Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis are among the most important parasitic nematodes of small ruminants. Caenorhabditis elegans, a free-living nematode, is used as a model for evaluating anthelmintic activity of a variety of test substances. Extracts of several medicinal plants are useful in vitro and in vivo against nematode development. Extracts of Curtisia dentata, a South African medicinal plant, and compounds isolated from leaves of this plant were investigated for anthelmintic activity against T. colubriformis, H. contortus and C. elegans. The acetone and dichlorometh

Seventeen undescribed triterpenoids, comprising three structural types-protostanes (1-5), multifloranes (6-8), and oleanane analogs (10-18), along with eight known compounds (9, and 19-25), were isolated from the leaves of Alangium salviifolium, a plant of the genus Alangium (family Cornaceae). Their structures were elucidated through extensive NMR and HRESIMS analyses, and the absolute configurations of 1a, 6, 7, 10, and 11 were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Interestingly, compound 1 underwent an intramolecular electrophilic addition to form derivative 1a spontaneously. Bioactivity evaluati

Although not major crops, Cornaceae species, the dogwood family, are common in most continents and used primarily as ornamental crops, though some are used for food as well. In the present study, tocochromanol-tocopherol (T) and tocotrienol (T3)-contents were analyzed in the seeds of twenty-four Cornus species belonging to six Cornus subgenera. Given the substantial number of samples included in this study, we applied a fast extraction protocol using an ethanol and ultrasound treatment and systematically compared its performance with that of a conventional alkaline saponification method. Benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs) consist of more than 2500 diverse structures largely restricted to the order Ranunculales and the eumagnoliids. However, BIAs also occur in the Rutaceae, Lauraceae, Cornaceae and Nelumbonaceae, and sporadically throughout the order Piperales. Several of these alkaloids function in the defense of plants against herbivores and pathogens - thus, the capacity for BIA biosynthesis is expected to play an important role in the reproductive fitness of certain plants. Biochemical and molecular phylogenetic approaches were used to investigate the evolution of BIA bios

The dried fruits of Cornus officinalis (Cornaceae) are used in Kampo medicine (e.g. Hachimigan and Goshajinkigan) to treat senile osteoporosis, diabetes, gastric atony, frequent urination, and diarrhea/constipation associated with aging. The present study investigated the effects of a C. officinalis fruit extract and morroniside, an iridoid compound from isolated these fruits, on the reduction in gastric emptying small intestinal motility caused by 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and 1-(3-chlorophenyl) biguanide (5-HT3 receptor agonist), and gastric ulcers induced by 150 or 75 mM HCl/90 % EtOH (HCl

INTRODUCTION: Morroniside (Mor) is a bioactive compound found in Corni Fructus (CF) [Cornaceae; Cornus officinalis Siebold & Zucc.], which has been used as medicine and food in China, Korea, and Japan for over 2,000 years. This review summarizes recent progress on Mor, specifically focusing on its distribution, isolation, detection, and various pharmacological effects.
METHODS: A literature survey on Mor was conducted using electronic databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, CNKI, and Google Scholar. After removing TCM prescription-related standards, medicinal herb processing-related research

Less-common fruits from Cornus spp. (Cornaceae), also named dogwoods, have shown antidiabetic, antibacterial and anti-allergic properties and are thus considered a source of phytochemicals that are beneficial to human health. The study aimed to compare the chemical compositions of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of lyophilized fresh-picked and commercially available dried fruits of Cornus mas (Cm, cornelian cherry) and Cornus alba (Ca) fruits using HPLC-DAD-MS/MS method. Simultaneously, the α-amylase and pancreatic lipase (PL) inhibitory activities of the prepared extracts were compared by

Background Lipid profile disturbances are important risk factors for cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes mellitus and finding safe and multifaceted agents is persuaded in this regard. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of cornelian cherry dried powder (CCDP) on serum lipid profile as well as liver antioxidant capacity, HMG-CoA reductase level and activity, and LDL receptor level in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Methods Forty-eight male adult Wistar rats were randomly allocated into eight equal groups and were treated for 4 weeks as follows: negative control (normal rat

In the range of doses of 250-500 mg/kg (given i.p.) the aqueous extract of Loasa speciosa leaves showed an inhibitory effect on leukocyte migration, and a reduction on the pleural exudate, as well as dose-dependent anti-inflammatory and peripheral antinociceptive activities.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc., belonging to the family Cornaceae, has a history of nearly two thousand years of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has also been widely applied in traditional medicine across East Asia. Its earliest record can be traced back to the Shennong Ben Cao Jing. In the theory of TCM, C. officinalis is characterized by its sour, astringent, and warming properties and has long been used to treat conditions such as dizziness and tinnitus, as well as conditions affecting the lumbar and knee regions, impotence, spermatorrhea, an

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The ethnobotanical studies conducted in Turkey and other countries have revealed that Cornus mas L., from the family Cornaceae have been used against stomachache, diarrhea and colitis.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The objective the present study is to determine the possible activity of C. mas in experimentally induced ulcerative colitis in rats and to identify its phytochemical feature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 2,4,6-Trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-induced colitis model was induced in rats. The rats were orally treated with different doses (50, 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg) of C.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cornus officinalis (Cornaceae), known in Chinese as "Shanzhuyu," is a frequently used traditional Chinese medicine. It tastes sour and is astringent and slightly warm in nature. Its fruits have long been used to treat kidney deficiency, high blood pressure, waist and knee pain, dizziness, tinnitus, impotence, spermatorrhea, menorrhagia, and other diseases in China. The main distribution areas are Shanxi and Gansu.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This review focused on the ethnopharmacological uses of the herb. We also focus on the phytochemical, pharmacological, and toxicolo

Iridoids, which have beneficial health properties, include a wide group of cyclopentane [c] pyran monoterpenoids present in plants and insects. The cleavage of the cyclopentane ring leads to secoiridoids. Mainly, secoiridoids have shown a variety of pharmacological effects including anti-diabetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, neuroprotective, anti-cancer, and anti-obesity, which increase the interest of studying these types of bioactive compounds in depth. Secoiridoids are thoroughly distributed in several families of plants such as Oleaceae, Valerianaceae, Gentianaceae a
