Reaching movements made to visual targets in a rotating room are initially deviated in path and endpoint in the direction of transient Coriolis forces generated by the motion of the arm relative to the rotating environment. With additional reaches, movements become progressively straighter and more accurate. Such adaptation can occur even in the absence of visual feedback about movement progression or terminus. Here we examined whether congenitally blind and sighted subjects without visual feedback would demonstrate adaptation to Coriolis forces when they pointed to a haptically specified targ

Susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to constant levels of Coriolis, cross-coupling stimulation is lower in zero G and higher in 1.8 G than in a 1-G force environment (10, 13). The goal of the present experiment was to determine whether gravitoinertial force magnitude also influences oculomotor and perceptual responses to Coriolis, cross-coupling stimulation. We had blind-folded subjects who were rotating at constant velocity make standardized head movements during the free-fall and high force phases of parabolic flight, and we measured both the characteristics of their horizontal

Coriolis, cross-coupled angular acceleration stimulation readily induces motion sickness under terrestrial conditions. Nevertheless, the Skylab astronauts, when tested with such stimulation in-flight, were insusceptible even though each had been susceptible pre-flight. It is unclear whether this decreased susceptibility was the consequence of in-flight adaptation or in part the result of immediate changes in sensory-motor and vestibulo-motor function that occur during exposure to microgravity conditions. To evaluate this issue, we have tested individuals both in the high and low force phases o

Hybrid nanofluids' enhanced thermophysical properties make them applicable in a plethora of mechanical and engineering applications requiring augmented heat transfer. The present study focuses on a three-dimensional Copper-Aluminium Oxide [Formula: see text]-water based hybrid nanofluid flow within the boundary layer with heat transfer over a rotating exponentially stretching plate, subjected to an inclined magnetic field. The sheet rotates at an angular velocity [Formula: see text] and the angle of inclination of the magnetic field is [Formula: see text]. Employing a set of appropriate simila

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to observe and analyze the ocular movements induced by Coriolis stimulation (eccentric pitch while rotating: PWR) that induces Coriolis forces on the vestibular apparatus of healthy human individuals.
METHODS: A total of 31 healthy subjects participated in the study. Eccentric PWR was performed on 27 subjects, by pitching the participants' heads forward and backward at an angle of 30° each on an axis parallel and 7 cm below inter-aural axis, at a frequency of 0.5 Hz while on a chair rotating at a constant angular velocity of 97.2°/s on the earth-vertical axi

Short-radius centrifugation offers a promising countermeasure to the adverse effects of prolonged weightlessness. Head movements made in a rotating environment elicit Coriolis effects, which seriously compromise sensory and motor processes. We have previously found that, contrary to common belief, participants can adapt to the Coriolis effects associated with single-quadrant yaw head turns during 23-rpm short-radius centrifugation, while maintaining their adaptation to stationary environments. Here, we focus on motion sickness and illusory motion, the most problematic subjective side effects.

Coriolis effects are notorious in relation to disorientation and motion sickness in aircrew. A review is provided of experimental data on these Coriolis effects, including the modulatory effects of adding visual or somatosensory rotatory motion information. A vector analysis of the consequences of head movements during somatosensory, visual and/or vestibular rotatory motion stimulation revealed that the more the sensed angular velocity vector after the head movements is aligned with the gravitoinertial force vector, the less nauseating effects are experienced. It is demonstrated that this is a

Humans are accustomed to Earth's constant gravitational acceleration of 1g. Here we assessed if complex movements such as jumps can be adapted to different acceleration levels in a non-constant force field elicited through centrifugation. Kinematics, kinetics and muscle activity of 14 male subjects (age 27±5years, body mass 77±6kg, height 181±7cm) were recorded during repetitive hopping in a short-arm human centrifuge for five different acceleration levels (0.5g, 0.75g, 1g, 1.25g, 1.5g). These data were compared to those recorded during normal hops on the ground, and hops in a previously valid

