Canine coronavirus (CCoV), canine respiratory coronavirus (CRCoV), canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2), and canine norovirus (CNV) are important pathogens for canine viral gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases. Especially, co-infections with these viruses exacerbate the damages of diseases. In this study, four pairs of primers and probes were designed to specifically amplify the conserved regions of the CCoV M gene, CRCoV N gene, CAV-2 hexon gene, and CNV RdRp gene. After optimizing different reaction conditions, a quadruplex RT-qPCR was established for the detection of CCoV, CRCoV, CAV-2, an

This report presents 2 cases in which puppy fatalities were associated with canine coronavirus (CCV), but no evidence of concurrent canine parvovirus (CPV-2) disease was observed. Case 1 involved a 7-week-old, male short-haired Chihuahua, which had become lethargic 24 hours after purchase from a pet store. Within 72 hours, the puppy began to vomit, had diarrhea, and was admitted to the veterinary clinic, where it was placed on IV fluids. The parvovirus Cite test was negative. The puppy died within 12 hours of admission and was submitted for diagnostic workup. Gross pathology revealed an enteri

The results of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nested polymerase chain reaction (n-PCR) assays for the diagnosis of canine coronavirus (CCV) infection, and the comparison with other diagnostic techniques, such as electron microscopy (EM) and virus isolation using A-72 cell line are reported. The study was carried out on 71 faecal samples of pups with enteritis. Of 71 samples examined 14 were positive in PCR, whereas 30 samples resulted positive in the n-PCR assay. CCV was detected by EM examination in only four out of 45 samples, and by virus isolation in three out of 30 samples n-PCR posi

Canine coronavirus (CCoV), canine parvovirus (CPV), and canine distemper virus (CDV) are highly contagious canine pathogens; dogs with these diseases are difficult to treat. In a previous study, we developed a recombinant adenovirus expressing canine interferon lambda 3 (Ad-caIFNλ3) in canine epithelial cells. In this study, we aimed to investigate the antiviral activity of Ad-caIFNλ3 against CCoV, CPV, and CDV in two canine cell lines, A72 and MDCK. Ad-caIFNλ3 transduction suppressed replication of these viruses without cytotoxicity. Our results suggest that Ad-caIFNλ3 may be a therapeutic ca

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) has antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Emerging evidence shows that HO-1 also exhibits antiviral activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus, and Ebola virus. Its antiviral effects are mediated not only by its enzymatic function but also through the modulation of interferon-related pathways, thereby inhibiting viral replication. In this study, we investigated the antiviral effects of HO-1 on canine coronavirus (CCoV) and canine influenza virus (CIV) H3N2 using cell-based as

In 2009 and again in 2019, public health warnings were confirmed by the emergence, rapid widespread transmission, and lethality of novel influenza and coronaviruses. The world continues to suffer disease from these respiratory viruses. Two newly recognized emergent respiratory viruses, influenza D and canine coronavirus HuPn-2018, have been shown to have considerable potential for causing future human epidemics, but diagnostics and surveillance for the viruses are lacking. We reviewed data regarding influenza D virus and coronavirus canine coronavirus HuPn-2018. Those data strongly indicate th

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical progression of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) associated with canine respiratory coronavirus and suspected aspiration in a previously healthy young dog.
CASE SUMMARY: A 1.5-year-old neutered male Rottweiler was presented for acute respiratory distress. The dog had a productive cough 2 weeks prior that was reported to have improved. While at a boarding facility, the dog developed decreased appetite and lethargy, regurgitated, and became acutely dyspneic. The dog was taken to the veterinarian on site, where thoracic radiographs revealed severe con

Canine respiratory coronavirus (CRCoV) has been identified as a causative agent of canine infectious respiratory disease, an upper respiratory infection affecting dogs. The epidemiology is currently opaque, with an unclear understanding of global prevalence, pathology, and genetic characteristics. In this study, Swedish privately-owned dogs with characteristic signs of canine infectious respiratory disease (n = 88) were screened for CRCoV and 13 positive samples (14.7%, 8.4-23.7% [95% confidence interval (CI)]) were further sequenced. Sequenced Swedish CRCoV isolates were highly similar despit

