We reviewed 67 consecutive patients with fractures of the coracoid process, classifying them by the relationship between the fracture site and the coracoclavicular ligament. The 53 type-I fractures were behind the attachment of this ligament, and the 11 type-II fractures were anterior to it. The relationship of three fractures was uncertain. Type-I fractures were associated with a wide variety of shoulder injuries and consequent dissociation between the scapula and the clavicle. Treatment was usually by open reduction and fixation for type-I fractures and conservative methods for type-II. At f

Sonography is widely known as an accurate imaging tool for assessment of the rotator cuff of the shoulder, the long head of the biceps tendon, and joint disorders, but it is rarely performed to evaluate the coracoid process and the adjacent soft tissues. Nevertheless, sonography can show anatomic details of this region and be used to assess several pathologic conditions. The aims of this pictorial essay are to briefly review the anatomy of the coracoid process region, describe examination technique and normal sonographic appearances, and present the sonographic findings of the main disorders a

Seventeen patients with complete separation of the acromioclavicular joint were operated on acutely with transposition of the coracoid tip to the clavicle. All the patients were examined after a mean follow-up time of 7.5 years. Twelve patients had good function, 3 had slight pain in extreme positions, and 2 had poor function with pain at rest. Eleven patients had the screw removed, 2 of them because of deep infection. In 3 patients the coracoid tip fragmented during the operation. Two patients had an unsatisfying cosmetic result. As long as nonoperative treatment gives equal or better long-te

The coracoid process is a hook-shaped bone structure projecting anterolaterally from the superior aspect of the scapular neck. Surgeons often refer to the coracoid process as the "lighthouse of the shoulder" given its proximity to major neurovascular structures such as the brachial plexus and the axillary artery and vein, its role in guiding surgical approaches, and its utility as a landmark for other important structures in the shoulder. The coracoid also serves as a critical anchor for many tendinous and ligamentous attachments. These include the tendons of the pectoralis minor, coracobrachi

Three cases demonstrating avulsion of the coracoid process from the scapula associated with acromioclavicular separation are presented. Two patients were adolescents and one a young adult, suggesting that the coracoid base epiphyseal plate in this age group may be weaker than the coracoclavicular ligaments. A cranially-angled view of the shoulder was diagnostic in two cases. Recognition of this condition is mandatory if the orthopedist is planning fixation of the clavicle to the coracoid to remedy an acromioclavicular separation.

BACKGROUND: Although fracture of the coracoid process (CF) used to be considered rare, it is now more commonly encountered due to increased awareness and advances in imaging methods. This review aimed to analyze reported cases of CF to determine its mechanism and appropriate treatment.
METHODS: PubMed and Scopus were searched using the terms "scapula fracture" and "coracoid fracture." The inclusion criteria were English full-text articles concerning CF that described patient characteristics with appropriate images. The exclusion criteria included cases without appropriate images and those wit

INTRODUCTION: The coracoid process is a small hook-shaped feature on the scapula and a key structure of the superior shoulder suspensory complex (SSSC). Fractures of the coracoid are rare. Therefore, no consensus exists regarding treatment of coracoid process fractures. Systematically review indications, outcomes and complications of traumatic coracoid process fractures in adults, and to provide a treatment algorithm.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was performed to identify all relevant studies on the treatment of coracoid process fractures. The methodological quality of the studi

INTRODUCTION: Although the coracoid process seems to play an important anatomical role, there are few reports concerning fracture nonunion of the coracoid process (CN) and its disorders. Therefore, there is no widely accepted standard for the treatment of CN.

