Coral diseases and bleaching on Colombian Caribbean coral reefs.

Since 1998 the National Monitoring System for the Coral Reefs of Colombia (SIMAC) has monitored the occurrence of coral bleaching and diseases in some Colombian coral reefs (permanent stations at San Andres Island, Rosario Islands, Tayrona, San Bernardo Islands and Urabá). The main purpose is to evaluate their health status and to understand the factors that have been contributing to their decline. To estimate these occurrences, annual surveys in 126 permanent belt transects (10 x 2m) with different depth intervals (3-6 meters, 9-12 meters and 15-18 meters) are performed at all reef sites. Dat

Rapid coral bleaching recovery via symbiont transfer from healthy corals.

Coral bleaching, the temperature-induced loss of dinoflagellate symbionts, is a major driver of global coral reef decline. Although corals can regain symbionts through repopulation of residual symbionts or via environmental acquisition, these processes are often too slow to prevent coral mortality. Mechanisms that enable rapid and effective symbiont reintroduction leading to full recovery remain largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate coral bleaching recovery through contact-mediated transfer of symbionts from healthy corals using small coral fragments. We show that symbiont transfer is rapid, o

A new, high-resolution global mass coral bleaching database.

Episodes of mass coral bleaching have been reported in recent decades and have raised concerns about the future of coral reefs on a warming planet. Despite the efforts to enhance and coordinate coral reef monitoring within and across countries, our knowledge of the geographic extent of mass coral bleaching over the past few decades is incomplete. Existing databases, like ReefBase, are limited by the voluntary nature of contributions, geographical biases in data collection, and the variations in the spatial scale of bleaching reports. In this study, we have developed the first-ever gridded, glo

Ocean acidification causes bleaching and productivity loss in coral reef builders.

Ocean acidification represents a key threat to coral reefs by reducing the calcification rate of framework builders. In addition, acidification is likely to affect the relationship between corals and their symbiotic dinoflagellates and the productivity of this association. However, little is known about how acidification impacts on the physiology of reef builders and how acidification interacts with warming. Here, we report on an 8-week study that compared bleaching, productivity, and calcification responses of crustose coralline algae (CCA) and branching (Acropora) and massive (Porites) coral

Changes in Caribbean coral disease prevalence after the 2005 bleaching event.

Bleaching events and disease epizootics have increased during the past decades, suggesting a positive link between these 2 causes in producing coral mortality. However, studies to test this hypothesis, integrating a broad range of hierarchical spatial scales from habitats to distant localities, have not been conducted in the Caribbean. In this study, we examined links between bleaching intensity and disease prevalence collected from 6 countries, 2 reef sites for each country, and 3 habitats within each reef site (N = 6 x 2 x 3 = 36 site-habitat combinations) during the peak of bleaching in 200

Disease incidence is related to bleaching extent in reef-building corals.

Recent outbreaks of coral bleaching and disease have contributed to substantial declines in the abundance of reef-building coral. Significant attention has been paid to both phenomena in order to determine their effect on reef trajectories. Although each is positively correlated with high temperatures, few studies have explored the potential links between bleaching and disease. A longitudinal study of corals in the Florida Keys was therefore conducted during the 2005 Caribbean bleaching event to quantify bleaching extent and disease incidence in corals, and to determine whether they were relat

Changing disturbance regimes, material legacies, and stabilizing feedbacks: Dead coral skeletons impair key recovery processes following coral bleaching.

Ecosystem responses to disturbance depend on the nature of the perturbation and the ecological legacies left behind, making it critical to understand how climate-driven changes in disturbance regimes modify resilience properties of ecosystems. For coral reefs, recent increases in severe marine heat waves now co-occur with powerful storms, the historic agent of disturbance. While storms kill coral and remove their skeletons, heat waves bleach and kill corals but leave their skeletons intact. Here, we explored how the material legacy of dead coral skeletons modifies two key ecological processes

Standardised protocols enable efficient assessment of coral bleaching severity across tropical reefs.