Pimarane diterpenes represent a notable class of metabolites. Secondary metabolites sphaeropsidin A (SphA) and sphaeropsidin B (SphB), produced by phytopathogenic fungi, have been recently reported for their potential efficacy against bovine coronavirus (BCoV). Hence, for discovering natural antivirals to serve as alternatives to conventional drugs, in this study the efficacy of SphA and SphB during infection with canine coronavirus (CCoV-II) in A72 cell line was examined. Our results demonstrated that a significant reduction in virus yield and in gene and protein expression of viral nucleocap

Canine coronavirus (CCoV) is a significant enteric pathogen in dogs, particularly in group-housed conditions. Although it is classically associated with mild enteritis, its high mutation rate drives genetic diversification, influencing virulence and reducing the effectiveness of traditional vaccines. To address this challenge, a novel CCoV strain, WH2023, was isolated from a breeding facility in Wuhan, Central China. Phylogenetic analysis of the spike (S) gene suggested that WH2023 is the predominant CCoV-IIa subtype. Pathogenicity studies in puppies revealed high virulence, with 100 % morbidi

Canine respiratory coronavirus (CRCoV) has been detected recently in dogs with canine infectious respiratory disease and is involved in the clinical disease complex. CRCoV is a group 2 coronavirus most closely related to bovine coronavirus and human coronavirus OC43. A real-time PCR assay was developed for the detection of CRCoV. The assay was validated against cell culture grown virus and shown to have a high level of sensitivity. A range of tissue samples were collected from dogs at a re-homing centre with a history of endemic respiratory disease. The samples were tested using a conventional

In many countries, vaccination programs still require dogs to be vaccinated against rabies in addition to Canine distemper virus (CDV), adenovirus (CAV), parvovirus (CPV), parainfluenza virus (CPiV), Leptospira (L) or Canine coronavirus (CCV= Cv). Few vaccines containing all these antigens are commercially available and, unless compatibility between the vaccines was demonstrated, concurrent administration of a DAPPi-L(Cv) vaccine and a vaccine against rabies should not be recommended. This may be of concern for practitioners who wish to vaccinate dogs with all components on the same day. This

The global outbreak of the novel coronavirus has renewed interest in related viral pathogens, including canine coronavirus (CCoV), which causes severe gastroenteritis, diarrhea, and vomiting in dogs worldwide. While cases of CCoV have been reported in China, specific instances in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region-a major center for dog breeding and consumption-have not been documented. In this study, we collected spleen tissue samples from dogs in Yulin city and conducted meta-transcriptomic sequencing. Bioinformatics analysis confirmed CCoV presence in these samples. Furthermore, virus scr

A nucleotide variability in the sequence of the gene encoding for the transmembrane protein M of canine coronavirus (CCV) is described. A total of 177 faecal samples from pups with enteritis were analysed by a PCR and n-PCR specific for CCV. Four samples, collected from a dog presenting a long-duration shedding of CCV, and a sample from another diarrhoeic dog, were found positive by PCR but negative by n-PCR. Sequence analysis of the samples revealed silent nucleotide substitutions in the binding site of the internal primer used for the n-PCR. Moreover, the nucleotide substitutions occurring o

BACKGROUND: Canine enteric coronavirus (CECoV) causes diarrhea and vomiting, often leading to outbreaks in kennels and shelters. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association does not recommend vaccination due to limited evidence of efficacy. This meta-analysis assesses CECoV vaccine immunogenicity and protective efficacy against diarrhea and viral shedding.
METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched for experimental or observational studies of dogs vaccinated against CECoV, published from inception to September 29, 2025. Included studies confirmed dogs were free of CECoV infec

Canine coronavirus (CCoV) is an important enteric alphacoronavirus primarily affecting canids. Here, we detected canine coronavirus RNA in a captive 9-year-old Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) in China. The complete viral genome was obtained using metagenomic next-generation sequencing. Phylogenetic and recombination analyses were then performed to investigate its evolutionary relationship with canine and feline coronaviruses. The identified CCoV strain clustered within established canine coronavirus lineages and showed sequence evidence of recombination involving coronavirus strains previ

Three outbreaks of fatal diarrhoea occurred in bush dog (Speothos venaticus) groups at two zoological collections in the United Kingdom between 2009 and 2017. In all cases, the predominant clinical signs were diarrhoea, anorexia and severe loss of condition. Despite supportive treatment, a number of fatalities occurred during each outbreak. Common gross post mortem findings were emaciation, with erythema, mucosal haemorrhage, and ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract. Histopathological features included villus blunting and fusion, crypt epithelial loss and lymphoid depletion, supporting a v