Several aspects of the environment of divers should increase their susceptibility to motion sickness: a) sensory conflicts, b) body fluid redistribution, and c) nitrogen narcosis. We tested motion sickness susceptibility by placing subjects on a rotating platform and having them perform stylized heat movements that produced cross-coupled angular accelerations in vestibular end organs until nausea developed. This test was performed once each day on 9 consecutive days while subjects were immersed at the end of 3-4 h of diving. The test was also carried out while subjects were nonimmersed with no

Forty-two experiments on 21 test subjects, aged 20 to 40, were carried out to study possibilities of increasing vestibular resistance. This was achieved by improving the cerebral blood supply of the subjects who used the breathing air of 40-43% oxygen, 2% carbon dioxide and nitrogen. The results were treated statistically. This breathing air proved to increase the resistance of the vestibular analyzer to adequate stimuli. It is recommended to use this breathing air consisting of 40-43% oxygen, 2% carbon dioxide and nitrogen to prevent motion sickness and to discontinue vestibulo-vegetative dis

The effect of an arbitrary loading of different muscle groups (shoulder, back, legs) and motor acts on the tolerance to Coriolis accelerations was investigated in 140 experiments in which 40 test subjects participated. The accelerations were cumulated and simulated by the Bryanov scheme. Muscle tension was accompanied by a less expressed vestibulo-vegetative reaction and shortening of the recovery period after the development of motion sickness symptoms. The greatest changes were observed during the performance of complex motor acts and tension of shoulder muscles. Possible mechanisms of these

BACKGROUND: Technological advances have allowed centrifuges to become more than physiological testing and training devices; sustained G, fully interactive flight simulation is now possible. However, head movements under G can result in vestibular stimulation that can lead to motion sickness (MS) symptoms that are potentially distracting, nauseogenic, and unpleasant. In the current study an MS adaptation protocol was tested for head movements under +Gz.
METHODS: Experienced pilots made 14 predetermined head movements in a sustained G flight simulator (at 3 +Gz) on 5 consecutive days and 17 d a

BACKGROUND: Airsickness (AS) still represents a major issue in aviation medicine and affects many student pilots and aircrew members. This study aimed at producing an update of the Italian Air Force rehabilitation program for AS, including data on a prolonged follow-up (> 8 yr).
METHODS: Data from 20 military pilots with a past history of rehabilitation for incapacitating AS were compared to those of 65 normal controls. All individuals from both samples were categorized as dropouts or successfully employed in fast jets, multiengine air carriers, or helicopters. All AS individuals were analyze

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness evokes not only discomfort but also marked equilibrium ataxia. However, its mechanism of ataxia remains unclear.
HYPOTHESIS: We supposed that stance, gaze, and sensation may be uniformly controlled by the perception of the surrounding space.
METHODS: Using Coriolis stimulation, we examined eight normal subjects and two patients with bilateral labyrinthine loss. They were asked to stand on a platform; then while being rotated clockwise 60 degrees x s(-1), they tilted their head 30 degrees. Displacement of the center of pressure and ocular movements were recorded us

Long-duration exposure to weightlessness results in bone demineralization, muscle atrophy, cardiovascular deconditioning, altered sensory-motor control, and central nervous system reorganizations. Exercise countermeasures and body loading methods so far employed have failed to prevent these changes. A human mission to Mars might last 2 or 3 years and without effective countermeasures could result in dangerous levels of bone and muscle loss. Artificial gravity generated by rotation of an entire space vehicle or of an inner chamber could be used to prevent structural changes. Some of the physica

The effect of Coriolis, cross-coupled stimulation on the vestibuloocular reflex and the elicitation of motion sickness depends on background gravitoinertial force level (DiZio et al. 1986, 1987; Graybiel et al. 1977; Lackner and Graybiel 1984, 1986). We have explored whether this response dependency is related to the unusual patterns of sensorimotor activity present during exposure to non-terrestrial gravitoinertial force levels, to alterations in the encoding of head movements in different gravitoinertial force environments, or to some combination thereof. Blindfolded subjects were exposed to
