[Dermatological video consultations for German prisons : Experiences from teledermatological consultations 2020 to 2022].

BACKGROUND: With increasing shortage of medical personnel also in the medical care in German correctional facilities, telemedicine has been used since 2016, initially in projects and then for regular medical care. Since 2019, there is the possibility of dermatological expertise in regular video consultations. OBJECTIVE: The benefits of an interdisciplinary online consultation with video and store and forward technology for dermatological issues are highlighted in terms of efficiency and feasibility. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A descriptive analysis of 450 dermatological video consultations for Ge

HIV infection among incarcerated women: epidemic behind bars.

Approximately 1 in 109 adult women was under the care, custody, or control of adult criminal justice authorities on any given day in 1998, the year for which the most recent statistics on women in correctional institutions are available. Of the 84,400 women who were in prison in 1998, a large percentage--37% in state facilities and 72% in federal prisons--were charged with drug-related offenses. Besides drug use, an additional determinant of HIV infection among incarcerated women may be prior exposure to physical and sexual abuse. Linkages among histories of childhood sexual abuse, physical ab

Cost Analysis of Buprenorphine Extended-Release Injection Versus Sublingual Buprenorphine/Naloxone Tablets in a Correctional Setting.

Incarcerated clients experience high rates of opioid use disorder and overdose. It is critical that opioid agonist treatment (OAT) is provided in correctional facilities. However, few receive OAT due to concerns about diversion, misuse, and safety. Buprenorphine extended-release (BUP-XR), a monthly buprenorphine depot injection, could be especially advantageous in the correctional setting as it can prevent diversion and misuse, saving staff resources and time. An injection of BUP-XR is costly compared with a monthly supply of buprenorphine/naloxone (BUP/NX) tablets. We demonstrate that when fa

[Medical care in prisons-legal framework, structure, and the role of the prison physician].

The medical care of prisoners in the German correctional system has traditionally taken place within a parallel structure, characterized by specific actors, regulations, and conditions. In light of the serious challenges in recruiting medical personnel for correctional facilities, cooperation with the public health system is becoming increasingly important. This is evident, for example, in the growing reliance on private (specialist) physicians and in the establishment of specially secured hospital rooms for the inpatient treatment of prisoners in public hospitals.International frameworks such

Infectious complications of tattoos.

Tattooing carries several medical risks, including the transmission of infectious diseases. We review the published literature on the transmission of hepatitis B virus, human immunodeficiency virus, Treponema pallidum, papillomavirus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and other organisms by tattooing. Education, through public health measures, should promote the prevention of infectious disease transmission. Particular populations who could benefit from education include prisoners, individuals involved with correctional facilities, youths, military personnel, and health care providers coming in cont

Infectious disease surveillance in U.S. jails: Findings from a national survey.

While infectious diseases (ID) are a well-documented public health issue in carceral settings, research on ID screening and treatment in jails is lacking. A survey was sent to 1,126 jails in the United States to identify the prevalence of health screenings at intake and characteristics of care for ID; 371 surveys were completed correctly and analyzed. Despite conflicting Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidance, only seven percent of surveyed jails test individuals for HIV at admission. In 46% of jails, non-healthcare personnel perform ID screenings. Jails in less urban areas were more likel

Managed access technology to combat contraband cell phones in prison: Findings from a process evaluation.

Cell phones in correctional facilities have emerged as one of the most pervasive forms of modern contraband. This issue has been identified as a top priority for many correctional administrators in the United States. Managed access, a technology that utilizes cellular signals to capture transmissions from contraband phones, has received notable attention as a promising tool to combat this problem. However, this technology has received little evaluative attention. The present study offers a foundational process evaluation and draws upon output measures and stakeholder interviews to identify sal

Sexual and physical safety: perceptions of incarcerated women.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to collect, track and analyze data from the inmates perspective to ensure that sexual abuse and harassment was being adequately prevented, detected and responded to appropriately and within a reasonable time frame. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Using the Prison Rape Elimination Act Survey Instrument, inmates were selected using a convenience sampling method to complete the survey. Once an inmate completed the survey during the year, she was taken off the polling roster not to be surveyed again within that year. FINDINGS: The perceptions of the female inm

"One of Us": Reframed Labels, Compassion and Hope in Voluntary Prison Work With Ex-Servicemen.

Despite the growing body of literature on Prison Officers and therapeutic practitioners within correctional facilities, comparatively little research exists into prison volunteers. Using semi-structured interviews with caseworkers (n = 5), analyzed via Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, this study explores the experience of being a Prison In-Reach Caseworker, supporting the male ex-Armed Forces population in Greater London prisons. Through identifying three superordinate themes of the inherent moral values of the shared past, compassion and "in" versus "out" of the prison system, the st

Wasping in Michigan Correctional Facilities: Exposures to Correctional Workers and Incarcerated Persons, 2023 and 2025: Case Reports.