Once thriving ecosystems, coral reefs are now undergoing widespread decline as climate change intensifies marine heatwaves. Effective monitoring of these events is critical at global and regional scales. Standardised, repeatable protocols are essential to assess impacts and guide timely management responses. The fourth global coral bleaching event, which began in April 2023, affected roughly 84% of the world's coral reefs, causing extensive stress and mortality. In this study, two bleaching severity assessment protocols were applied to coral reefs of the Maldives (Indian Ocean) to evaluate the

Cloudiness reduces the bleaching response of coral reefs exposed to heat stress.

Climate change and warming ocean temperatures are a threat to coral reef ecosystems. Since the 1980s, there has been an increase in mass coral bleaching and associated coral mortality due to more frequent and severe thermal stress. Although most research has focused on the role of temperature, coral bleaching is a product of the interacting effects of temperature and other environmental variables such as solar radiation. High light exacerbates the effects of thermal stress on corals, whereas reductions in light can reduce sensitivity to thermal stress. Here, we use an updated global dataset of

Widespread coral bleaching across subtropical and temperate Japan under record marine heat stress.

Marine heatwaves in 2024 drove record-breaking sea surface temperatures (SSTs) across the Japanese coast, generating the highest Degree Heating Weeks (DHW), which quantifies the accumulation of thermal stress, observed in the past four decades. Here, we quantify thermal stress and coral bleaching responses across a latitudinal gradient spanning subtropical reef systems and non-reef temperate regions (24°-35°N). DHW exceeded 8 °C-weeks at all sites and reached extreme levels of 17-19 °C-weeks at high latitudes. This unprecedented heat stress triggered widespread mass coral bleaching across both

Dimethylsulphoniopropionate as a water quality indicator of coral bleaching: Implications for monitoring studies on the Great Barrier Reef.

Short term stress experiments with dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and tripolyphosphate (TPP) have been carried out on the staghorn coral Acropora intermedia, collected from Heron Island in the southern Great Barrier Reef, at low and elevated seawater temperatures. Zooxanthellae, chlorophyll a, intracellular and tissue dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), and extracellular DMSP production were measured to assess the level of stress on A. intermedia at different winter and summer seasons from 2001 to 2003. Whilst no significant changes were measured in these stress indicators in 2001 and 200

Identification of long non-coding RNAs in two anthozoan species and their possible implications for coral bleaching.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been shown to play regulatory roles in a diverse range of biological processes and are associated with the outcomes of various diseases. The majority of studies about lncRNAs focus on model organisms, with lessened investigation in non-model organisms to date. Herein, we have undertaken an investigation on lncRNA in two zoanthids (cnidarian): Protolpalythoa varibilis and Palythoa caribaeorum. A total of 11,206 and 13,240 lncRNAs were detected in P. variabilis and P. caribaeorum transcriptome, respectively. Comparison using NONCODE database indicated that the

Benthic baselines of the Groote Archipelago's key reefs in the wake of mass coral bleaching and Tropical Cyclone Megan.

Coral reefs around the world are experiencing increasingly frequent and intense stress events, leading to benthic phase shifts. The ecological consequences of this are often profound and lasting, necessitating the development of both effective and regionally specific conservation strategies. Actualising positive conservational outcomes require managers to first gain insight into the present ecosystem diversity and structure; yet, in Groote Eylandt, a remote reef and largest island in the Gulf of Carpentaria off the northern end of Australia, this has not occurred. The Traditional Owners of Gro

Proteomic insights into the combined effects of near-threshold bleaching temperature and prometryn exposure on the coral Galaxea fascicularis.