The coracoid process is a part of the scapula and plays an important role in shoulder function. The present case demonstrates bilateral separation of the coracoid processes from the scapular bodies. The cause of this condition was thought to be a failure of fusion of the ossification centers of the coracoid processes with the scapular bodies. Bilateral unfused coracoid processes was identified incidentally in a patient with recurrent dislocation in the left shoulder. However, history of antecedent trauma to the coradoid region was not found. It would be important to distinguish this condition

Bone tumors of the coracoid process of the scapula are rare, and diagnosis and treatment often are delayed. The records of 18 patients with bone tumors of the coracoid process were reviewed. Histologic types included eight cases of ordinary chondrosarcoma, three cases of dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma, two cases of osteoid osteoma, and one case each of osteosarcoma, plasmacytoma, lymphoma, giant cell tumor, and aneurysmal bone cyst. All 18 patients had shoulder pain, and eight of them had been treated with steroid injections for nonneoplastic conditions. Radiologically, chondrosarcoma did not

BACKGROUND Coracoid process fractures are uncommon and are often complicated by many types of shoulder girdle injuries. Previous reports have shown that osteosynthesis for isolated coracoid process fractures results in favorable outcomes and high bone union rates. However, owing to the rarity of coracoid process fractures combined with distal clavicle fractures, there are limited data to guide treatment strategies. We report a case of symptomatic nonunion despite performing osteosynthesis for fractures of the coracoid process and distal clavicle. CASE REPORT A 60-year-old man presented with le

Fractures of the coracoid process are relatively rare, and current management guidelines remain unclear. Most coracoid fractures occur in conjunction with other shoulder injuries, including dislocations and fractures. Identifying coracoid fractures can be difficult because most fractures are nondisplaced and can be missed on radiographs or may be masked by other injuries. Management is largely guided by fracture location and displacement. Conservative treatment is preferred for fractures that are minimally displaced, whereas indications for surgical fixation include fractures that are displace

Two cases of acromioclavicular dislocation associated with fracture of the coracoid process are described. This association is unusual and the coracoid fracture may only be recognised on an axillary radiograph of the shoulder. Both the cases were treated conservatively, with good results. The management and outcome of other cases described in the literature are reviewed and discussed.

A patient with an epiphyseal separation through the base of the coracoid process of the shoulder associated with a grade I acromioclavicular sprain is reported. The epiphyseal separation was not visible on conventional roentgenograms. A CT scan demonstrated the abnormality. In patients with considerable intractable pain due to contusion of the shoulder, early use of CT should be considered to determine whether symptoms are caused by epiphyseal separation of the coracoid process.

Twenty-eight cases of fractures of the coracoid process were assessed regarding general characteristics, causes of injury, regions of contused wound, fracture types and complications. From the results of the assessment, the fractures were roughly divided into five types: type I; apical, type II; middle, type III; basal, type IV; intraarticular (including upper 1/3-1/4 of the glenoid cavity), and type V; others. Subtypes A and B were present in type III and IV. From the specifics of the contusions and complicated osseous-articular injuries around the shoulder, the mechanisms of injury in each t

Background and Objectives: Coracoid process (CP) fractures combined with acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation are extremely rare, and evidence guiding optimal surgical management remains limited. This retrospective, single-center case series study evaluated clinical and radiologic outcomes after simultaneous fixation of both lesions using a clavicular hook plate and a coracoid screw. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 15 consecutive patients with Ogawa type I CP fractures combined with AC joint dislocation who underwent clavicular hook plate and coracoid screw fixation betw

A fracture of the acromion and coracoid processes of scapula is rarely seen in the outpatient clinic, due to the acromion's anatomical position and shape, as well as the strong ligaments and muscles that are attached to it. These fractures are caused by either direct or indirect high-energy trauma injuries to the shoulder joint, leading to severe pain and a grossly restricted range of motion. Several acromial classifications were reported, but this type of longitudinal plane fracture of the acromion process in our case is yet to be described in the current literature. We present a rare combina

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study is to present an unusual lesion combining instability of the shoulder with a fracture of the coracoid process.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors have treated one case of recurrent anterior dislocation of the shoulder associated with pseudarthrosis of the coracoid process. The shoulder was stabilised by surgery using the Latarjet procedure.
DISCUSSION: The association of an anterior dislocation of the shoulder and pseudarthrosis of the coracoid process is very unusual. It is often unrecognized because of poor knowledge of this lesion or poor quality