"Wasping" is an emerging trend where pyrethroid-based insecticides are intentionally inhaled. Michigan's pesticide surveillance program identified events in Michigan wherein correctional officers and incarcerated persons required medical evaluation at local hospitals after "wasping" exposures. Michigan's pesticide surveillance program reviewed case reports involving acute pesticide exposures. Demographic characteristics, signs and symptoms, and clinical outcomes were evaluated and described for each exposed correctional officer and incarcerated person. Reports identified 11 separate events at

Telemedicine implementation in Austrian correctional facilities: a qualitative interview study with prison staff.

OBJECTIVE: Austrian correctional facilities face persistent shortages of on-site physicians challenging the principle of equivalence of care. Consequently, the Ministry of Justice launched a telemedicine (TM) pilot to support primary care in correctional facilities without round-the-clock medical cover. The goal of this study was to evaluate TM alongside its implementation in order to investigate key stakeholders' experiences with TM and its integration into routine medical practice and to assess if and how health technologies such as TM can be used to improve quality of care in underserved fa

Reconstructing infectious disease prevention mechanisms in carceral settings in transitional states: lessons from the Chinese experience.

AIMS: This study aims to examine how infectious disease prevention mechanisms are constructed and operationalized within carceral settings in transitional states, using China as a representative case. It focuses on the discursive and structural strategies employed by stakeholders to navigate institutional challenges in epidemic control and to delineate responsibilities across health and justice sectors, while also considering the ethical implications of these strategies and upholding the dignity and rights of individuals affected. METHODS: Guided by the epidemiological triangle model, the stu

It's a Dangerous Job! A Systematic Review of the Predictors of Correctional Officer Victimization by Incarcerated Individuals in U.S. Prisons and Jails.

Supervising people behind bars is inherently dangerous work, yet there is limited understanding of the risk and protective factors for correctional officer victimization. This study provides a systematic review of the predictors of violence perpetrated against U.S. prison and jail staff by incarcerated people. We identified 21 studies by searching six major academic databases (Criminal Justice Abstracts, Google Scholar, PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science). Most studies investigated staff assaults in state prisons with male populations, while fewer studies focused on staff in jails, female pr

Attempting the Impossible: Keeping a Jail COVID-Free.

AbstractPrior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States housed 2.3 million inmates in 7,147 incarceration structures that, because of age, overcrowding, and poor ventilation, exacerbated the spread of airborne infections. The flow of individuals into and out of correctional facilities compounded the challenges in keeping them COVID-free. This article focuses on the work of the health and administrative leadership, in partnership with judicial and police personnel, to prevent COVID-19 inside the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail and to mitigate its spread when the jail population and/or

The Mentally Ill in Jail: Contemporary Clinical and Practice Perspectives for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing.

Individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMI) who are incarcerated pose major treatment challenges for both correctional personnel and healthcare providers, yet deserve the same high standards of care as those in traditional mental health facilities. The literature references these challenges as types of mental health treatment disparities, and calls for improvement measures from clinicians, researchers, policy-makers, and advocates. From the standpoint of psychiatric-mental health (PMH) nursing, this paper explores, examines, and offers some contemporary clinical and practice perspectives f

Integrated Safety and Health Promotion among Correctional Workers and People Incarcerated: A Scoping Review.

Improving safety and health for correctional workers and people who are incarcerated are widespread yet separate initiatives. Correctional workers and people who are incarcerated experience similar challenges involved with poor workplaces and living conditions, including mental health crises, violence, stress, and chronic health issues, and the available resources lack integration with respect to safety and health promotion. This scoping review sought to contribute to an integrated approach for correctional system safety and health resources and identify studies of correctional resources that

The Implications of Stress Among Correctional Officers: A Summary of the Risks and Promising Intervention Strategies.

This paper provides a detailed summary and discussion of the concept of stress and how it relates to the health, wellbeing, and performance of corrections officers. In line with these objectives, we focus on three areas: (1) providing a more detailed definition of the concept of stress; (2) a discussion of the ways that increased exposure to stress may impact corrections officers' physical and mental health; and (3) a summary of prevention and intervention strategies that are relevant for corrections officers and have shown promise in dampening the consequences of increased stress exposure. Prison Misconduct and the Use of Alternative Resolutions by Correctional Officers in Therapeutic Communities and Other Custody Units.

This mixed methods study uses official records and interviews with inmates and staff to compare misconduct in therapeutic communities (TC's) and the use of alternative resolutions (in lieu of formal charges by correctional officers) to other prison units. Prisoner misconduct has been studied using individual self-reports or aggregate prison rates, but unit level differences between TC's and other prison wings are often overlooked. Restorative justice and diversion approaches are much studied in the community corrections literature but correctional officer use of alternatives to charging, such