Ocean warming events increasingly co-occur with coastal agrochemical pollution, yet their joint effects on coral holobiont molecular responses remain poorly resolved. We exposed the reef-building coral Galaxea fascicularis to near-threshold warming (30 °C), prometryn (1 μg L-1), and their combination for 4 days, and quantified coral host and Symbiodiniaceae protein abundance using TMT-based proteomics to capture early-stage molecular responses. Heat was the primary driver of proteome shifts, consistent with suppressed biosynthesis and reallocation toward maintenance, whereas prometryn imposed

Divergent expression of hypoxia response systems under deoxygenation in reef-forming corals aligns with bleaching susceptibility.

Exposure of marine life to low oxygen is accelerating worldwide via climate change and localized pollution. Mass coral bleaching and mortality have recently occurred where reefs have experienced chronic low oxygen events. However, the mechanistic basis of tolerance to oxygen levels inadequate to sustain normal functioning (i.e. hypoxia) and whether it contributes to bleaching susceptibility, remain unknown. We therefore experimentally exposed colonies of the environmentally resilient Acropora tenuis, a common reef-building coral from the Great Barrier Reef, to deoxygenation-reoxygenation stres

Species-specific interactions between algal endosymbionts and coral hosts define their bleaching response to heat and light stress.

The impacts of warming seas on the frequency and severity of bleaching events are well documented, but the potential for different Symbiodinium types to enhance the physiological tolerance of reef corals is not well understood. Here we compare the functionality and physiological properties of juvenile corals when experimentally infected with one of two homologous Symbiodinium types and exposed to combined heat and light stress. A suite of physiological indicators including chlorophyll a fluorescence, oxygen production and respiration, as well as pigment concentration consistently demonstrated

Ten years of change to coral communities off Mona and Desecheo Islands, Puerto Rico, from disease and bleaching.

Remote reefs off southwest Puerto Rico have experienced recent losses in live coral cover of 30 to 80%, primarily due to the decline of Montastraea annularis and M. faveolata from disease and bleaching. These species were formerly the largest, oldest, and most abundant corals on these reefs, constituting over 65% of the living coral cover and 40 to 80% of the total number of colonies. From 1998 to 2001, outbreaks of yellow band disease (YBD) and white plague (WP) affected 30 to 60% of the M. annularis (complex) colonies. Disease prevalence declined beginning in 2002, and then increased immedia

Stronger Together: Isograft Fusion Accelerates Recovery and May Facilitate Heat-Evolved Symbiont Transmission in Bleached Adult Corals.

Experimentally evolved, heat-tolerant algal symbionts (heat-evolved; HE) offer a promising means of enhancing coral holobiont thermotolerance under warming oceans. However, translating their benefits into restoration practices requires scalable delivery methods. Coral tissue fusion may provide one such pathway by facilitating HE symbiont transfer to wild corals; however, its feasibility remains largely untested. As an initial test, we paired adult isografts of Galaxea fascicularis and Psammocora columna hosting HE Cladocopium proliferum (SS8) with chemically bleached, SS8-naive recipients. Fus

Marine heatwaves depress metabolic activity and impair cellular acid-base homeostasis in reef-building corals regardless of bleaching susceptibility.

Ocean warming is causing global coral bleaching events to increase in frequency, resulting in widespread coral mortality and disrupting the function of coral reef ecosystems. However, even during mass bleaching events, many corals resist bleaching despite exposure to abnormally high temperatures. While the physiological effects of bleaching have been well documented, the consequences of heat stress for bleaching-resistant individuals are not well understood. In addition, much remains to be learned about how heat stress affects cellular-level processes that may be overlooked at the organismal l

Agents of coral mortality on reef formations of the Colombian Pacific.

The National Monitoring System for Coral Reefs of Colombia (SIMAC) monitors the impact of some of the most important agents of coral tissue loss (bleaching and/or disease) in the Colombian Pacific coral formations since 1998. Physiological bleaching is among the main results of stress in the area. Signs of coral diseases resembling bacterial bleaching such as White Plague and White Band, were observed in Malpelo and Gorgona islands. Damage to the Pacific gorgonian Pacifigorgia spp., similar to those produced by Aspergillosis in Caribbean corals, was detected in Utria Bay. The presence of tumor
