure in Early- and Late-Onset Alzheimer Disease: A Quantitative Analysis of Digital Pen Data.

BACKGROUND: The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (RCFT) is a neuropsychological test that is widely used to assess visual memory and visuoconstructional deficits in patients with cognitive impairment, including Alzheimer disease (AD). Patients with AD have an increased tendency for exhibiting extraordinary behaviors in the RCFT for selecting the drawing area, organizing the figure, and deciding the order of images, among other activities. However, the conventional scoring system based on pen and paper has a limited ability to reflect these detailed behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to e

Detection of breast cancer by soft-copy reading of digital mammograms: comparison between a routine image-processing parameter and high-contrast parameters.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have reported the clinical usefulness of the soft-copy reading of mammograms. However, image-processing parameters for soft-copy reading of digital mammograms have not been established. PURPOSE: To compare observer performance in detecting breast cancer by soft-copy reading of digital mammograms using a routine image-processing parameter versus each of several high-contrast parameters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The mammograms of 154 breasts, including 48 abnormal breasts with breast cancer and 106 normal breasts, were examined. Cancers were classified into 34 mass-domi

Sex Disparities in the Processes Underlying Aging: Mitochondrial DNA Copy Number Associations with Dynapenia, 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 Levels and Quality of Life in Older Adults.

Background/Objectives: Mitochondrial dysfunction, often reflected by a decline in mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN) in peripheral blood cells (PMBCs), is a key hallmark of biological aging and is linked to numerous adverse health outcomes, including frailty and cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, emerging evidence suggests that vitamin D may influence mitochondrial dysfunction. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate the associations of mtDNA-CN with muscular strength, self-rated health, and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) levels in a community-dwelling elderly population.

[Create or copy... Which is the difference?].

Creating and copying are two different processes; we must not confuse creativity with plagiarism. However, this distinction is problematic, because there is no possibility of creating from scratch, this implies that any creative act necessarily arises from accumulative experience, inevitably producing a continuity between old and new. Even so it is necessary to establish clearly the difference between creating and copying. It is not desirable that a matter of such importance remains in the nebula or that the relationship between creativity and ethics is kept unaware. There are many cases of pl

Neuropsychological basis of impaired gesture imitations in patients with Alzheimer's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to examine the neuropsychological factors that may be related to the impaired gesture imitations in patients with dementia. METHODS: The imitation of unilateral finger and bimanual gestures was evaluated in 162 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 103 patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). The relationships of gesture imitation performance to global cognition, semantic fluency, phonemic fluency, figure copying, clock drawing, and trail-making test part A (TMT-A) scores were examined. RESULTS: Mean scores for unilateral finger imitation we

The neural substrates of drawing: a voxel-based morphometry analysis of constructional, hierarchical, and spatial representation deficits.

Deficits in the ability to draw objects, despite apparently intact perception and motor abilities, are defined as constructional apraxia. Constructional deficits, often diagnosed based on performance on copying complex figures, have been reported in a range of pathologies, perhaps reflecting the contribution of several underlying factors to poor figure drawing. The current study provides a comprehensive analysis of brain-behavior relationships in drawing disorders based on data from a large cohort of subacute stroke patients (n = 358) using whole-brain voxel-wise statistical analyses linked to

The Effects of Script and Orthographic Complexity on the Handwriting and Spelling Performance of Children With Dyslexia.

Handwriting and spelling problems are often associated in dyslexia. However, the nature of their association is still unclear, and most of the existing research in this area is on deep orthographies (mainly English). The extent to which findings are applicable across languages is uncertain. This article examines the effects of script (manuscript/cursive) and orthographic complexity (complex/simple spellings) on the word dictation and word-copying performance of a group of 24 Italian children with dyslexia and handwriting difficulties (DH group, aged 8-10). Their performance was compared with t

Writing treatment for severe aphasia: who benefits?

Writing treatment that involved repeated copying and recall of target words was implemented with 8 individuals with severe aphasia in order to discern the best candidates for the treatment. Four of the 8 participants had strong positive responses to the copy and recall treatment (CART), relearning spellings for 15 targeted words during 10 to 12 weeks of treatment and up to 5 additional words during a month-long homework-based program. Of the 4 other participants, 3 learned the spellings of some target words but failed to reach criterion, and 1 had a poor treatment outcome. Insights regarding p

The incidence and nature of letter orientation errors in reading disability.

Letter orientation confusions (reversals) in the reading and writing of 10-year-old children with and without reading disability were investigated to determine whether reading disability is associated with letter orientation errors and to identify the nature of the errors. In a variety of tasks measuring letter orientation confusions in reception (reversal detection and recognition) and production (controlled writing, copying), individuals with reading disability made more orientation confusions than average readers. Orientation errors were more frequent for reversible than for nonreversible i

What part of the brain is involved in graphic design thinking in landscape architecture?

Graphic design thinking is a key skill for landscape architects, but little is known about the links between the design process and brain activity. Based on Goel's frontal lobe lateralization hypothesis (FLLH), we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to scan the brain activity of 24 designers engaging in four design processes-viewing, copy drawing, preliminary ideas, and refinement-during graphic design thinking. The captured scans produced evidence of dramatic differences between brain activity when copying an existing graphic and when engaging in graphic design thinking. The res

Characterizing the Details of Spatial Construction: Cognitive Constraints and Variability.

Spatial construction-the activity of creating novel spatial arrangements or copying existing ones-is a hallmark of human spatial cognition. Spatial construction abilities predict math and other academic outcomes and are regularly used in IQ testing, but we know little about the cognitive processes that underlie them. In part, this lack of understanding is due to both the complex nature of construction tasks and the tendency to limit measurement to the overall accuracy of the end goal. Using an automated recording and coding system, we examined in detail adults' performance on a block copying t

Abstract representations in temporal cortex support generative linguistic processing.

Generativity, the ability to create and evaluate novel constructions, is a fundamental property of human language and cognition. The productivity of generative processes is determined by the scope of the representations they engage. Here we examine the neural representation of reduplication, a productive phonological process that can create novel forms through patterned syllable copying (e.g. ba-mih → ba-ba-mih, ba-mih-mih, or ba-mih-ba). Using MRI-constrained source estimates of combined MEG/EEG data collected during an auditory artificial grammar task, we identified localized cortical activi
